For high-speed trains, specifications for the interior noise have been used that were determined for ballasttracks. Since most new high-speed trains are operated on slab tracks, the interior sound level and the sound source transferpath contribution to the interior sound are studied for slab track lines. The increase of the inside sound pressure levelin a slab track tunnel is mainly caused by increased sound contributions from the upper sides and the roof while in freefield driving condition the sound inside the coach is mainly caused by structure-borne sound. Further studies are neededto define acceptable noise criteria for the inside of a high-speed train, especially in slab track tunnels. For this, humanannoyance, health effects with exposure time, and realistic noise reduction measures have to be considered.
