Swine plasminogen is not activated by staphylokinase of Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, the activation of swine plasminogen by staphylokinase of Staph hyicus subsp. hyicus was investigated and the effect of EDTA(disodium) on plasminogen activation was also studied. When the activation of swine plasminogen by staphylokinase of Staph hyicus subsp. hyicus was examined in fresh swine plasma, swine plasminogen could be weakly activated. However, when EDTA was added to the swine plasma, plasminogen activation was markedly enhanced, but this enhancement was not observed on bovine fibrin-dog plasminogen agar plate containing EDTA. Chicken and bovine plasminogens were not activated by staphylokinase of Staph hyicus subsp. hyicus. Using fresh swine plasma agar containing 0.07% EDTA, staphylokinase activity was detected in 96.3% of Staph hyicus subsp. hyicus strains isolated from pigs and in none of the chicken and bovine strains.

Staphylokinase is seldom formed by animal Staphylococcus aureus strains. In this study, 76(72.4%) of 105 Staph aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitis were found to produce a staphylokinase. These staphylokinase producing strains were tested for lysogenic conversion by means of delysogenization procedure and isolation of serotype B and F converting phages. By the application of delysogenization method comprised of UV irradiation and acriflavine treatment to 76 staphylokinase-positive strains, the delysogenized cells could be observed in 29(38.2%) of the strains and delysogenization rates in 16(55.2%) of 29 delysogenized strains were 0.9% or less. A total of 7 serological group F phages were isolated from 76 staphylokinase-positive strains, and these phages could be again divided into three groups by the immunity reaction. Of 7 serotype F phages, 2 were isolated from the original lysogenic strains producing colonies of delysogenized cells after delysogenizing treatments and 5 were isolated from strains in which delysogenized cells were not observed after delysogenizing treatments. Difference of sensitivities to serological group F phages between original lysogenic strains and strains from which delysogenized cells were not isolated after delysogenizing treatments was not observed These data suggest that staphylokinase production of the remaining 42 strains might be also mediated by lysogenic conversion.

The lytic activity of the set of swine and chicken phages which were derived from lysogenic Staphylococcus hyicus strains of swine and chicken origin was compared by means of S. hyicus isolated from swine, chicken and cattle. Of the 80 strains each from swine and chicken, 71 (88.8%) of strains from swine and all the strains of chicken origin were found to be lysogenic. Swine phages showed wider range of lytic activity to the examined strains than that of chicken phages. Using chicken phages at $100{\times}routine$ test dilution (RTD), 25.0%, 85.6% and 50.0% of swine, chicken and bovine strains were lysed, respectively. However, when the set of swine phages was used at $100{\times}RTD$, higher frequency of the typable strains was found in strains of swine and chicken origin (73.8% and 90.2%). Phage F12 and L16 from chicken set were found to be highly active with chicken and bovine strains. On the contrary, all the swine strains were completely resistant to lysis by the two phages at $100{\times}RTD$. Thirteen (12.5%) of 104 S. aureus strains, 1 (1.8%) of 55 S. simudance strains, 31 (58.5%) of 53 S. chromo genes strains, and none of 31 strains of other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species isolated from bovine mastitis were typable with the set of swine phages.

The serological typing of staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from pigs with exudative epidermitis and healthy pigs was attempted by slide agglutination technique with absorbed sera prepared from antisera against swine strains of the organism. Of 204 Staph. hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated, 202 (99.0%) were classified into 6 serotypes tentatively designated as A, B, C, D, E and F. The organisms were found to possess common antigens and a strain specific antigen. In 26 epizootics of exudative epidermitis, type A was found in 4(15.4%), type B in 12(46.2%), type C in 9(34.6%) and type E in 1(3.8%). All of the piglets of each affected litter were infected by serologically identical strain. In 178 strains isolated from the skin of healthy pigs, type A was found in 14.1%, type B in 23.0%, type C in 30.3%, type D in 1.7%, type E in 7.9% and type F in 21.9%, and 2 strains were untypable. There was a difference in the occurrence of serotypes of Staph. hyicus subsp. hyicus among the farms examined.

A total of 204 strains of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from piglets suffering from exudative epidermitis and healthy pigs were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. The growth of all isolates of Staph. hyicus subsp. hyicus tested was inhibited by cloxacillin(Cx) at a concentration of $0.8{\mu}g/ml$ and by cefazolin (Cf) at a concentration of $0.4{\mu}g/ml$, and by gentamicin and methicillin at a minimum inhibitory concentration of $3.2{\mu}g/ml$. Of total isolates obtained from the diseased and healthy pigs, 69.6% were resistant to penicillin G, 53.4% to tetracycline, 11.8% to kanamycin and 0.5% to chloramphenicol, with considerable variations among farms in the occurrence of resistant strains and resistance patterns to the drugs. By application of Cx or Cf which was active to the organism, piglets exposed to infection were successfully protected from the disease, but piglets suffering from already severe exudative epidermitis did not respond to treatment.

One hundred and twenty seven strains of Gram-negative rods (72 E. coli, 45 Klebsieila pneumoniae, 8 Enterobacter spp. and 2 Pseudomonas aeruginosa) isolated from bovine mastitis were examined for resistance to ampicilin, carbenicillin and cefazolin, ${\beta}$-lactamase activity and transferable ${\beta}$-lactamase plasmids. Stains resistant to ampicillin were 13.9% in E. coli, 93.3% in Klebsiella pneumoniae, 87.5% in Enterobacter. spp. and all in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Resistance of E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter spp. to ampicillin was due to the ${\beta}$-lactamases, but all Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibited a high level of the non-enzymic resistance. Transferable plasmid-mediated ${\beta}$-lactamase synthesis was demonstrated in 61.9% of Klebsiella pneumoniae, 50% of E. coli and 42.9% of Enterobacter spp. The same ${\beta}$-lactamase plasmids specified different resistance levels to various ${\beta}$-lactam antibiotics in different recipients.

Isolation of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus from piglets suffering from exudative epidermitis and healthy pigs was performed, and some properties of the isolates were examined. Twentry-six litters of exudative epidermitis observed in the field were sucking piglets with ages ranging from 1 to 5 weeks and most (73.1%) of these cases occurred in piglets between 2 and 3 weeks of age. Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus was isolated front 192(38.9%) of 494 healthy pigs. The rate of isolation of these organism from healthy pigs was found to vary greatly among farms at an isolation rate of 33.3% to 45.5% and this organism was isolated more frequently front sucking piglets below the age of 8 weeks than adult pigs. All of the isolates originated from the diseased and healthy pigs were positive in heat-stable DNase, Tween 80 hydrolysis, gelatinase, protease, but negative in clumping factor and hemelysin on sheep blood agar. There was no difference related to origin in the production of extracellular active substances. Typical lesions of the classic exudative epidermitis were produced by inoculation of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from the diseased and healthy pigs. The pathogenic potentials of isolates from healthy pigs were no different from that of the isolates obtained from diseased pigs.

The in vitro activity of penicillins(penicillin G, ampicillin, carbenicillin, methicillin and cloxacillin) and gentamicin to Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitic milk samples was determined. The growth of all isolates of staphylococci tested was inhibited by cloxacillin and methicillin at a concentration of $0.78{\mu}g/ml$ and by gentamicin at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of $1.56{\mu}g/ml$. Of the 140 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated 99(70.7%) gave positive reactions for penicillinase on the starch-iodine test. Of 121 isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci, 58(47.9%) showed penicillinase production, but all the Staph. xylosus lacked the ability to produce penicillinase. MIC of penicillin G of the penicillinase-positive strains was $0.2{\mu}g/ml$ or more. The combination of cloxacillin with gentamicin showed a synergistic effect by inhibiting regrowth of the tested organism.

The distribution of slide coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitic milk samples was investigated mainly according to Kloos and Schleifer's classification scheme, and toxigenic and enzymatic characteristics of these strains were also examined. One-hundred-and-twenty-one strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated were classified into 8 species. Of these species, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staph. xylosus, Staph. haemolyticus and Staph. simulans were more frequently found in bovine mastitic milk samples, and toxin and enzyme production of these species were observed in relatively high frequency. Staph. hyicus subsp. hyicus was isolated from the 4 quarters with clinical mastitis included in this investigation. By the use of Baird-Parker and Pelzer's classification system, 44.6% and 18.2% of the strains could not be classified in any subgroup, respectively.

In order to know the current status of sensitivity of Corynebacterium renale to some antimicrobial agents of current use, the sensitivity of 37 strains isolated from urine and vaginal cavity of healthy Korean native cattle and dairy cattle was studied by agar plate dilution method, and their sensitivity according to serological types was compared. The antimicrobial agents tested were streptomycin (SM), erythromycin (EM), oxytetracycline (OT), penicillin G (PC), gentamycin (GM), kanamycin (KM), ampicillin (AP), leucomycin (LM), chloramphenicol (CM), colistin (CL), sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfadiazine (SDZ). Most strains were highly sensitive to PC, GM, AP, LM and KM, and moderate to CM and OT, but resistant to SM, EM, CL, SDM and SDZ. Serological type II was more sensitive to EM, SDM and SDZ than type I and II, but more resistant to SM.
