Discal cysts of the cervical spine in two dogs
2015 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.16 No.4
Discal cysts, which lie directly over intervertebral discs, are rare. Two old dogs with tetraparesis were referred to our facility. In both animals, magnetic resonance imaging revealed intraspinal extradural cystic mass lesions that were dorsal to degenerative intervertebral discs at the C3–C4 level. These lesions had low signal intensity on T1-weighted images, and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. A ventral slot approach was used to perform surgical decompression, after which the symptoms improved remarkably. Discal cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis of dogs with cervical pain and tetraparesis. One effective treatment for discal cysts is surgical intervention.
Vol.39 No.3

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of situation-based instruction on children's academic attitude and achievement of natural science subject. The constructive method emphasizes the learner's self-guiding, cooperative learning activities, the teacher's assistant and scaffolding role. To analyze how much the situation-based instruction strategies do effect the variables, 56 subjects of 6 grade on elementary school sampled and divided two groups, experimental and comparative. The results are as follows: In the effect on academic attitude, the experimental group is significantly higher than the comparative group. Also, in the effect on academic achievement, the experimental group is significantly higher than the comparative group.
Cervical Spondylomyelopathy in Small-Breed Dogs
Vol.27 No.2
Cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM) is rarely identified in small-breed dogs. Two neutered female Pekingese dogs (less than 5 kg of body weight) with primary complaints of neck pain and paretic gait were presented. These cases were diagnosed as CSM secondary to vertebral instability through cervical survey radiography, myelography, computed tomography (CT) and CT-myelography. The combinatory treatments of ventral slot decompression, cancellous bone graft and external coaptation were performed. Clinical condition of both dogs remarkably improved and no complications or recurrence occurred following the surgical procedures. In small-breed dogs with CSM, the combination of decompression through ventral slot and stabilization through bone fusion is an effective treatment.

An 8 kg, 9-month-old castrated male Shiba Inu presented with a history of intermittent bilateral hind limblameness. On examination, grade III medial patellar luxation of the bilateral hind limbs was diagnosed. A novel surgicalmethod involving relatively noninvasive tibial tuberosity transposition was used to restore normal alignment of thequadriceps mechanism. The procedure involved an incision on the medial cortical bone of the tibial tuberosity alongthe tibial crest and placement of a cortical screw on the medial side of the tibial crest to laterally transpose the tibialtuberosity. Lameness and patellar luxation of bilateral hind limbs were improved at a 3-month postoperative examination. This technique could be considered an effective treatment for medial patellar luxation in skeletal immature patients.
Masticatory Muscle Myositis in a Maltese Dog
Vol.31 No.3
A 8-year-old, castrated male Maltese with difficulty in opening his mouth was presented. Masticatory musclemyositis (MMM) was diagnosed by 2M antibody test. After treatment of MMM with corticosteroids, range of jawmotion improved and was almost normal at 5 months. In dogs with MMM, early detection and aggressiveimmunosuppressive therapy are required to improve the prognosis.

A 4-year-old, intact female Border Collie was presented for evaluation of hearing impairment. Clinical, neurological, otoscopic and magnetic resonance imaging examinations were carried out to determine the cause of hearingloss, but no remarkable change was found. Then, brainstem auditory-evoked response test was performed to assesshearing loss, and the dog had a bilateral sensorineural deafness was revealed. Since possible causes of acquired hearingloss were ruled out by several examinations and history taking, bilateral later-onset deafness was suspected to be geneticand not congenital. This report suggested the possibility that dogs had inherited later-onset sensorineural deafness.
