Background and Objectives:We aimed to evaluate the effects of septal deviation on patient symptoms and acoustic rhinometry measurements in patients with allergic rhinitis and to determine which side of the septum is the better choice. Materials and Methods:The bilateral nasal provocation test with acoustic rhinometry was performed on patients with septal deviation and allergic rhinitis (Group A, n=25) and in patients with allergic rhinitis alone (Group B, n=26). Fifteen to 60 minutes after provocation, the change in symptoms as measured by the visual analogue scale, the change in total nasal volume (TNV) and minimal cross-sectional area (MCA) were compared between the concave and convex septal sides. The degrees of change in TNV and MCA were also compared between the groups. Results:Group A had higher basal values and more changes in nasal obstruction than did Group B. Changes in TNV and MCA were most prominent after 30 minutes on both sides, without significant differences. By summing the sides together, we were able to obtain more stable results without paradoxical increase. Conclusion:Septal deviation itself has little effect on the result of nasal provocation in patients with allergic rhinitis. By summing the parameters of acoustic rhinometry from both nasal cavities, clinicians can achieve more stable results.y
폐냉매(HFCs) 전용 소각로에서 고효율 파괴 실험 연구

폐 자동차 및 전자제품에서 배출되는 폐냉매를 회수/정제하여 재활용하는 기술을 우선 적용하며, 정제 후 기술적/경제적인 한계 등으로 재활용 하는 것이 불가능한 경우 파괴하여 HFCs의 대기 배출을 방지하는 것이 바람직하다. 기존의 폐 HFC 처리방법은 크게 3가지인데 각각 열분해법인 소각과 촉매산화 그리고 플라즈마 분해방법이다. 이중 촉매 산화법은 촉매피독, 탄소에 의한 촉매표면의 오염이 발생하는 단점이 있고 플라즈마는 보통 스팀 플라즈마를 사용하는데 부산물인 HF로 인한 부식문제와 스팀으로 인한 방전 불안정성과 대용량화하기가 어렵다는 단점이 있다. 열적 처리인 소각은 화석 연료를 사용하고 초기 가동시 연소 온도 설정 및 시동시간이 필요하며 기존의 소각, 연소장치를 이용하지 않을 경우 초기 투자비가 높은 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 폐 냉매 전용 소각을 위한 연소장치를 최적 설계하기 위하여 유동장, 온도장등 수치해석적 연구를 수행하였으며, 수치해석을 통한 설계 결과를 이용하여 연소장치를 제작하여 폐냉매 파괴 실험을 수행하였다.
이변량 감소모델을 적용한 배급수관망에서의 잔류염소농도 예측 및 이의 활용

It is important to predict chlorine decay with different water purification processes and distribution pipeline materials, especially because chlorine decay is in direct relationship with the stability of water quality. The degree of chlorine decay may affect the water quality at the end of the pipeline: it may produce disinfection by-products or cause unpleasant odor and taste. Sand filtrate and dual media filtrate were used as influents in this study, and cast iron (CI), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stainless steel (SS) were used as pipeline materials. The results were analyzed via chlorine decay models by comparing the experimental and model parameters. The models were then used to estimate rechlorination time and chlorine decay time. The results indicated that water quality (e.g. organic matter and alkalinity) and pipeline materials were important factors influencing bulk decay and sand filtrate exhibited greater chlorine decay than dual media filtrate. The two-component second-order model was more applicable than the first decay model, and it enabled the estimation of chlorine decay time. These results are expected to provide the basis for modeling chlorine decay of different water purification processes and pipeline materials.
양측 비강에 다발성으로 발생한 거대 골수외 형질세포종 1예

A 52-year-old patients suffering from nasal stuffiness had necrotic, ulcerative polypoid mass in both nasal cavity. CT and MRI revealed bilateral polypoid mass with bony invasion in left maxillary anterior and posterior wall, left pterygopalatine fossa and right central skull base. The patient was diagnosed as plasmacytoma by histologic examination. To rule out multiple myeloma, several additive studies such as bone scan, bone marrow biopsy, urine Bence-Jons protein, serum protein electrophoresis, peripheral blood smear were performed and all results were negative. The patient was transferred to department of hemato-oncology and got 2 times of chemotherapy consisting of cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone and radiotherapy (5400 cGy / 30 fractionation). A month after the completion of chemoradiotherapy, the sized of mass decreased significantly without evidence of progression.
Effect of Sleep Deprivation on the Inflammatory Response in Rats: A Pilot Study

We aimed to identify the association between sleep deprivation and inflammatory response. Fourteen-week old male Wistar rats were used randomly assigned to a sleep deprivation [sleep deprivation (SD) group, n = 3] or a control [healthy sleep (HS) group, n = 3] group. To induce sleep deprivation, we used a modified multiple platform method. We examined serum interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), corticosterone, the number of inflammatory cells in broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and the histopathology of the pulmonary parenchyma (peri-bronchiolar infiltration) between the SD and the HS groups. The SD group showed an increase in serum IL-1β, corticosterone, the number of neutrophil and eosinophil in BALF, and peri-bronchiolar infiltration of eosinophils compared to the HS group. However, serum IL-1β and the number of inflammatory cells in BALF, except for corticosterone and eosinophil in lung parenchyma, were statistically insignificant. We suggest that SD may be associated with worsening of allergic inflammatory response.
