In this thesis, 1 divided the originality of fire into several parts-'sexual fire', 'burning fire', 'purified fire', etc-and tried to link them with stylistic technique. At this view, 1 selected short stories of authors who had occupiea important position. Among them, 'Kwang-Yeom-Sonata' written by Kim, Dongin, 'Pul' by Hyeon, Jingeon and 'Peongeori-Samryongi' by Na, Dohyang are best examples of my thesis. These stories have stylistic features in dealing with fire as their object. In 'Kwang-Yeom-Sonata', One can find the fact that the author treated the meaning of wildness and horror as sexual fire in stylistic plane. But they were presented as fire of lower intensity because of technical narrative features. In 'Pul', Hyeon, Jingeon stylized fire with the originality of 'taboo destructing' and 'sexual fire'. And it is available to treat its style with the originality of 'purified fire'. In 'Peongeori-Samryongi', Na, Dohyang stylized fire more intensively than the former authors. The fire of his work was presented as 'sexual fire', 'burning water' and 'burning heart' with stylistic characteristic. The common shared property of these authors is stylistic feature of fire, which is underlied in the base of their works. This shows sexual desires are the motives of human behavior and emergence of Id.
This thesis examines his understanding on the diversity of representation focusing on Julian Barnes’ work Talking It Over. This work suggests representation’s relativity. Although the three protagonists in Talking It Over are involved in the same event, their respective stories about the event are different from each other. In addition, they do not talk to each other even in the situation when they have to and unlike the original title, the characters tell their stories, not to each other, but to readers. Like this, the fact that there are various stories as to the same event is because their stories are based on their distinctive memories, point of view and interpretations etc. Barnes shows that there can be errors when represented even it’s the past directly seen and experienced rather than memory. Moreover, among these characters, he sets up Gillian’s occupation as a restorer where he suggests incompleteness of past representation through restorer’s occupation. Furthermore, the character Oliver reads Shostakovich’s memoir. Shostakovich is said to record only what he has seen. At the same time, he says that in Russia there’s a proverb saying “People lie as if they have seen.” This proverb implies this novel’s theme. That is, although people are known to say only what they have seen, this is only in effort and lies are always contained as one’s interpretation and ego are intervened within one’s words. In the end, representation of the past cannot but be expressed diversely, depending on the person representing it. For this reason, past representation is not objective or absolute but relative and subjective.
Abstract A History and Fiction in A History of the World in 10½ Chapters Kim, Jeong-Ja (Nazarene University) This is a study of A History of the World in 10½ Chapters by Julian Barnes focused on a history and fiction. He presented a recapitulation theory of history that has been continued since the dawn of history. The motive has been continued since Noah had animals on the Ark to avoid the Deluge, having distinguished them into clean animals and dirty ones. In addition, he showed a process in which Gericault depicted a shipwreck into a painting and that he chose historic events for his art. Barnes suggested, through Gericault’s work process, that historians also select historical events based on their needs. Selection of historical records by a historian means that history moves on subjectively and relatively, not objectively. Barnes admitted that history is a fiction that dramatizes facts and makes various attempts to find reality in this complexity. Although history does not show purely objective facts, he did not despair but emphasized love as an alternative. He emphasized that only love can restore the sad history of mankind that is shown through the recapitulation theory of history.
