본 연구의 목적은 경영자의 능력이 기업의 정보비대칭 수준에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인임을 실증적으로 분석하고자 함이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 2000년부터 2014년까지 유가증권에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 경영자능력과 정보비대칭을 회귀분석하였다. 분석결과 경영자의 능력과 정보비 대칭은 통계적으로 유의한 음(-)의 관계가 나타났다. 이는 능력이 높은 경영자는 상대적으로 기업에 대한 정보를 많이 제공하여 정보비대칭이 감소한 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 추가적으로 대규모기 업집단 여부에 따라 경영자의 능력이 정보비대칭에 미치는 영향에 차이가 있는지를 확인하였다. 연구결과 대규모기업집단에서는 경영자의 능력과 정보비대칭은 관련성이 없는 것으로 나타났으며 대규모기업집단에 포함되지 않는 집단에서는 경영자의 능력이 높을수록 정보비대칭의 수준이 낮은 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 대규모기업집단에서는 경영자의 능력이 정보비대칭 수준에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 본 연구는 경영자능력과 정보비대칭간의 관계를 분석함으로써 궁극적으로 경영자능력이 자본비용에 미치는 영향을 설명할 수 있는 근거를 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 대규모기업집단과 정보비대칭의 관계를 분석한 선행연구를 확장하여 대규모기업집단 소속여부에 따른 경영자능력이 정보비대칭에 미치는 영향의 차이를 최초로 분석했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 경영자의 능력이 기업의 정보환경과 투자 및 재무환경에 중요한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 감안할 때 본 연구의 결과는 관련 연구에 중요한 기초자료로 활용될 것으로 판단한다. The purpose of this study is to investigate an effect of managerial ability on information asymmetry. We also examine how a relation between managerial ability and information asymmetry is affected by Korean business group. We measure managerial ability based on prior studies of Demerjian et al.(2012). Our result show that managerial ability are negatively related to information asymmetry. High managerial ability is significantly associated with lower information asymmetry. We also find that firms with Korean business group have not any significant decrease in information asymmetry, while those with non-Korean business group show significantly negative association between managerial ability and information asymmetry. Our study is distinguished from prior studies because we empirically analyze the evidence that a relation between managerial ability and information asymmetry. In addition we find empirical evidence that a relation between managerial ability and information asymmetry is affected by Korean business group. Overall our study implicates the importance of managerial ability in terms of investment, financing, and information environment.
