Metal nanoparticle (NP)‐catalyzed electron transfer (ET) from a reducing agent to a metal complex is useful for signal amplification in biosensors. For efficient ET, the metal complex must undergo rapid outer‐sphere reactions, be highly water‐soluble, and effectively penetrate bio/organic layers on metal NPs. Our study identifies Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ as well‐suited for this purpose. Among reducing agents, ammonia‐borane (AB) enables rapid metal NP‐catalyzed ET, with Au, Pt, and Pd NPs displaying similar catalytic activities. The pseudo second‐order rate constant for 20‐nm Au NP‐catalyzed ET from AB to Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ (1.4 × 10 8 M −1 s −1 ) approaches the diffusion‐controlled rate constant. Despite immunoglobulin G and bovine serum albumin passively adsorbed on Au NPs, catalytic activity remains largely unaffected. Applying Au NP‐catalyzed ET to prostate‐specific antigen detection in human serum achieves a low detection limit of 10 pg/mL. These findings highlight the potential of Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ and AB in designing biosensors based on rapid catalytic reaction. This paper is to study Doris Lessing’s The Fifth Child through family trauma. According to E. Ann Kaplan, the family trauma is trauma of loss, abandonment, rejection and betrayal related to whatever the accidents are about. Deidre Barrett points out that the family trauma is related to common events that are potentially or inevitably encountered in the course of a normal life. The family trauma, which is called common or quiet trauma, can be dramatic and soul-destroying. In The Fifth Child, Ben is rejected by his parents as well as his siblings because of his unique appearance and personality. He is said to be a throwback, who might find his place in a primitive era, not in a modern society. In fact, he looks like a troll, shows anger whenever he is banned from doing what he wants, roars to show his discontent and, what is worse, is suspected of killing animals. The problem is that his family cannot accept him as their family member, nor does he get into the family. However, he makes friends with dropouts from school and becomes a leader of the group that is sure to hang around the back streets. He seems to be a shadow/dwarf, where, as Lorelei Cederstrom argues it, the family projects qualities they do not wish to see in themselves. Therefore, Ben terrorizes them as they are not ready to confront him while with a sense of alienation the family makes Ben feel frightened and moreover insensitive to the sufferings of others.

“To make you see” is one of Joseph Conrad’s constant concerns in his writings to render the highest kind of truth to the visible world by highlighting its every aspect. In his fourth novel, Lord Jim (1900), he uses the images of animals and the colors to get across his message to the reader. Through this technique, the reader is left to form an impression of the protagonist’s exterior or interior state from which they can attempt to read the protagonist’s real motivation in his/her action. In Lord Jim, a young seaman named Jim, who serves as the chief mate on the Patna, jumps from the ship leaving behind the passengers when he confronts shipwreck. After that he is in search of some atonement in the Patusan where his past remains hidden. This story is described by Conrad’s storyteller named Marlow, who is sympathetic to Jim’s plight but discerns in him an affliction of helplessness as a human being. To show that Jim’s inner world is not easy for Marlow to understand, the images of animals such as butterflies, beetles, curs, turtles, and owls are used to symbolize the negative aspect of Jim’s nature. The colors, in particular, dark and white colors are also used to represent Marlow’s judgement of Jim’s incomprehensible inner world and action on the Patna. Here, however, the difference between black and white or darkness and light is ambiguous and they might be exchangeable in meaning. That is, Jim’s jump from the Patna is a demonstration of some obscure attribute of our nature which is not far under the surface of our mind. Therefore, Conrad reveals in Lord Jim that Jim is one of us who is not only imperfect but also the weaknesses inside that can unexpectedly emerge in an instant by using the symbol technique of the images of animals and colors.
Possessing the Fairy Melusina’s “Self-sufficient” Identity in A. S. Byatt’s Possession: A Romance
박선화 한국중앙영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학연구 Vol.53 No.2
The purpose of this paper is to see the fairy tale of Melusina written by LaMotte as a motif for understanding the female characters in A. S. Byatt’s Possession: A Romance (1990). Melusina is an embodiment of the “self-sufficient identity” in that she is “capable of generation life, or meanings, on her own,” without the need of external help. Possession is the tale of the two young scholars, Maud Baily and Roland Michell, researching the lives of two Victorian Poets, Christabel LaMotte and Randolph Ash. The story begins with Michell’s discovering secret love letters written by Ash to an unknown woman. He asks for some help from Baily to do some more research on this secret. In the course of the quest, Baily and Michell find out the two poets had a daughter. At the same time, this quest leads Baily to reconsider women writers’ positions in the Victorian age as well as in modern society. The female characters seem to seek solutions about their own problems as either a scholar or artist by themselves. In particular, LaMotte and Baily represent a woman artist or scholar’s independent position transcending time and space. For their independence, women characters transform themselves. This is related to the aspect of Melusina who changes herself into a good wife or a dragon. That is, shape shifting is used as a strategy for a woman who wants to possess her “self-sufficient” identity. LaMotte changes her hair style and avoids revealing her daughter because she wants to protect her from the society’s repression. Baily changes her attitude towards a man and comes to possess her identity through both being possessed by and possessing Michell, like Vivien in the Merlin and Vivien tale. In order to show these female tales crossing the boundaries of time and space, Byatt uses the genre of Romance in that she thinks the soul can be free of the restraints of history and fact. She highlights Romance can be a good tool for women artists to express their true natures freely. With this, Byatt deals with the discovery of a variety of unheard female voices with the fairy tale of Melusina.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the experience and support needs of teachers educating children with severe and multiple disabilities in Korea. Method: To achieve this, a qualitative meta-analysis was conducted on the seven published qualitative studies related to the education of children with severe and multiple disabilities published in Korea. The analysis followed the 7-step qualitative meta-analysis method proposed by Noblit & Hare (1988). Results: First, teachers showed a primary interest in specific characteristics of children with severe and multiple disabilities, such as health issues, play, and communication-related traits. They aimed to integrate child-centered educational strategies with teacher-led approaches. Second, teachers considered collaboration with hospitals, schools, fellow teachers, and various experts to be crucial. They also emphasized the importance of ongoing and proactive communication with parents in the educational setting. Third, teachers faced challenges in the physical and psychological aspects of educating these children, as well as in the pedagogical approaches. Specifically, they recognized the limitations of play-centered education and the difficulties in setting and executing individualized educational goals. Conclusion: This significance of this study lies in its investigation of the experiences and support needs of teachers educating children with severe and multiple disabilities in Korea through qualitative meta-analysis. Through this research, we aim to promote a more accurate understanding and appropriate perception of children severe and multiple disabilities in the early chlidhood educational setting and to provide foundational data for creating an effective educational environment.

In this research, we measured the photoluminescence (PL) and the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) of porous silicon annealed at 100 $^\circ$C, 300 $^\circ$C, and 600 $^\circ$C and investigated the origin of the luminescence through analysis of the changes in the electronic band structures. The porous silicon has three electronic band structures, and each of these band structures is caused by a different luminescent origin. The first luminescent origin is the silicon compound, and the second is the quantum-confinement effect in silicon nanocrystals. The third is the quantum-confinement effect in the interface region between the silicon nanocrystals and the silicon compound.
