N/A Gastrectomy is accompanied by poor oral intake and weight loss in almost all cases. For the purpose of aiding the evaluation of the postoperative clinical course of gastric cancer patients by examining the body weight changes caused by gastric resection, we checked body weight of 46 patients with gastric cancer serially for 12months after operation since January, 1991. Average weight loss at twelfth month after gastrectomy was 1.33kg in subtotal gastrectomy group, 5.95kg in total gastrectomy group, 0.08kg in gastro duodenostorny group, 1.86kg in gastro jejunostomy group, and 6.55kg in Roux-en Y esophago jejunostomy group. More than 4kg weight loss was observed one month later the operation in the group in which the postop- erative chemotherapy was taken, and there was 2.5kg of weight loss, one month after the op- eration in the group which had not taken the therapy. But 6 months later(I. E. 7 months after the operation), the amounts of weight loss in both groups became almost the same. In conclusion, we can say that the rate of weight loss according to gastrectomy reach the peak at one rnonth after the operation, and preoperative weight was almostly regained 12 months after the operation in Billroth I gastro-duodenostomy group while it could not be re- gained in Billroth II gastrojejunostomy and Roux en Y esophagojejunostomy group.(Korean J Gastroenterol 1994; 26: 417 423)
