        레이철 카슨의 <침묵의 봄>의 수사 비평

        Rachel Carson's Silent Spring is recognized as a classic of environmental history and an example of popular scientific writing. This paper analyzes the rhetoric of the book by the methods of the canons of the classical rhetoric, the technical proofs of Aristotle, Bitzer's rhetorical situation and the method of metaphorical analysis to see why the book was so successful. According to the analysis, the book suggests the harmfulness of pesticides and massive aviation controls by them, which was not noted at the time, on the basis of concrete scientific evidence in various aspects. In particular, it shows that it is possible to increase persuasion by effectively recognizing that it was the situation to take action as well as arousing readers' emotions by using metaphors and fluent literary expressions. It is prominent that employing throughout the book conceptual metaphors [Mankind is at war with nature] and [Mankind is traveling] is urging people to change attitudes and make prudent decisions. Thus this book, is a material appropriate for the teaching of rhetoric as a successful example of the popularization of science by taking attention to its characteristics. 레이철 카슨의 『침묵의 봄』은 환경사의 고전이자 대중적 과학 저술의 모범으로 인정받는다. 이 논문은 이 책의 수사학을 고전 수사학의 규범들, 아리스토텔레스의 기술적 논거들, 비처의 수사학적 상황, 은유 분석의 방법으로 분석하여 왜 이 책이 그렇게 성공적일 수 있었는가를 살핀다. 분석 결과, 이 책은 당시까지 주목 받지 않은 살충제와 그것의 항공 방제의 유해성을 다각적 측면에서 구체적인 과학적 근거를 바탕으로 잘 제시하였다. 특히 은유를 비롯한 유려한 문학적 표현을 활용하여 독자의 감정을 움직이고 행동에 나서는 것이 마땅한 상황임을 효과적으로 인식시켜 설득력을 높일 수 있었음이 드러난다. [인류는 자연과 전쟁 중이다]와 [인류는 여행 중이다]라는 개념적 은유들 책 전체에서 채용하여 사람들의 태도 전환과 신중한 선택의 결단을 촉구함이 두드러진다. 그러므로 이 책은 과학 대중화의 성공적 사례로서 그 특성들에 주목함으로써 수사학을 가르치기 위한 적절한 모범적 자료이다.

        The One Year Outcome after KTP Laser Vaporization of the Prostate According to the Calculated Vaporized Volume

        The aim of this study was to develop a new simple method for measuring the vaporized volume and to evaluate the outcome of high-power potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) photoselective laser vaporization. A total of 65 patients, with a mean age of 67.7 yr (range 53 to 85), were included in the primary analysis. The vaporized volume was calculated as the pre-operative volume minus the immediate postoperative volume plus the volume of the defect. For all patients, the subjective and objective parameters improved significantly after surgery. Six and 12 months after surgery, the group with a smaller vaporized volume (<15 g) had a lower reduction of the mean International Prostate Symptom Score (P=0.006 and P=0.004) and quality of life index (P=0.006 and P=0.004) when compared to the group with a greater vaporized volume (≥15 g). There were no differences in the change of the maximum flow rate and post-void residual based on the vaporized volume. Our findings suggest that the subjective improvement, after a high-power KTP laser vaporization, may be dependent on the vaporized volume obtained after the procedure.

        19세기 음향학과 음악의 교감

        19세기를 거치면서 음향학은 실험과 수학을 바탕으로 물리학의 한 분야로 정립되고 있었다. 이러한 과정에서 음악과 음향학은 긴밀한 교감을 갖고 발전했다. 다양한 악기가 음향학에서 우선적으로 사용하는 실험용 음원이 되었고 악기 제작자들도 악기의 개량과 개발을 위해 악음에 대한 과학적 탐구활동을 전개하였다. 정률과 절대 음높이에 대한 음악계의 요구가 컸던 시기에 음향학자들은 이것들을 위한 이론적 및 정량적 기초를 제공하는 중요한 역할을 담당했다. 두 분야의 긴밀한 교감 속에서 '음악 과학은 음악도들에게 필수적인 과목으로 간주되었던 것이다. During the nineteenth century, acoustics was established as a subfield of physics on the basis of experiment and mathematics. In this course, music and acoustics developed in close interaction between each other. Various musical instruments became primary sound sources in acoustical experiments and musical-instrument makers undertook scientific investigations for improving and creating instruments. Responding to the needs of the music world for reasonable temperaments and absolute pitches, acousticians played an important role of providing them with the theoretical and quantitative foundations. It was through sympathy between the two fields that 'musical science' was regarded as an imperative subject for musical students.

        The Effects of the SNS Activities of Politicians on Political Efficacy and the Intention to Participate in Voting

        Political activities through social networking service (SNS) are common in the political communication environment. The main aim of this study is to present logical and empirical evidence on the effects of politicians’ SNS activities. To achieve this goal, this research analyzed the relationship between the SNS activities of politicians and the political efficacy and political participation of citizens through a survey of 644 people. The results of the survey analysis showed that politicians’ SNS activities have a positive effect on both the internal and external efficacies of citizens and that these efficacies positively influence political participation. This finding means that the SNS activities of politicians promote political participation by increasing the political efficacy of citizens and states. The results also suggest that SNS, with its characteristics of communication and interaction, plays a crucial role as a political communication medium. Therefore, with SNS, a variety of information sources on politics can be offered, suggestions from citizens can be embraced, and such suggestions can be revealed to politicians as a means of promoting political efficacy and participation.

        Significance of Predicted Tumor Volume as a Predictor of Pathologic Stage in Patients Undergoing Radical Prostatectomy

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether predicted tumor volume could predict pathologic stage in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. Materials and Methods: The clinical and pathologic data of 236 patients who underwent a 12-core needle biopsy followed by radical prostatectomy were obtained from our database and reviewed retrospectively. Results: Observed tumor volume correlated best with serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level (r=0.677, p<0.001) and the number of positive biopsy cores (r=0.489, p<0.001). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop a model for predicting tumor volume before radical prostatectomy. All explanatory variables except PSA and the number of positive biopsy cores were eliminated, yielding the equation ([predicted tumor volume]=0.381x[PSA]+0.921x[No. of positive biopsy cores]−0.992). Tumor volume predicted by this equation correlated strongly with observed tumor volume (r=0.722, p<0.001). This was also true when a different cohort of 159 patients was analyzed (r=0.638, p<0.001). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of predicted tumor volume were 68.5% for extracapsular extension, 75.7% for seminal vesicle invasion, and 70.4% for positive surgical margin. Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that predicted tumor volume correlated significantly with biochemical recurrence-free survival (p<0.001; log-rank test). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that tumor volume predicted on the basis of PSA levels and number of positive biopsy cores may predict pathologic stage with reasonable accuracy.
