Vol.14 No.2

This paper aims at analyzing Henry Park's subjective agency crossing transnationalism on an educational view in Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker. Which describes how Henry as Korean American reacts to the notion of his ethnicity, being encountered in nation-state and tradition in transnational era. Henry undergoes the deep handicap of English pronunciation symbolizing a crisis of the invisible non-beings as an outsider within the dominant white society. However, he overcomes his invisible Otherness through the subjective agency, solving English barriers. In his attempt to create his creative subjectivity, Henry decides to help multi-ethnic children with English difficulties. Embracing all the native and the non-native speakers, he comes to understand a sense of ‘us,’ and becomes a subjective being which represents a productive vision as a diasporic citizenship in transnationalism. Also, this study focuses on Henry's realization of a subjective human-being who begins with the creative non-teleological notion between self and society, based on content-based instruction, community language learning, and whole language approach. Teachers can use reading method and simulation game to understand Henry's subjective agency.

Vol.19 No.1

This paper aims at analyzing an inextricable relationship both with the land of Nebraska and with Antonia`s bodily self, which are invariably manifested in her passionate life of the land. Tending eleven sons and an orchard connected with a productive home and the fertile farmland, Antonia is dissolved into something complete and great in the land of Nebraska. That makes us feel the goodness of planting and tending and harvesting, all the strong things of her true heart coming out in her bodily experiences. But Antonia can be seen as the ordinary woman of the land rather than be cast both as the Mother of Earth and as the ecofeministic heroine. Antonia is not a spiritually symbolic character of being in search of the coexistence between nature and women as well as groping toward the notion of equality among them. On the other hand, Antonia represents a bodily experiential human beings of closely binding up with nature in special places and conditions. This reflects precisely the basic world-view that her body is an object that houses something holy. This view provides a new model for questioning the ecofeminie ideology, the Mother of Earth, the patriarchal social ideology, and the deep ecology.

Vol.13 No.2

This paper aims at studying a desirable teaching model for enlightening ecological perception based on literary ecology. This teaching methodology promotes the organic relationships among all the members of the human community by ecologically sensitive literatures. Literary ecology results in mediating complex interactions between humans and their living places, which offer an opportunity to recognize the emergent voices of nature with deep sensitivity. This model is related with the process of analyzing Willa Cather's novel Opioneersl, based on Content-based Instruction, Community Language Learning, and Whole Language Approach. Teachers can use Reading Method, Suggestopedia, and Simulation Game to understand Alexandra's ecological perception based on Genius of the Divide. This approach regards language as a vehicle for learning content, a means of making meaning, and persons in contact. The process can be maximized by some combination of place-connectedness and reflexible resiliency to modulate personal and communal senses of places such as the Nebraska and the Divide. Accordingly this suggests meaningful ways to call for both the ecological consciousness and the English learning in literary ecology.

Vol.18 No.2

This paper aims at analyzing the loss and recovery of equilibrium based on the life rhythm shared by all the living things. Cather seeks to treat with the ecological cycle by overcoming or removing obstacles, by slight variations, or by opportunistic adaptations. Cather believes that maintaining the pattern of the ecological cycle is the most elementary instinctual purpose of life, as an organism seeks to regain equilibrium in order to maintain that biological pattern. For her exploration of the pattern about this ecological cycle, Cather tries two experiments in content and form. One involved inserting Peter`s experiential world into Tom Outland`s natural world, the second connected Tom Outland`s natural world to the Blue Mesa with the historical traces of Pueblo Indians. Further inquiry into the treatment of the embodied places in Tom`s and Peter`s relationships between the Cliff City and the two houses indicates something of the place-centered imagination, recognizing how biology and culture interact. She avoids the one-dimensional approach that reads culture and nature according to the current reigning ideological stance, by her version on Tom`s research of Cliff Dwellers, and Peter`s experiences of two houses. Her ecological cycle reflects the new ecological thinking that is now developing in response to the interconnections between the human culture and the natural world, or between the human and the nonhuman.

Vol.56 No.3

This paper aims at tracing Thea`s upward trajectory with her participation in the cultural business of constructing a higher life for Chicago through the metaphor of "the cliff dwellers." Conveying the dangers of the cultural business for art commodification, Cather researches for something for which contains the intrinsic values of arts. Ultimately cultural uplift of business men in Chicago can threaten an artist`s spirit and in turn predicate extinction for the artist. But the natural presence of Panther Canyon and the Indian ruins it contains helps Thea reconstitute and reinvigorate herself. Pander Canyon can function as a regenerative, imaginative place to recuperate and escape from the complexity of the modern civilization. Thea` use of the Native ruins for both self-discovery and self-healing allows her to take her place as in individual in modern America. Cather criticizes the contemporary belief that arts and artists are commodities to be bought, sold, and traded. (Daejin University).

Vol.21 No.1

This paper aims at describing the process on formation of the various meaning's discourse in a Afro-American community by performing narratives. Even though Morrison's novels appear to stand as divided self of binary oppositions, her characters exist as a complex configuration of their own conditiorn in a multiplicity of other factora and traits. In Jazz, Morrison moves from first-person narrator to third-person narrator by metafictional techniques, and combines the pieces and fragments of characters' memories. Although narrators are limited to her haughtiness and privileges at the beginning of the novel, they recover the generous reciprocity with other characters. Morrison try to deconstruct the fixed binary identity after tal<ing the forms of breaching conventional boundaries between narrators and characters, and between narrators and readers.

Vol.6 No.-

This dissertation begins the recognition that Thomas Pychon's novels are filled with problematic consciousness on today's history. His fictional worlds are pluralistic-governed not by rigid, absolute, and universal ideas of order but by multiple, partial, overlapping, and often conflicting ideas of order. And these worlds are familiar, even when they are most bizare and surreal, because they evoke a multilayered reality in which multiple means of putting things together manage to coexist without resolving into a single, definitive system of organization. Either extreme is a product of delusion as it is governed by an overjealous attempt at meaning and self-assertion. Pynchon depicts the extremes as ideological systems. He presents a parodic panorama of life in late-capitalism, in which individuals are at the mercy of delusive economic, political, corporate, and technological orders, The moral he wants to convey seems to be that the middle ground, the realm between 'one and zero', should be maintained. This is the zone of 'interface' and 'enclave, ' transcending binary choices which serve as tools of deterministic rationalization for control. Interface and enclave represent the real present of our life. It is the point where we can maintain a proper relation to the extreme situations which Force and Counterface.
