Apple Pomace, a By-Product from the Asturian Cider Industry, Inhibits Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 and 2 In Vitro Replication: Study of Its Mechanisms of Action

        A ´ngel L. A ´ lvarez,Santiago Melo´n,Kevin P. Dalton,Ine´s Nicieza,Annele Roque,Bele´n Sua´rez,Francisco Parra 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.6

The anti–herpes simplex virus type 1 and anti–herpes simplex virus type 2 effects of apple pomace, a byproduct from the cider-processing industry, were investigated. The mechanisms of antiviral action were assessed using a battery of experiments targeting sequential steps in the viral replication cycle. The anti-herpetic mechanisms of apple pomaces included the inhibition of virus attachment to the cell surface and the arrest of virus entry and uncoating. Quercitrin and procyanidin B2 were found to play a crucial role in the antiviral activity.

Transcriptional profile of processing machinery of 30 end of mRNA in Trichomonas vaginalis

        Miguel A ´ ngel Del-Moral-Stevenel,Alma Villalobos-Osnaya,Mavil Lo´pez-Casamichana,Laura Itzel Quintas-Granados,Ce´sar Lo´pez-Camarillo,Jose´ Manuel Ferna´ndez Sa´nchez,Selene Zarate-Guerra,Marı´a Eli 한국유전학회 2015 Genes & Genomics Vol.37 No.4

Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of trichomonosis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that affects over 180 million people worldwide. This parasite is capable to infect the urogenital tract of women and men, both microenvironments might affect the expression of key genes that may be involved in the parasite pathogenesis. The processing of 30 end of mRNA promotes mRNA stability in many eukaryotes, however in T. vaginalis this molecular machinery is under research. By means of an in silico analysis we identified putative proteins of the 30 end mRNA processing machinery of T. vaginalis, and by RTPCR assays we evaluated the expression of eight of these genes in a female and male T. vaginalis isolates. According to the in silico analysis, the T. vaginalis 30 end mRNA processing machinery, comprises a similar complex and protein factors that those described in Homo sapiens, Arabidopsis thaliana, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Entamoeba histolytica. The complex contains several subcomplexes, including cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF), cleavage stimulation factor (CstF), cleavage factor I (CFIm) and cleavage factor II (CFIIm). We demonstrated that genes tvpsf2p, tvcfi25, tvcpsf160, tvcpsf73, tvfip1, tvpap1, tvpc4 and tvpabp are expressed in male or female T. vaginalis isolates. Besides we identify two different isoforms of TvPC4. T. vaginalis genome contains most of genes encoding for 30 end mRNA processing, which may be transcriptionally active and could be involved in the capping, splicing, cleavage and polyadenylation of mRNAs in this parasite. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the biological meaning of our findings.

A review on anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) focused on modelling and control aspects

        Robles, Á,ngel,Ruano, Maria Victoria,Charfi, Amine,Lesage, Geoffroy,Heran, Marc,Harmand, Jé,,me,Seco, Aurora,Steyer, Jean-Philippe,Batstone, Damien J.,Kim, Jeonghwan,Ferrer, Jos&eac Elsevier 2018 Bioresource technology Vol.270 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The use of anaerobic membrane bioreactor technology (AnMBR) is rapidly expanding. However, depending on the application, AnMBR design and operation is not fully mature, and needs further research to optimize process efficiency and enhance applicability. This paper reviews state-of-the-art of AnMBR focusing on modelling and control aspects. Quantitative environmental and economic evaluation has demonstrated substantial advantages in application of AnMBR to domestic wastewater treatment, but detailed modelling is less mature. While anaerobic process modelling is generally mature, more work is needed on integrated models which include coupling between membrane performance (including fouling) and the biological process. This should include microbial factors, which are important to generation of specific foulants such as soluble and particulate inert organics. Mature and well-established control tools, including better feedback control strategies are also required for both the process, and for fouling control.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> AnMBR needs further research to optimize process efficiency. </LI> <LI> Modelling can provide insight into the factors playing a key role in AnMBR. </LI> <LI> Process models still face a long path to adaptation in practice. </LI> <LI> Better understanding of fouling mechanisms in AnMBRs is required. </LI> <LI> Control strategies can be further optimized from mechanistic knowledge of fouling. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Quality of Life and Psychological Well-Being in Obesity Management

Miguel Á,ngel Rojo Tirado 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2017 계명간호과학 Vol.20 No.3

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the Quality of Life and Psychological Well-Being in Obesity Management. Methods: Literature on psychological and behavioral issues in obesity treatment was explored. Results: Obesity is rapidly becoming one of the most important health concerns in developed countries worldwide. The increasing prevalence of obesity places significant burdens on individuals and healthcare systems. In addition to its clear clinical effects, obesity carries a substantial burden in personal terms, as measured by reduced daily functioning, and by general, health-related and obesity-specific quality-of- life (QoL) metrics. QoL has been defined as the effect of medical conditions on well being and physical and mental function, reflecting the functional effects of a disease as perceived by the patient. Hence, individuals living with obesity are subject to considerable stigma, which they may internalize and experience as shame, depression and anxiety. The negative impact of obesity on the four main domains of QOL(physical health, mental health, social functioning, and vocational functioning) largely outweighs physical symptoms and its associated co-morbidities, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Obesity per se is a cause of discrimination in several areas of social life. Psychological disturbances, frequently observed in obese people, are likely to further impair the perceived health status. Conclusion: A quantitative measurement of QOL (including the physical and mental dimensions) is critical in defining strategies to improve patients’ reported outcomes.

      • Guaranteed GNSS-based Road Charging Applications through User-Level Integrity

        Audrey Mark,Joaquí,n Cosmen Schortmann,Miguel Á,ngel Martí,nez Olagü,e,Miguel Romay Merino 한국항해항만학회 2006 한국항해항만학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2 No.-

Integrity plays a fundamental role in the feasibility of “liability critical” applications. Road charging, e.g. road tolling in urban zones or on highways, represents a series of liability critical applications where a guarantee in integrity could be a true enabler: being the mechanism that prevents the incorrect charging of users and enabling the advancement of these applications using GNSS such as Galileo and EGNOS that provide integrity mechanisms. However, the integrity of the end user position is not guaranteed by the EGNOS and Galileo integrity services alone as provided. Algorithms have been developed to supply a guarantee on the performance attainable at the user level through the provision of a horizontal protection level that responds to local user conditions such as multipath or interference. In addition, an application has been developed that implements road charging mechanisms based on the availability of user-level integrity. Results obtained show that the user-level integrity algorithms provided the required level of integrity guarantee and granularity of the horizontal protection levels necessary for executing urban and rural (highway) road charging. In addition, the road charging application developed shows that the current application domain requirements can be met through the provision of guaranteed integrity and that further reductions in the horizontal protection levels along with increased signal availability will enable future road charging modalities.

Effect of Tetracalcium Dimagnesium Phytate on Bone Characteristics in Ovariectomized Rats

        Fe´lix Grases,Pilar Sanchis,Rafael M. Prieto,Joan Perello,ngel A. Lo´pez-Gonza´lez 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.6

The aim was to evaluate the influence of dietary Ca-Mg-phytate consumption on the bone characteristics of ovariectomized rats, an animal model for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Twenty ovariectomized female Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups fed, respectively, with a non-phytate diet (AIN-76A) or the same diet enriched with 1%phytate (as the calcium magnesium salt, phytin). After 12 weeks of feeding the rats were sacrificed, and both femoral bones and L4 vertebra were removed from each rat. Bone mass, length, width, volume, and mineral density were measured, and the phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and zinc contents of bones were determined. Deoxypyridinoline (a bone resorption marker)was measured in urine, and osteocalcin (a bone formation marker) was measured in serum. The calcium and phosphorus contents and bone mineral density were significantly higher in both femoral bones and L4 vertebra for phytate-treated rats in comparison to rats in the non-phytate group. Deoxypyridinoline was significantly increased in rats in the non-phytate treatment group. Ca-Mg-phytate consumption reduces bone mineral density loss due to estrogen deficiency. Thus, phytate exhibits effects similar to those of bisphosphonates on bone resorption and may be of use in the primary prevention of osteoporosis if larger studies in humans confirm these findings.

      • When humanoid robots become human-like interaction partners: Corepresentation of robotic actions.

        Stenzel, Anna,Chinellato, Eris,Bou, Maria A. Tirado,del Pobil, Á,ngel P.,Lappe, Markus,Liepelt, Roman American Psychological Association 2012 JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY-HUMAN PERCEPTIO Vol.38 No.5

<P>In human-human interactions, corepresenting a partner's actions is crucial to successfully adjust and coordinate actions with others. Current research suggests that action corepresentation is restricted to interactions between human agents facilitating social interaction with conspecifics. In this study, we investigated whether action corepresentation, as measured by the social Simon effect (SSE), is present when we share a task with a real humanoid robot. Further, we tested whether the believed humanness of the robot's functional principle modulates the extent to which robotic actions are corepresented. We described the robot to participants either as functioning in a biologically inspired human-like way or in a purely deterministic machine-like manner. The SSE was present in the human-like but not in the machine-like robot condition. These findings suggest that humans corepresent the actions of nonbiological robotic agents when they start to attribute human-like cognitive processes to the robot. Our findings provide novel evidence for top-down modulation effects on action corepresentation in human-robot interaction situations.</P>

      • Thermally rearranged polybenzoxazoles made from poly(<i>ortho</i>-hydroxyamide)s. Characterization and evaluation as gas separation membranes

        ,ez, Blanca,Cuadrado, Purificació,n,Marcos-Ferná,ndez, Á,ngel,de la Campa, José,G.,Tena, Alberto,Prá,danos, Pedro,Palacio, Laura,Lee, Young Moo,Alvarez, Cristina Elsevier 2018 Reactive & functional polymers Vol.127 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Two series of aromatic poly(<I>ortho</I>-hydroxyamide)s (poly(<I>o</I>-hydroxyamide)s, HPAs) were prepared by reaction of two diamines, 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (APA) and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (APAF), with four aromatic diacid chlorides; terephthaloyl dichloride (TPC), isophthaloyl dichloride (IPC), 2,2-bis[4-chlorocarbonylphenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FC) and 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoyl dichloride (DBSC). Amorphous HPAs with high molecular weights (inherent viscosities higher than 0.5 dL/g) and relatively high glass transition temperatures (220–280 °C) were obtained. Dense membranes of HPAs were able to undergo a thermal rearrangement (TR) process to polybenzoxazoles (β-TR-PBOs) heating at moderate temperatures (between 250 and 375 °C), and their complete conversion was reached at a temperature below 375 °C, depending on the <I>o</I>-hydroxy diamine moiety, APA and APAF. The β-TR-PBOs films derived from APAF showed a higher thermal stability and higher Tg than those from APA. Gas separation properties of TR-PBOs membranes were superior to those of their poly(<I>o</I>-hydroxyamide) precursors, particularly for the following gas pairs: O2/N2, CO2/CH4, He/CH4 and He/CO2.</P>

      • A review of recent advances in the spherical harmonics expansion method for semiconductor device simulation

        Rupp, K.,Jungemann, C.,Hong, S.-M.,Bina, M.,Grasser, T.,,ngel, A. Springer US 2016 Journal of Computational Electronics Vol.15 No.3

<P>The Boltzmann transport equation is commonly considered to be the best semi-classical description of carrier transport in semiconductors, providing precise information about the distribution of carriers with respect to time (one dimension), location (three dimensions), and momentum (three dimensions). However, numerical solutions for the seven-dimensional carrier distribution functions are very demanding. The most common solution approach is the stochastic Monte Carlo method, because the gigabytes of memory requirements of deterministic direct solution approaches has not been available until recently. As a remedy, the higher accuracy provided by solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation is often exchanged for lower computational expense by using simpler models based on macroscopic quantities such as carrier density and mean carrier velocity. Recent developments for the deterministic spherical harmonics expansion method have reduced the computational cost for solving the Boltzmann transport equation, enabling the computation of carrier distribution functions even for spatially three-dimensional device simulations within minutes to hours. We summarize recent progress for the spherical harmonics expansion method and show that small currents, reasonable execution times, and rare events such as low-frequency noise, which are all hard or even impossible to simulate with the established Monte Carlo method, can be handled in a straight-forward manner. The applicability of the method for important practical applications is demonstrated for noise simulation, small-signal analysis, hot-carrier degradation, and avalanche breakdown.</P>
