The paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor (PILR) family consists of two functionally opposite members, inhibitory PILR and activating PILR receptors. PILRs are widely expressed in various immune cells and inter-act with their ligands, especially CD99 expressed on activated T cells, to participate in immune responses. Here we investigated whether PILR-derived agonists inhibit 1 integrin activity as ligands for CD99. PILR-derived peptides as well as PILR-Fc fusion proteins prevented cell adhesion to fibronectin through the regu-lation of 1 integrin activity. Especially, PILRpep3, a representative 3-mer peptide covering the conserved motifs of the PILR extracellular domain, prevented the clustering and activation of 1 integrin by dephosphory-lating FAK and vinculin, which are major components of focal adhesion. In addition, PILRpep3 inhibited transen-dothelial migration of monocytes as well as endothelial cell tube formation. Furthermore, upon intraperitoneal injection of PILRpep3 into mice with collagen-induced arthritis, the inflammatory response of rheumatoid arthritis was strongly suppressed. Taken together, these results suggest that PILR-derived agonist ligands may prevent the inflammatory reactions of rheumatoid arthri-tis by activating CD99.

Background/Aims: This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and behaviors of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) during the early coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the major epidemic area in Korea. Methods: Between April and May 2020, a cross-sectional survey was performed at two tertiary hospitals in Daegu, South Korea, on patients’ experiences, coping strategies and perceptions. Results: Most of the 544 patients participating in the survey strictly adhered to personal protection guidance against COVID-19. In the early COVID-19 crisis, many patients canceled or postponed hospital visits (57.5%) and rescheduled biologics administrations (26.4%). Although 13.6% utilized telemedicine, the frequency of individuals leaving their homes remained unchanged. Although 50.4% were concerned about their susceptibility to COVID-19, 72.2% adhered to their treatment for IBD. In patients taking biologics or Janus kinase inhibitors, 86.8% disagreed that they should discontinue their medication as a preventative measure against COVID-19, but 21.9% actually discontinued their medications. Of those with discordance between the perception of IBD drug adherence and active behaviors, 5.4% of all and 39.4% of biologics or Janus kinase inhibitors withheld drugs specifically due to fear of COVID-19. Only 7% of all patients discussed drug safety with their physicians. The level of concern for COVID-19 depended on the type of drug used. Conclusions: Patients with IBD showed concerns about the increased risk of COVID-19 due to IBD or their medications, and a considerable number of patients withheld their medications without consulting medical staff. Enhanced active communications with patients with IBD and appropriate health-related education should be provided. (Gut Liver 2022;16:81-91)

This study intended to investigate environmental factors including soil and vegetation in order to understand the environmental and ecological characteristics of 4 different habitats of Acanthopanax senticosus. These habitats, according to investigations, are mostly located at elevation of 674 m to 1,242 m with angles of inclination ranging from 3 degree to 36 degrees. A total of 81 vascular plants are identified in 5 quadrates of 4 habitats. The importance value of Acanthopanax senticosus is 22.9%, and 5 highly ranked species such as Deutzia uniflora (18.1%), Deutzia glabrata (10.3%), Syringa patula var. kamibaysii (6.7%), Weigela subsessilis (5.6%) and Euonymus macropterus (5.1%) are considered to be an affinity with Acanthopanax senticosus in their habitats. The dominance species of the four habitats are represented as Comus controversa (33.8%) in the tree layer (T1), and Actinidia arguta (17.1%), Acer tegmentosum (13.8%) in the subtree layer (T2), and Astilboides tabularis (21.4%), Dryopteris crassirhizoma (11.0%) and Polystichum tripteron (6.7%) in the herbaceous layer (H). The degree of their average species diversity is 1.25, and that of dominance and evenness are 0.08 and 0.89, respectively. The average field capacity of soil is 32.1 %, soil pH is 5.98, and organic matter is 18.21%. Correlation coefficients analysis based on environmental factors shows that the negative correlated in coverage of Acanthopanax senticoslls-coverage of tree and subtree layer.

Distributional characteristics of vascular plants and plants selection for revegetation in bare ground of lakeside was investigated in nine artificial lakes. The vascular plants were composed of 64 families, 194 genera, 268 species, 3 subspecies, 30 varieties, 3 forma, totaling 304 taxa. Dominant species of nine investigated areas were represented as Ambrosia trifida, Calystegia hederacea, Matricaria matricariodes, Xanthium italicum. Dominant species of three parts based on the location of artificial lakes were as follows: Ambrosia trifida, Bidens tripartita, Calystegia hederacea, Equisetum arvense, Setaria viridis, Spergula arvensis, Torilis japonica in northern part (Lake Paro and Soyang); Calystegia hederacea, Matricaria matricariodes, Rumex crispus, Xanthium italicum in middle part (Lake Chungju, Daecheong, Andong and Imha); and Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Bidens frondosa, Chenopodium glaucum, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Persicaria pubescens, Setaria viridis in southern part(Lake Juam, Hapcheon and Jinyang). Among the 304 taxa, Korean endemic, endangered and rare plants were not investigated. The naturalized plants were 46 taxa, and life form was Th-R5-D4-e type. Above the results, Calystegia hederacea, Equisetum arvense, Xanthium italicum, Matricaria matricariodes, and Spergula arvensis were considered with proper species for revegetation in bare ground of lakeside in artificial lakes.

According to recent global warming, the number of wild birds is growing. Moreover, the birds are using the transmission tower as a resting place due to the destruction of bird habitats by rapid development and urbanization. Therefore, transmission outages are increasing rapidly, but the methodical study and solutions to this problem are not sufficient. In this study, we will analyze power failure, a bird managemet map and innovative prevention of breakdown in transmission lines.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture treatment in patients with lumbago and skelalgia. Methods: This clinical study included 45 patients who were treated for lumbago and skelalgia at the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Dong-Eui University College of Oriental Medicine, from July 5, 2011, to January 31, 2012. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: Chukyu (spine-healing)-pharmacopuncture-treated group (experimental group, n = 23) and normal saline-pharmacopuncture-treated group (control group, n = 22). Patients in the experimental group were treated with acupuncture and Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture while those in the control group were treated with acupuncture and normal saline pharmacopuncture. To estimate the efficacy of controlling pain, we checked the visual analog scale [VAS], and to estimate the improvement of the symptoms, we evaluated by pain rating scale [PRS] and the Oswestry low-back pain disability index [ODI]. Results: A comparison of the experimental and the control groups showed more significant improvements in the VAS, PRS, and ODI for the experimental group than for the control group. Conclusions: Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture can be used for effective treatment in patients with lumbago and skelalgia.

Case Description: We experienced a case of metachronous four primary malignancies. The patient was 76-year-old man with mild wall thickening of GB (gall bladder) fundus and he had laparoscopic cholecystectomy and it revealed adenocarcinoma with invasion of lamina propria of GB. On Regular follow up of abdominal CT (computerized tomography) after 7 months of his cholecystectomy, his prostate was enlarged and hypervascular and the PSA (prostate specifi c antigen) level was high up to 119.9 ng/dL. He had hormonal therapy with goserelin acetate and leuprorelin acetate. 3 years after the diagnosis of his prostate cancer, multiple colon polyps were noticed at his colonoscopy for screening of outside clinic. He came to our hospital and had polypectomy. One of them on his sigmoid colon included focal intramucosal carcinoma, and others were tubular adenoma with low grade dysplasia. He got esophagogastroduodenoscopy and ulcerofungated mass was seen on greater curvature of distal antrum, which is suggesting malignancy. Biopsy showed some atypical glands, and distal gastrectomy was done. It was early gastric cancer of moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with submucosal invasion and no involvement of lymph node and another organ (stage IA). He underwent no adjuvant therapy and is has been on regular follow up till this time.
