본 논문은 《어언자이집(語言自邇集)》제2판의 서문을 번역하고, 그 속에서 논의되고 언급된 관련된 내용에 대해 기술, 정리한 것이다. 본고는 1886년도에 나온 제2판을 저본으로 한다. 《어언자이집》은 토머스 웨이드(Thomas Francis Wade, 1818-1895)가 1867년 중국에 근무하는 영국인을 대상으로 중국어의 구어(口語)와 문어(文語) 교육을 목적으로 출간한 교재로 중국어 본문과 영어 설명으로 구성되어있다. 이 책은 당시 중국어 학습에 있어서 가장 발달한 교재로 평가받으며, 그 속에 쓰인 표기법 등은 이후 웨이드-자일스(Wade-Giles) 표기법으로 발전, 현재 서양에서의 중국어 표기 등의 기준으로 쓰이고 있으며, 근대 중국어 연구에도 중요한 가치가 있는 문헌이다. 본고는 《어언자이집》제2판 서문(序文)에 담겨진 저자의 편찬 의도, 과정, 관련 배경 등에 대해 기술하고, 서문의 전문을 번역하였다. 《어언자이집》이 지니는 학술적 가치와 기존에 서문 전문이 한국어로 번역된 적이 없었던 바에 비추어 볼 때, 본 연구는 학술적으로 매우 의미 있는 작업이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. This article translates the preface of the second edition of Yü-yen Tzŭ-êrh Chi(語言自邇集) and describes and summarizes the related contents discussed and mentioned in it. This study is based on the second edition of 1886. Yü-yen Tzŭ-êrh Chi is a textbook first published in 1867 by Thomas Francis Wade(1818-1895) for the teaching of spoken and written Chinese for British diplomats in China and consists of an English description. This book was evaluated as the most developed textbook for learning Chinese at that time. The romanization system used in this book was later developed into the Wade-Giles System, now used as a standard for Chinese notation in the West. So it has an important value for modern Chinese studies. This article describes the author"s compilation intention, process, and related background contained in the preface to the second edition of Yü-yen Tzŭ-êrh Chi, and translated the full text of the preface first in Korea. Based on the academic value of Yü-yen Tzŭ-êrh Chi and the fact that the entire preface has never been translated into Korean, this study can be regarded as a very meaningful work academically.
