Vol.24 No.1

The purpose of this study is to investigate the in- and pre-service teachers’ perceptions of English Teaching Assistant system that was introduced to enhance teaching practice of and instructional consulting for student teachers at elementary schools. This study uses a survey questionnaire and teaching journals to examine both in- and pre-service elementary school teachers' perceptions. Survey data and teaching journals were collected from 20 elementary teachers and 37 pre-service elementary English teachers who participated in the English Teaching Assistant system for a semester. The research data presents that both in- and pre-service teachers think the program positively effects pre-service teachers’ acquisition of teaching methods and understanding of elementary English education, and elementary school students’ English level. The results also show both in- and preservice elementary school teachers answered positively to questions on the introduction of this system. Moreover, the findings indicate that more time for teaching practice and for pre-discussion between in- and pre-service teachers on their job would be preferred by both kinds of teachers. In-service teachers suggest that the program should be strengthened to give the participants some additional points towards their course evaluation at their university or to adopt the program as a required course of the curriculum.

Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of the elementary school English classes through an examination of the actual conditions of English instructional supervision. In order to determine what goes on in current English instructional supervision in the elementary schools, the study designed queries and interviewed teachers for the purpose of identifying the realities of English instructional supervision. Interview was conducted with 12 teachers. Survey data were randomly collected from 217 elementary teachers working at 23 elementary schools in Gyeongsang province. The results show the respondents answered negatively to questions on the revitalization of supervision activities, the ways of evaluating their English teaching in the classroom, and their frequency of using evaluation checklists in their supervision activities. They answered that consultation from peer teachers has been most effective for improving their instruction and peer supervision among the 5 most prevailing types of supervision was mostly preferred. Moreover, the findings indicated that supervision before teaching was mostly preferred. Based on the findings, the study insists that supervision activities should be effective when it can be revitalized by teachers themselves and online supports. It also suggests that offices of education and schools need to support teachers to organize consulting communities by themselves and develop some effective systems of peer supervision activities in each school. Finally, teachers need to be more acquainted with the criteria and components of evaluation checklists before teaching.

Vol.26 No.1

The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of preschool English education textbooks based on the elementary English curriculum. The study reviews the current issues of preschool English education and analyzes previous studies on preschool English education for the purpose of identifying the realities of preschool English textbooks as well as preschool English education in Korea. After reviewing eight preschool English textbooks, the study found many textbook series and their teacher's guidebooks do not contain detailed development criteria such as the number of vocabulary and the limit of sentence length according to different preschool pupil age categories in their developing textbooks. The study indicates many words, expressions, and dialogues included in the preschool textbooks are inappropriate for their levels. The study finally insists that preschool textbook developers should consider detailed criteria in closer connection with elementary school textbooks. Related government organizations as well as publishing companies should have the proper reviewing system for better preschool English education textbooks.

Vol.15 No.1

Since content-based immersion programs were first established in Korea in 1995, content-based and immersion models can now be found across the whole country. However, the effects of content-based models are still controversial. This study examines the effects of content-based programs which integrate art with English in a primary school for a duration of 8 months, and compares them with those of a normal program over the same period. The pre-and post- English proficiency tests and written art tests were conducted on 120 students in 4 different classes: 2 classes formed experimental groups and 2 formed the comparative groups. The study found that the content-based program was indeed beneficial to Korean EFL learners on all the skills, I.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Specially, the content-based program was beneficial to both low level students and high level students in writing. The content-based program was also more effective in attaining achievement in art in the experimental groups than the comparative groups. In addition, the survey result conducted on the experimental group showed that the effects of the content-based program positively influenced students' comprehension of the content of their English class. Pedagogical implications and directions for future research are also discussed.

Vol.23 No.1

The purpose of this study is to locate the character indices and to develop self-reported evaluation items of character appropriate for EFL teaching contexts confirming the validity and reliability of the developed scale. For the study, the Delphi method was employed with 88 experts to locate the character indices and to determine the order of importance and realization among them. The result showed that there are 12 basic character indices to be used in English teaching. The indices were selected considering Kendall s W-test, Borich, and the Locus for Focus. The evaluation scale was administered to 38 teachers three times and 725 Korean elementary school students for the study. The results were analyzed using two factor analyses: Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA). EFA of the 18 item scale demonstrated Cronbach s α=.96 for internal consistency of the total items. CFA supported a six-factor structure. Cross-Validation for the retest accepted six-factors. Those six factors were as follows; Gratitude and Etiquette as factor 1, Fairness as factor 2, Sharing and Consideration as factor 3, Sincerity as factor 4, Sense of Responsibility as factor 5, and Broad-mindedness as factor 6. The Model Fit Indexes such as Comparative Fit Index(CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index(TLI), and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation(RMSEA) proved that Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) is satisfactory. It is hoped that the aforementioned factors and test items developed in this study can be useful to evaluate character education in EFL teaching. The test items can be also one of the various and convenient evaluation tools which were explicitly suggested to use in the 2015 Revised English National Curriculum.

Vol.18 No.1

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of creativity and character education at the elementary level. This study uses pre and post self-evaluation sheets and pre and post tests to examine the effects of creativity and character education on elementary students. For the purposes of this study, teaching materials, including lesson plans, were developed to complement the current elementary school textbook and were then integrated into an elementary school curriculum for eight months. The questions on the self-evaluation sheet were designed to identify the students’ creativity and character based on learning activities done in English classes. The self-evaluation data and pre and posttest results were collected from 59 elementary school students in the experimental group and 61 elementary school students in the control group. The results indicate that creativity and character education can be meaningfully and successfully integrated into English classes at the elementary level. The research data shows that the creativity and character education has not positively affected students' general academic achievement and test scores of test items related to creativity. However, the results show the creativity and character education has positively affected students' confidence in terms of their creativity and character as well as their attitude towards English learning. The study also suggests that creativity and character should be included in evaluation criteria for school textbooks, teaching materials, and teaching practices.

Vol.22 No.1

In South Korea, many in- and pre-service teachers are being sent to foreign countries for training programs based on the recent decisions of local educational offices and universities of education to send its current teachers as well as student educators abroad to enhance their teaching abilities. The study firstly proves that a 4-week program abroad has a significantly positive effect on improving participating teachers’classroom English proficiency when it includes a course of classroom English despite the relatively short period of training abroad. The participating elementary teachers who were involved in 3 different models in the Philippines and in the U.S.A, were given survey questionnaires to uncover their perceptions on the programs experienced while training abroad. The surveyed teachers’ perceptions were found to be overall satisfactory. Furthermore, ‘peer activity’ was rated as the most effective component of the program because of the authentic experience and practical applications within the training program. While the Philippine programs had many positive reviews in developing intensive and varied program contents, there was also strong criticism of the program’s shortcomings based on the social-language learning barriers. The study also suggests possible ways of heightening the effectiveness of the 4-week training abroad programs for future applications.
