A cecropin-like antimicrobial peptide, Gm cecropin, was purified from hemolymph of larvae of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella, immunized against E. coli, and its antibacterial activity was examined in a radial diffusion assay. The molecular mass of Gm cecropin was 4,160.69 Da by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis. The full-length cDNA of the Gm cecropin precursor was cloned by a combination of RT-PCR, based on the N-terminal sequence obtained by Edman degradation, and 5-RACE-PCR. Analysis of the cDNA showed that cecropin is synthesized as a prepropeptide, with a pu-tative 22-residue signal peptide, a 4-residue propeptide and a 39-residue mature peptide with a calculated mass of 4,344.18 Da the difference between the calcu-lated and measured masses suggests that Gm cecropin is a 37-residue peptide generated by removal of the C-terminal residue and amidation.

Irinotecan (CPT-11) is a chemotherapeutic agent that inhibits topoisomerase I and has shown efficacy against advanced colorectal cancer. Diarrhea is the most common toxicity that has been reported to be as high as 87% in patients treated with irinotecan. However, the serious complications including acute hemorrhagic colitis, intestinal ulceration, and intestinal perforation may be uncommon events with irinotecan therapy. We report the first Korean case of acute hemorrhagic colitis induced by irinotecan administration in the patient with advanced colon cancer.

Colored oyster mushrooms, P. salmoneostramineus(Pink), P. cornucopiae(yellow), P. ostreatus(dark-gray), were investigated for their antioxidant and anticancer activities. Among the three mushroom extracts, the P. cornucopiae extract (2mg/ml) showed the strongest ability in each assay, showing 84.4% of DPPH radical scavenging activity, 0.532 of reducing power, 85.2% of Fe2+-chelating ability. Total phenolic content of P. cornucopiae was also higher than those of that. Positive correlations were found between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The extract of P. ostreatus and P. salmoneostramineus showed high suppressive effects in the treatment of 500㎍/ml against HT-29(human colon cancer cell line) with survival rates of 39.9 and 40.7%, respectively.

This study aimed to develop a new method of Lentinula edodes cultivation to reduce labor and waste disposal. To identify the optimum container for L. edodes cultivation, box, bottle, and bag containers were assessed for their effects on the cultural characteristics and mushroom yield. Among the three approaches, box-cultivation with 7 kg of substrate had the shortest browning period (42 days) and resulted in the highest mushroom yield (1,253 g). Contrastingly, bottle-cultivation was unsuitable for cultivation due to low production of the fruiting bodies and poor quality. Further studies on the box-cultivation approach will be required for commercial applications of L. edodes.
