한문고전의 활용―대중화의 전제 조건 - 떠나보내야 할 과거와 취해야 할 길

한문학 연구가 위기의 국면에 놓여 있다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 위기를 돌파를 위해서 우리는 무엇을 해야 할 것인가. 한문은 이제 소수만이 해독하는 秘典의 언어가 되었다. 이 비전의 언어는 이제 곧 소멸할지도 모른다. 소멸을 거부하고자 한다면, 대중과의 접촉을 통해 그것의 가치를 인정받아야 할 것이다. 대중과 접촉하기 위해서는 전문성을 표방하는 난해한 글쓰기가 아니라, 대중에게 보다 쉽게 읽힐 수 있는 글쓰기가 필요하다. 그리고 대중과의 접촉을 시도하는 새로운 글쓰기는 문학에 최대의 가치를 문학주의의 낡은 상상력이 아니라, 모든 인문학의 영역을 횡단하는 새로운 상상력에 의한 글쓰기여야 할 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 한문이란 언어, 그리고 그 언어로 쓰여진 한문학에 휘감겨 있는 낡고 추한 그 아우라들―시대착오적 가치관과 윤리도덕을 비판적으로 인식하고, 그것에 대해 결별해야 할 것이다. 동시에 한국한문학에 이제까지 의미를 부여해 왔던 민족주의를 냉철한 눈으로 다시 검토해야 할 것이다. 궁극적으로 한문학 연구는 전통과 민족의 압력으로부터 해방되면서, 다시 인간과 생명이란 토대 위에서 새롭게 이루어져야 할 것이다. It is commonly known that teaching and research in the field of Chinese Classics have been in crisis due to the lack of interests among the general public. Thus it is time to contemplate what should be done to recover its popularity. The fundamental problem with Chinese Classics is that only a few can read Chinese. Chinese has become a mysterious script to many, and as a result the language might soon vanish. If this sad destiny should be prevented, one needs to work on making this language more approachable. Writings in Chinese should be easy to read instead of being so complicated that an expert level of knowledge in that language is required. This new style of writing aims to communicate with the ordinary people, rejecting the old school of emphasizing its supreme existence. This new writing needs to be sufficiently imaginative to be able to cross into all fields of Humanities. Moreover, an aura of despair and backwardness that has wound around Chinese Classics should go with the language itself. We also need to depart from the outdated values and ethics that have prevailed in the old style of Chinese Classics. At the same time nationalism common in Korean-Chinese Classics be critically re-examined. Ultimately, research in Chinese Classics should be liberated from the pressures of tradition and nation, and revitalized through the essence of humans and life.
