In this paper, we developed a system to measure the speed of a tire using a strain gauge sensor. A strain gauge sensor is attached to the inside of the tire to measure the amount of deformation while a vehicle is driving. By analyzing the deformation data, we developed an algorithm to determine the speed of a tire. The speed can be used to derive the load applied to the tire, the grip force between the tire and the road surface or slip angle. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produces speed estimation error less than 0.1%.

In this paper, we developed a vehicle load measurement system in which the deformation of a tire is measured by using strain gauge sensors and the load of a vehicle to each tire is obtained using load estimation algorithm. We estimated the load by calculating the ground area between the tire and the road surface from the tire deformation values. In order to control the autonomous vehicle safely, it is necessary to acquire the load applied to each tire in real time. Typically, the slip angle and grip force between the tire and the road surface are derived by a standardized formula calculation. However, this can vary depending on the weight of the vehicle and the condition of the road surface. Experiment results show that the proposed load estimation algorithm produces error within 5%.
