        Korean EFL Learners’ Pragmatic Strategy Use in Responding to Rudeness

        The present study investigates Korean EFL learners’ pragmatic strategy use in responding to rudeness. To investigate the difference between proficiency groups and gender difference, Discourse Completion Task (hereafter DCT) and statistical analysis were used. The Korean EFL data were gathered from Korean university students and the students were assigned to high and low proficiency group in accordance to their University’s English proficiency test. The result showed that learners of different proficiency levels had basically the same range of pragmatic strategies. However, the most frequently used strategy was different between lower and higher proficiency group. Higher proficiency group used ‘Insult’ the most while lower proficiency group used ‘Apologize’ the most. In terms of gender difference, male used ‘Insult’ the most while female used ‘Apologize’ the most. The current study also compared the data of EFL students’ with those of English native speaker’s. The biggest difference between English native speakers and EFL students in the usage of pragmatic strategies in responding to rudeness was that English natives used ‘Acquiesce’ and ‘Argue’ strategy. Lastly, some implications of the study are given in terms of the learning and acquisition of pragmatic strategies in EFL context.

        Near-complete optic nerve transection by high-pressure air

        The use of high-pressure air instruments has become more common. Consequently, there have been a number of cases of orbital emphysema caused by contact with high-pressure air. In this case, a 62-year-old male patient visited an emergency medical center after his left eye was shot by an air compressor gun that was used to wash cars. Lacerations were observed in the upper and lower eyelids of his left eye. Radiological examinations revealed orbital emphysema, optic nerve transection, pneumocephalus, and subcutaneous emphysema in the face, neck, shoulder, and mediastinum. Canalicular injury repair was performed, and the emphysema resolved. However, there was near-complete vision loss in the patient’s left eye. Because most optic nerve transections occur after a severe disruption in bone structure, pure optic nerve transections without any injury of the bone structure, as in the present case, is extremely rare.

        한국인 학자와 영어 원어민 학자의 논문 영문 초록 비교 분석

        Most if not all research articles published in journals require the author to write an abstract regardless of academic field. However, abstract writing in English is a highly specialized genre on its own. In this light, the purpose of this study is to investigate differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean and native English scholars. 90 research paper abstracts written in English by Korean national scholars, US-educated Korean scholars and native English scholars were compared according to rhetorical organization. A generalized rhetorical scheme was used in analysis which was based on Graetz (1985) and Swales (1990): Background-Purpose-Method-Result-Conclusion. In addition, the use of conjunctions as a cohesive device was analyzed based on the categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analyses of the research paper abstracts showed that the majority of the abstracts included the purpose, method and result components. However, while approximately 70 percent of native English writers used research background in the abstract, only 26 percent of Korean national scholars did so. Regarding the use of conjunctions, Korean-national scholars overused and inappropriately used additive and temporal conjunctions. The US-educated Korean scholars showed similar patterns to the native English speakers. The findings obtained here imply that there is a need to provide academic writing instruction of abstracts to non-native scholars.

        The Long-Term Effects of L2 Pragmatic Instruction on Writing Emails to Faculty: Focusing on the Forms of Address

        This study explored long-term effect of explicit instruction on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ pragmatic competence when writing emails in English to examine Korean university students’ usage of forms of address when writing emails to faculty. The data comprised of 94 English emails written by 32 Korean university students in Korea. Over two weeks, Korean EFL students received four hours of instructions on how to write an appropriate email to faculty members. Data were collected quantitively and qualitatively through email writing assignments in pretest, immediate posttest, and delayed posttest. A follow-up interview was administered. A descriptive analysis of usage frequency of address forms was conducted to examine changes between before and after instruction. Results indicated that Korean EFL students obtained pragmatic competence focusing on forms of address. Regarding retention effect, findings showed that pragmatic competence was retained over an extended period (i.e., 10 months). In addition, through interview, it was found that participants showed enhanced awareness of forms of address along with norms of target culture through the instruction. Further implications of this study are given in terms of instruction on email pragmatics in the EFL environment, particularly in academia.
