      • Maximal Oxygen Uptake and Running Efficiency in Distance Running Performance of Highly Trained Collegiate Runners

        本 硏究는 高度로 訓練된 大學長距離選手들의 競技成績에 있어서 最大酸素攝取量과 走行效率性의 重要度에 對한 相關 關係를 分析하였으며, 本 硏究에서 밝혀진 結果는 最大酸素攝取能力과 10,000meter競技의 走行 pace와의 相關關係는 (r=0.13) 높은 VO₂max의 有酸素能力을 가지고 있는 同質 集團에서는 높은 有意性이 없으며, 走行效率性과 競技成績과는 매우 有意한 相關關係를 나타내었다. (r=0.75) The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of maximal oxygen uptake and running efficiency in highly trained male collegiate runners to their performance in a 10, 000meter race. The ten selected subjects were collegiate male long distance runners who have attended at the University of South Carolina, U.S.A. Treadmill running was utilized for the laboratory measurement of maximal and submaximal oxygen consumption because it provides a valid picture of the physiological responses which accompany track running. Maximal oxygen uptake was determined using a continuous protocol. Treadmill speed was kept at 8mile/hr(214.4m/min) for all stages. Subjects completed a three minutes warming up at level grade. Grade was then increased 2¹/₂percent for each subsequent two minutes until the subject reached exhaustion. A correlation analysis was used to determine if a significant relationship existed between distance running performance and maximal oxygen uptake and running efficiency. Relationships were analyzed for singificance at the five percent level of confidence. The results of this research indicated that the relationship between maximal aerobic capacity and running pace for the 10,000 meter race(r=0.13) was not significant at the five percent level of confidence. This does not argue against the importance of a high VO₂max for success in distance running performance because all the subjects possessed very high maximal aerobic power. Rather, the data suggest that among subjects with equally high VO₂ max's aerobic capacity is not a determining factor for competitive sucess. The relationship between running efficiency(VO₂) at the mean race pace of 214-10.0/min and performance in the 10,000meter races(r=0.75) was significant at the one percent level of confidence. It was concluded that of the factors studied in this study the significant factor determining competitive success in the 10,000 meter run for highly trained collegiate male distance runners was their running efficiency and not their maximal aerobic capacties.

        Computational Approach for the Analysis of Post-PKS Glycosylation Step

        We introduce a computational approach for analysis of glycosylation in Post-PKS tailoring steps. It is a computational method to predict the deoxysugar biosynthesis unit pathway and the substrate specificity of glycosyltransferases involved in the glycosylation of polyketides. In this work, a directed and weighted graph is introduced to represent and predict the deoxysugar biosynthesis unit pathway. In addition, a homology based gene clustering method is used to predict the substrate specificity of glycosyltransferases. It is useful for the rational design of polyketide natural products, which leads to in silico drug discovery.

        CpG Islands Detector: a Window-based CpG Island Search Tool

        CpG is the pair of nucleotides C and G, appearing successively, in this order, along one DNA strand. It is known that due to biochemical considerations CpG is relatively rare in most DNA sequences. However, in particular subsequences, which are a few hundred to a few thousand nucleotides long, the couple CpG is more frequent. These subsequences, called CpG islands, are known to appear in biologically more significant parts of the genome. The ability to identify CpG islands along a chromosome will therefore help us spot its more significant regions of interest, such as the promoters or 'start' regions of many genes. In this respect, I developed the CpG islands search tool, CpG Islands Detector, which was implemented in JAVA to be run on any platform. The window-based graphical user interface of CpG Islands Detector may facilitate the end user to employ this tool to pinpoint CpG islands in a genomic DNA sequence. In addition, this tool can be used to highlight potential genes in genomic sequences since CpG islands are very often found in the 5' regions of vertebrate genes.

        Computational Approach for Biosynthetic Engineering of Post-PKS Tailoring Enzymes

        Compounds of polyketide origin possess a wealth of pharmacological effects, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, anticancer and immunosuppressive activities. Many of these compounds and their semisynthetic derivatives are used today in the clinic. Most of the gene clusters encoding commercially important drugs have also been cloned and sequenced and their biosynthetic mechanisms studied in great detail. The area of biosynthetic engineering of the enzymes involved in polyketide biosynthesis has recently advanced and been transferred into the industrial arena. In this work, we introduce a computational system to provide the user with a wealth of information that can be utilized for biosynthetic engineering of enzymes involved in post-PKS tailoring steps. Post-PKS tailoring steps are necessary to add functional groups essential for the biological activity and are therefore important in polyketide biosynthesis.

      • '삼국사기'와 '삼국유사' : 역사와 문학의 만남

        모든 학문이 추구하는 것은 진실이다. 역사학이 사실서사를 통해 진실을 밝힌다면, 문학은 허구서사를 통해 진실을 드러낸다. 그런데 이 둘 가운데 무엇이 진실로 들어가는 더 큰 문일까? 아리스토텔레스는 󰡔시학󰡕에서 실제로 일어난 일을 이야기하는 역사보다는 일어날 법한 일을 이야기하는 시가 진실에 이르는 더 큰 문이라고 주장했다. 시는 보편적인 것을 말하지만 역사는 개별적인 것을 말하기 때문에 그렇다는 것이다. 아리스토텔레스가 설정한 문학과 역사의 우선순위는 동아시아 서사전통에서는 역전되었다. 예컨대 역사서사인󰡔삼국사기󰡕가 문학서사인󰡔삼국유사󰡕보다 더 진실에 가까운 것으로 여겨졌다. 서사가 서구에서는 허구에서 역사가 분리하는 방향으로 전개됐다면, 동아시아에서는 반대로 역사로부터 허구가 분화하는 방향으로 나갔다. 근대에 이르러 동서양 모두에서 사실과 진실을 일치시키는 근대 사실주의는 허구를 통해 진실로 들어가는 문을 차단했다. 사실주의 문법에 따라 문학이 역사를 모방하는 역사소설과 같은 장르가 생겨났다. 탈근대에서 팩션의 등장은 사실만이 진실이라는 근대 사실주의 문법의 해체를 의미한다. 이 같은 맥락에서 본 논문은 사실과 허구는 진실과 거짓의 등식이 아닌 현실서사와 꿈의 서사로 이해돼야 한다는 것을 󰡔삼국사기󰡕와󰡔삼국유사󰡕에 대한 비교연구를 통해 해명한다. 탈근대주의 문법에 따르면, 󰡔삼국사기󰡕가 역사서사라면󰡔삼국유사󰡕는 팩션이라는 것이 본 논문의 테제다.

        Fe-Cr-Mo 합금 분말의 성형 및 소결특성에 미치는 입도분포 영향

        The effect of particle size distribution on green and sintered properties of Fe-Cr-Mo prealloy powder was investigated in this study. For the study, prealloyed Fe-Cr-Mo powders with different particle sizes were mixed as various ratios and cold compacted at various pressure and sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, $90%N_2+10%H_2$ atmosphere in the continuous sintering furnace. The results shows that the powders with large particle size distribution have high compressibility and low ejection force. However the green strength are much less than those with small particle size distribution. Tensile prperties of the sintered specimes with large particles size also have high strength and elongation.

        Web-Based Computational System for Protein- Protein Interaction Inference

        Recently, high-throughput technologies such as the two-hybrid system,protein chip, Mass Spectrometry, and the phage display have furnished a lot of data on protein-protein interactions (PPIs), but the data has not been accurate so far and the quantity has also been limited. In this respect, computational techniques for the prediction and validation of PPIs have been developed. However, existing computational methods do not take into account the fact that a PPI is actually originated from the interactions of domains that each protein contains. So, in this work, the information on domain modules of individual proteins has been employed in order to find out the protein interaction relationship. The system developed here, WASPI (Web-based Assistant System for Protein-protein interaction Inference), has been implemented to provide many functional insights into the protein interactions and their domains. To achieve those objectives,several preprocessing steps have been taken. First, the domain module information of interacting proteins was extracted by taking advantage of the InterPro database, which includes protein families, domains, and functional sites. The InterProScan program was used in this preprocess. Second, the homology comparison with the GO (Gene Ontology)and COG (Clusters of Orthologous Groups) with an E-value of 10-5, 10-3 respectively, was employed to obtain the information on the function and annotation of each interacting protein of a secondary PPI database in the WASPI.
