        그림을 활용한 복합양식 텍스트가 한국 초등영어 학습자의 우연적 어휘 습득에 미치는 영향

        This study examined the role of multimodal texts and pair work in incidental vocabulary learning among Korean elementary school students. The current study investigated: 1) to what extent multimodal texts including pictures help develop L2 learners’ receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge and 2) whether pair work while L2 learners read a multimodal text promotes incidental vocabulary learning. Each class was randomly assigned to one of the three experimental groups (i.e., the multimodal text + pair work, multimodal text + solo work, and unimodal text + solo work groups) or the control group. The results showed that reading multimodal texts with a pair was helpful in improving Korean elementary school learners’ receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge. Further, multimodal text with pictures not only helped learners visually understand the entire content and context of the story, but also greatly reduced the learners’ fear of reading an English text without an accompanying Korean translation. These findings suggest that in order to promote incidental vocabulary acquisition in young English learners, it may be important to teach reading using multimodal texts and pair work activities.
