The paper purports to examine the implications of a free education policy and trade liberalization on the child and adult labour markets in the set-up of a Harris-Todaro type general equilibrium model. It has been found that a hike in the education subsidy or an inflow of foreign capital may produce counterproductive results on the supply of child labour in the urban area. Moreover, these policies may raise the level of urban unemployment of adult labour even when two types of labour are not substitutes to each other. The average income of the urban poor families may also decrease as a consequence.

In a production structure reasonable for a developing economy this note shows that there may arise a conflict between the worldwide liberalized trade policies in agriculture, which raise the price of the economy`s primary exportable commodity, and the inflow of foreign capital into the economy. However, if the economy strictly adheres to the different facets of the agricultural trade liberalization policies, e.g. the removal of the indirect farm subsidies, the paper argues that the possible conflict may be avoided. The paper provides a theoretical basis for the removal of the farm subsidies if the economy wants to develop its technologically more advanced sectors with an adequate supply of foreign capital.
Pollution and Informal Sector: A Theoretical Analysis
( Sarbajit Chaudhuri ),( Ujjaini Mukhopadhyay ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2006 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.21 No.2
We present a three-sector general equilibrium model with an informal sector, which produces an intermediate input for the formal sector, to analyze the effects of different policies on the environmental standard of the economy. The formal sector is made to pay a pollution emission tax for any pollution level higher than the permissible level that is determined by the regulatory authority. Since the informal manufacturing sector creates pollution, increase in the use of informal sector output in the formal sector raises the level of pollution and widens the discrepancy between actual and permissible levels of pollution, so that the emission tax payable by the formal sector also increases. The efficiency of a representative worker is inversely related to the level of pollution. In this framework, we show that even if the permissible level of pollution is reduced, the polluting informal sector may expand and worsen the environmental standard. On the other hand, an inflow of foreign capital may reduce the pollution level. These results are new in the literature of trade and environment.

The paper shows that in a reasonable production structure for a developing economy a brain drain of skilled labour may raise the welfare of the economy while an emigration of unskilled labour is welfare reducing. Also an emigration of skilled/unskilled labour lowers the urban unemployment of unskilled labour and widens the skilled-unskilled wage-gap. The paper provides an alternative explanation for the increasing wage inequality in many less developed countries in the regime of liberalized trade and investment in terms of higher international mobility of skilled and unskilled labour during this period using a Harris-Todaro (1970) framework where the central principle of the Stolper-Samuelson theorem holds.

Endogenous Skill Formation: Labor Market Integration by an Immigration
( Titas Kumar Bandopadhyay ),( Sarbajit Chaudhuri ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소(구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2013 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.28 No.1
The paper fabricates endogenous skill formation in a two-sector general equilibrium model where the unemployment of the skilled workers is caused by efficiency wage. The paper also examines the effects of the immigration of unskilled labor, the emigration of skilled labor, and the inflow of foreign capital on unemployment, skilled-unskilled wage inequality, and the level of skill formation in each unskilled working family. We find that the immigration of unskilled labor raises both the rate and level of unemployment of the skilled labor and lowers both the relative skilled-unskilled wage inequality and the level of skill formation in each unskilled working family under certain conditions. However, the emigration of skilled labor or the inflow of foreign capital gives opposite results
