The volcanic ash soils from the Jeju province have low available phosphate because of the high phosphatefixing power of the soils. Phosphorus fertilizerwas dressed after cultivating green manure crops and beforecultivating potatoes in order to investigate potato yields, the available phosphate contents, and phosphorusbalance in the soils.Green manure crops cultivated in this study were hairy vetch alone and hairy vetch and rye. During potato cultivation, four treatments were conducted in the experiments; NF (non fertilizer), P fertilizer(N-P-K = 0-25-0 kg 10a-1), NK fertilizer (N-P-K = 18-0-19 kg 10a-1), and NPK fertilizer (N-P-K = 18-25-19 kg10a-1). There were no differences in the yields of potato stem and tuber from the cultivation plots of differentgreen manure crops. However, in the plots with single-sown hairy vetch and mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye,the yields of potato stem and tuber were higher in the P fertilizer plot than in NF plot. The yield of tuber amongthe treatments with mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye was the highest in the NPK fertilizer plot. The availablephosphate content in soils initially increased with time in all plots, but began to decrease gradually after Oct. 18. The available phosphate contents were high in the plots for phosphate fertilization, and the difference inavailable phosphate content between non-phosphorus fertilizer plots and phosphorus fertilizer plots increasedwith time. In the single-sown hairy vetch and mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye plot, the phosphorus balances inNF plot and NK fertilizer plot were very low, while those in the P fertilizer plot and NPK fertilizer plot werehigh. In conclusion, available phosphate contents in soil and the potato yields were increased by phosphorusfertilization when potatoes planted after cultivating hairy vetch and rye together, compared to hairy vetch alone.

In this study, aluminum borate whisker reinforced Mg-3Al-2Ag-1Zn matrix composites were fabricated by the squeeze infiltration technique. The purpose is to develop materials for elevated temperature applications. Microstructure observation revealed successful fabrication of the metal matrix composites, namely no cast defects such as porosity and matrix/reinforcement interface delamination etc. High temperature hardness and creep rupture properties were improved significantly with addition of Ag to the Al borate whisker reinforced Mg alloy composite. $Mg_3Ag$ phase formed during aging heat treatment could improve creep properties of the Mg matrix composites.
Cordyceps militaris Enhances Cell-Mediated Immunity in Healthy Korean Men

Cordyceps militaris is a mushroom traditionally used for diverse pharmaceutical purposes in East Asia, including China, and has been found to be effective for enhancing immunity through various types of animal testing. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of C. militaris for enhancing cell-mediated immunity and its safety in healthy male adults. Healthy male adults were divided into the experimental group (n = 39), given 1.5 g/day of ethanol treated C. militaris in capsules, and the control group (n = 40), given the same number of identical placebo capsules filled with microcrystalline cellulose and lactose for 4 weeks from February 13 to March 14, 2012; the natural killer (NK) cell activity, lymphocyte proliferation index (PI), and T-helper cell 1 (Th1) cytokine cluster (interferon [IFN]-γ, interleukin [IL]-12, IL-2, and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α) were measured, along with stability test, at weeks 0, 2, and 4. The C. militaris group showed a statistically significant greater increase in NK200 (P = .0010), lymphocyte PI (P ≤ .0001), IL-2 (P = .0096), and IFN-γ (P = .0126), compared with the basal level, than the placebo group. There was no statistically significant adverse reaction. C. militaris enhanced the NK cell activity and lymphocyte proliferation and partially increased Th1 cytokine secretion. Therefore, C. militaris is safe and effective for enhancing cell-mediated immunity of healthy male adults.

In this study, we developed an equation to determine nitrogen fertilizer rates for ‘Shiranuhi’ mandarin [(Citrusunshiu × C. sinensis) × C. reticulata] growing soils in plastic film houses to prevent salt accumulation andmaintain optimum nutrient levels. We analyzed the amount of applied fertilizers, soil chemical properties, andyields from 45 farms that vary in salt concentrations on Jeju Island, Korea. The results revealed that theaverage soil chemical property values, such as electrical conductivity (EC), available P2O5, and exchangeablecations (K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), were higher than the acceptable range, except for pH and organic matter. Theresults showed that higher amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus were applied through fertilizer applicationrates (N 327 kg ha-1, P2O5 294 kg ha-1, and K2O 236 kg ha-1) than the standard amount and rate of fertilizer forthe cultivation of ‘Shiranuhi’ mandarin. The EC values and NO3-N concentration in the soils had a closecorrelation (r = 0.96, p < 0.001). The yields did not differ with the amounts of the applied fertilizers whilethere was a significant negative correlation with EC values (r = -0.455, p < 0.01) and the concentration ofNO3-N (r = -0.476, p < 0.01) in the soils. Our results demonstrated that the NO3-N concentration in the soil ofplastic film houses has a substantial effect on the soil EC value. Soil EC levels may determine therecommended nitrogen fertilizer rates depending on each tree’s age.
Fertilizer NPK Recommendations for Kiwi Cultivation Based on Soil Testing in Jeju

This study was carried out in order to determine the Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward) fertilizationstandards in Jeju. Soil chemical properties and mineral contents of leaves, and the amounts of fertilizers wereinvestigated in 35 places of volcanic ash soils and in 15 places of non volcanic ash soils. Tests were made toprovide the most resonable fertilizer recommendation for kiwi fruit based on soil analytical data and leafmineral contents response to the NPK fertilizers. Average pH was 6.0, organic matter (OM) content was 113 gkg-1, available P2O5 content was 288 mg kg-1, and exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg were 1.61, 10.5, and 3.1 cmolckg-1, respectively for volcanic ash soils. Also, Average pH was 5.7, organic matter (OM) content was 48.3 gkg-1, available P2O5 content was 541 mg kg-1, and exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg were 1.45, 6.6, and 2.2 cmolckg-1, respectively for non volcanic ash soils in Jeju. Available phosphorus contents of volcanic ash soils, werelower than those of non volcanic ash soils. However, soil organic matter contents were higher than those of theoptimun range. P and Mg contents of kiwi fruit leves were lower in comparison with a suitable standard leaf,but K and Ca contents were higher. The amounts of N, P2O5, and K2O fertilizers applied to farmers' fields wereN 22.4 kg 10a-1, P2O5 21.6 kg 10a-1, and K2O 18.3 kg 10a-1 in volcanic ash soils. Those of non volcanic ashsoils were 17.1 kg 10a-1, 13.5 kg 10a-1 and 13.3 kg 10a-1. The Yield had no difference between the volcanic ashsoils and non volcanic ash soils. The relationship between soil chemical properties and amounts of fertilizeruse were observed. The soil organic matter contents werenegatively correlated with amounts of nitrogenfertilizers. Soil available phosphorus contents were negatively correlated with amounts of phosphatefertilizer. Also, Soil exchangeable potassium contents showed negative correlation with amount of potassiumfertilizer. Recommended fertilizer amounts for N and P2O5 were determined by using the soil OM andavailable P2O5 contents. Recommended K2O fertilizer were determined by exchangeable K contents in soils. Amounts of standard fertilization N-P2O5-K2O fertilizer in volcanic ash soils were 16.5-16.5-11.1 kg/10a forkiwi fruit of 8 years or older, and 13.5-8.8-9.0 kg/10a in non volcanic ash soils.
