Eliminating outdated grammar myths for ESL and EFL instructors and students

The purpose of this article is to examine several outdated grammar myths and illustrate why, in the interest of furthering English education around the world, they should be set aside by progressive-minded EFL and ESL teachers and students. All current and future English speakers need to learn and understand the rules of grammar in order to fully master the language. However, many guidelines that are believed to be English grammar rules are actually myths that have lingered in the lexicon for decades or centuries. They carry with them confusion and misunderstanding, often standing in the way of second language learners and teachers. These troublesome myths must be identified and set aside for the good of students and teachers of English. Therefore, this study examined some current grammar myths and identified why they should be eliminated. Because of the scope of one study, a limited number of myths and issues were addressed. Further study on the topic should be performed.

봉화군의 딸기 생산성을 증대시키기 위해서는 연장재배 기술을 보완 재배농가에 보급하므로써 전국 44%수준인 생산성을 극대화하여 소득성을 높일 수 있다. 이러한 연장재배 기술로 고려되어야 할 점들은 다음과 같다. 딸기품종은 후기세력이 우수하고 개화 및 착과가 가능한 "수홍", "아이베리", "보교조생" 등이 알맞다. 묘선택에 있어서는 관부직경이 9∼13mm 사이의 젊은 우량묘를 사용하는 것이다. 후기 세력유지를 위해서는 초기 착과량을 조절하고 화학비료 위주의 재배를 탈피하고 유기질 위주를 밑거름 사용을 최대한 증대하는 일이다. 그리고 토양개량을 통한 건실한 뿌리육성과 활력 있는 생육을 만들어 나가는 것이 중요하다.
Fuctional Grammar and Language Teaching: A New Reference towards EFL Learning

Recently there is a recognized link between a high-level of English language proficiency and success in the fields of business, careers and politics. Increasing globalization and the acceptance of English as the main international language has driven language learners to re-assess their linguistic targets. Previously, there was a strong bias towards acquiring a native north-American accent. Now, there is more emphasis on establishing a grammatical foundation that will allow unobstructed integration in an English-speaking environment. Therefore, traditional forms of grammar instruction need to be modernized. Simple knowledge of form and structure is insufficient. There is a real need to know how to apply this knowledge to real-life situations. This paper will deal with proposals for a radical modernizing of grammar role within EFL curriculums. The paper will also evaluate the benefits of teaching functional grammar in an EFL classroom. Studies have shown that systemic linguistics affect EFL students’ whole process of language learning, not just their oral communication skills. Teacher education programs can use this study as a reference guide. In addition, learners will increase their communicative proficiency by studying the examples of functional grammar.
