■Abstract The Study of Relationship between Religion and National construction (Hwangdo-nakto) of Manchukuo 1. Ko, Byoung chul The purpose of this research is to investigate relationship between religion and national and ideological construction(Hwangdo-nakto) in Mancuokuo. Through the process of this research, I tried to find out how high-ranking government officials in Manchukuo utilized specific religions in process to create and to extend their national ideologies. To achieve these purposes, in chapter 2, in the title of ‘duet of spirits of the national foundation in Manchukuo’ I reviewed differences as well as similarities between Wangdo ideology and Hwangdo ideology which were national ideologies in Manchukuo. The one was relating to Confucianism, and the other was relating to Shintoism. Then I pointed out that two ideologies in Manchukuo was played as duet. In chapter 3, in the title of ‘Shintoism and Hwangdo-nakto ideology’, I reviewed process that high-ranking government officials in Manchukuo create Hwangdo-nakto ideology, relating to Shintoism. In chapter 4, in the title of ‘religion and Hwangdo-nakto ideology’, I reviewed other religions’ responses to practical application of Hwangdo-nakto ideology. Their responses were divided into two - cooperation and dissension. The recent researches about Manchukuo’ ideologies has bolstered the argue that Wangdo ideology relating to Confucianism was changed into Hwangdo ideology relating to Shintoism. In this writing, I also classified Manchukuo’ ideology into two. But I paid attention to gabs between two ideologies, and took up the position that Manchukuo played a duet, based on differences between Confucianism and Shintoism. And I pointed out how rituals are used in process of building up state, based on ritualizing strategies of Manchukuo.

The purpose of this article is to understand the world‒view of Ham Sok‒hon(咸錫憲) in 1960s‒1970s’ Korea through his Ssial concept. For this, I examined the religious journey that had stimulated Ham Sok‒hon’ imagination in 1960‒1970s, the religious planning of Ssial concept, and relevance between logics surrounding the Ssial concept and cosmopolitanism including criticism of nationalism. In the process, I had some claims as follows. First, Ham Sok‒hon’ multi‒layered world‒view can be described adequately as add‒version(加宗) concept(Chapter 2). Second, key words penetrating Ham Sok‒hon’ world‒view are suffering, meaning of suffering, and Ssial concept that was imagined as the results to connect the world‒views of various religions on the basis of Protestantism(Chapter 3). Third, Ham Sok‒hon, through the emphasis on the logic of the part‒whole and personality, affirmed a nation itself that was expressed as community of Ssial, and criticized the nationalism and individualism, orienting democracy and cosmopolitanism in 1960‒1970s(Chapter 4). Ham Sok‒hon imagined the universe category was larger than the cosmopolitan. In this sense, I claimed the world‒view of Ham Sok‒hon transcended cosmopolitanism, and Ssil concept that Ham Sok‒hon emphasized in 1960‒1970s goes beyond the cosmopolitan, extending his logic of the part‒whole.
Vol.35 No.-
Ever since gaining liberation in 1945, Korean society has constantly recalled memories of Japan’s invasion and Korea’s anti-Japanese movements for an independent state (AMIS). In the process, a small number of new religious groups were also identified as main subjects within AMIS. However, the logic necessary to connect these religious groups with AMIS was still weak. In order to solve this situation academically, the purpose of this article is to illuminate the activities of Mugeukdo (無極道) and Jo Jeongsan (趙鼎山) through the lens of AMIS and to reflect on the issues that will arise when linking the religion with AMIS. Regarding this purpose, this article analyzed the internal and external data collected by Daesoon Jinrihoe (大巡眞理會) about Jo Jeongsan and Mugeukdo’s activities linked to AMIS. Later, this paper presents several tasks for future research on this subject matter. Specifically, according to Chapter Ⅱ, the AMIS of Jo Jeongsan and Mugeukdo were generally centered on resistance at the family level, Jo Jeongsan’s order to participate in the March 1st Movement, and Mugeukdo’s industrial activities. In Chapter Ⅲ, I reviewed the contents of Chapter II using Daesoon Jinrihoe’s external materials. According to the results of the review, future research is required to discover and cross-check materials related to the AMIS of Jo Jeongsan and Mugeukdo believers. Likewise, further research is needed to highlight the theory of the enthronement of emperor (天子登極說) and the Great Opening of the later world (後天開闢) in terms of AMIS. These efforts can make contributions that increase the credibility of Daesoon Jinrihoe’s internal data on the AMIS of Jo Jeongsan and Mugeukdo and expand the periphery of AMIS as it relates to certain religious groups. Subsequently, in Chapter Ⅳ, I present three items for reflecting upon the connection between certain religious groups and AMIS. The first is that criteria for establishing the category of AMIS is necessary to determine whether religious activities can be included. Second, reductionist approaches make it difficult to explain the reasons why some of the people who participated in AMIS did so while forming ‘new religious movements,’ and why these groups have maintained their religious identity even after liberation was achieved in 1945. Third, it is necessary to distinguish between the primary and the secondary dimensions to elaborate on the connection between these religions and AMIS. This means that researchers should be expected to look at whether the activities in question are based on a religious worldview and whether the goal of the activities is the realization of AMIS or the implementation of some aspect of that religious worldview. In the future, considering the mechanisms that make AMIS memorable in Korea, religious groups and religious studies should take greater interest in discovering and accumulating data that facilitates research on these topics. At the same time, effort should be made to find the basis for AMIS within religious worldviews. It can also be made possible through specific interest in further elaboration on the various AMIS-related activities of Jo Jeongsan and Mugeukdo.
A Comparative Perspective
Vol.1 No.1
The most silent structural and behavioral manifestations of the North Korean political system under Kim Jong Il include 1) the dominance of the supreme leader, 2) the apotheosis of Kim Il Sung and his legacy, 3) the ascendancy of the military, 4) the relative decline in the blending of the hard-line and pragmatism in external policy. This means that the Kim Jong Il system is only marginally different from its predecessor. The dominance of the supreme leader, the cult of personality, the dichotomy between reigning and ruling, the salience of ideology and the blending of the hard-line and pragmatism in external policy--all of these represent continuity, not change, between the Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il areas. Change can be discerned in thee areas only : the ascendancy of invoking the legacy of Kim Il Sung. When one turns from a diachronic to a cross-national comparison, one encounters a strikingly different situation. That is to say, the North Korean political system under Kim Jong Il shares but a few traits with other communist states. There seems to be only one characteristic that is common to all of the surviving communist states today--the supremacy of the communist party. Another characteristic, the dominance of the supreme leader, is duplicated, albeit to a markedly lesser degree than in the North, in only one other country, namely, Cuba.It is, then, the differences, not the commonalities or similarities, that stand out when one attempts to place the DPRK in a comparative context. The cult of personality practiced in the North is without parallel. Only the Stalin and Mao cults can be placed in the same league but neither of them was extended to family members, let alone ancestors. Dynastic succession in the North is unprecedented in the history of international communism. The dominance of the supreme leader is not really duplicated in other communist states if we use the degree of dominance prevailing in the North as a yardstick. The persistence of a hard-line and the continuing reliance on ideological indoctrination in the North's domestic areas is faintly echoed in China, Cuba, and Vietnam In external policy, too, all three communist countries display a greater degree of pragmatism than does North Korea. In Sum, the North Korean Political system under Kim Jong Il is sui generis, just as its predecessor was. At the risk of sounding trite, one may state that North Korea under Kim Jong Il resembles only one other political system-North Korea under Kim Il Sung.
