CONTROL OF BLISTER RUST OF TAIWAN RED PINE IN TAIWAN

        Peng,Lin Feng,Chung Yi Tsai,Zuei Ching Chen 한국산림과학회 1985 한국산림과학회지 Vol.71 No.1

In 1966, the outbreak of a rust disease was discovered from the young plantation of Taiwan red pine (Pines taiwanensis Hay.) at the northeastern part of Taiwan Island. The plantation of about 2,000㏊ planted with 3-4 years old saplings is located on the mountain slopes of a valley of the upper stream of Ta-Chia River. The rust disease was first discovered sporadically from the narrow margin of plantation surrounding the pine nursery which was located at the center of valley. The disease spread rapidly and the total infected area in 1968 had been recorded for 186 ha. The rust fungus was first identified as Cronartium ribicola J.C. Fischer. The alternative hosts of this rust fungus, Ribes spp. were not recovered from the area of infectian sites nor from the area of 20Km radius from the infected site. Instead of Ribes host, Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. were planted in the nursery near by the pine nursery from 1966. It was thus identified the rust fungus as Cronartium flaccidum (Alb. et Schw.) Wint. The extensive control measures were practiced from 1968 and the eradication of infected saplings, shrubs and weeds of forest floors was given the first priority. In total, 111,852 trees infected were felled down from 1966 to 1971. All infected branches or parts of the trees were first wrapped with the vinyl film to prevent the dispersion of rust spores and then trees were felled down and finally were burnt at the site. Rest of pine trees of the whole plantation were sprayed with the fungicides; 0.2% Dithane Z-78 or 4-4 Bordeux mixture with addition of 1% Uspulun. Spraying of fungicides was carried out at least twice a month and continued to 1971. In 1973 and 1974, reforestation by some resistance tree species such as Pines armandi Fr., Taiwania, Cryptomeria, or Chamaecyparis, etc, were practiced. In total, 148,500 seedlings of tree species mentioned above were replaced the infected pine trees. Since the first outbreak of the disease in 1966, 20 years have been passed without any new outbreak of the rust disease by C. flaccidum in the same site or any other plantations in Taiwan. The control of the rust disease erupted in Taiwan red pine plantation in 1966 in thus concluded as very successful.

The 8th Biennial Meeting of the Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology, December 1st to 3rd, 2023

        Heng-Cheng Hsu,김재원,박정열,서동훈,김세익,Jen-Ruei Chen,Peng-Hui Wang 대한부인종양학회 2024 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.35 No.2

As per the 2018 GLOBOCAN database, Asia accounted for 48.7% (637,761) of new gynecologiccancer cases and 50.1% (305,000) of gynecologic cancer deaths [1]. Recognizing the distinctdifferences in genetic background, cancer epidemiology, disease characteristics, and socio-cultural environment between Asian and non-Asian women, it is noteworthy that much ofthe experimental evidence guiding clinical gynecologic oncology practices has historicallybeen drawn from studies in Western populations. Established in 2008, the Asian Society ofGynecologic Oncology (ASGO) ser ves as a key organization in Asia, dedicated to advancingthe study, prevention, and treatment of gynecological cancer through scientific exchange,regional/international collaboration, educational initiatives, and fostering camaraderieamong its members [2]. Presently, ASGO boasts members from over 10 countries in Asia. Building on the success of the previous meetings held in Tokyo (2009) [3], Seoul (2011)[4], Kyoto (2013) [5], Seoul (2015) [6], Tokyo (2017) [7], Incheon (2019) [8], and Bangkok(2021) [9], the eighth Biennial Meeting of ASGO took place at the state-of-the-art HNBKInternational Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan, from December 01 to 03, 2023. Theoverarching theme for this event was “Reunion to Overcome Gynecologic Cancer in Asia.”Notably, due to the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in 2021, the meetingwas transformed into a hybrid format. This gathering marked a significant milestone as thefirst in-person Pan-Asia meeting focused on gynecological cancer following the pandemic. Additionally, it is worth highlighting that this was the inaugural ASGO meeting held outsideof Korea and Japan, underscoring the broadening geographical scope and global impactof the conference. Professor Peng-Hui Wang and Jae-Weon Jim chaired the organizingcommittee. ASGO 2023 witnessed the participation of 633 attendees from 17 countries, featuring 152 honored speakers and chairs from 12 countries. The event included 44 oral/surgical video presentations and 187 poster presentations, covering a diverse range ofscientific topics, from fundamental principles of gynecological cancer care to advanced, high-technology practices rooted in cutting-edge research (Table 1). Breviscapine Ameliorates Fear Extinction and Anxiety in BALB/cJ Mice

        Wei Liang(Wei Liang),Jing Huang(Jing Huang),Shuya Yang(Shuya Yang),Peng Huang(Peng Huang),Jun Chen(Jun Chen),Chen Chen(Chen Chen),Qun Yang(Qun Yang),Fengzhan Li(Fengzhan Li) 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.3

Objective In this research, the influence of breviscapine on anxiety, fear elimination, and aggression and the potential mechanism was investigated. Methods Anxiety and locomotion were analyzed by elevated plus maze and open field test in mice. Bussey-Saksida Mouse Touch Screen Chambers were used to perform fear conditioning. Territorial aggression was assessed by resident intruder test. Protein levels were evaluated by Western blot. Breviscapine improved fear-extinction learning in BALB/cJ mice. Results Breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased center cross number, total distance traveled, and velocity in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg decreased the immobility time in open field test. In addition, breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased the ratio of time on the open arm, time on the distal parts of the open arm, and total distance traveled in elevated plus maze. Breviscapine at 100 mg/kg increased the average attack latency and decreased the number of attacks over the last 3 days of resident intruder test. In hippocampus, protein levels of postsynaptic density protein-95 and synaptophysin were elevated by breviscapine at these three doses. Conclusion The administration of breviscapine alleviates fear extinction, anxiety, and aggression, while increases locomotor in a dose-dependent manner, which might be associated with its influence on synaptic function.

      • AtHAP3b Plays a Crucial Role in the Regulation of Flowering Time in Arabidopsis during Osmotic Stress

        Chen, Nai-Zhi,Zhang, Xiu-Qing,Wei, Peng-Cheng,Chen, Qi-Jun,Ren, Fei,Chen, Jia,Wang, Xue-Chen Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.6

The HAP complex has been found in many eukaryotic organisms. HAP recognizes the CCAAT box present in the promoters of 30% of all eukaryotic genes. The HAP complex consists of three subunits - HAP2, HAP3 and HAP5. In this paper, we report the biological function of the AtHAP3b gene that encodes one of the HAP3 subunits in Arabidopsis. Compared with wild-type plants, hap3b-1 and hap3b-2 mutants exhibited a delayed flowering time under long-day photoperiod conditions. Moreover, the transcription levels of FT were substantially lower in the mutants than in the wild-type plants. These results imply that AtHAP3b may function in the control of flowering time by regulating the expression of FT in Arabidopsis. In a subsequent study, AtHAP3b was found to be induced by osmotic stress. Under osmotic stress conditions, the hap3b- 1 and hap3b-2 mutants flowered considerably later than the wild-type plants. These results suggest that the AtHAP3b gene plays more important roles in the control of flowering under osmotic stress in Arabidopsis.

Dexmedetomidine promotes the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma through hepatic stellate cell activation

        Chen Peng,Luo Xiaojun,Dai Guanqi,Jiang Yuchuan,Luo Yue,Peng Shuang,Wang Hao,Xie Penghui,Qu Chen,Lin Wenyu,Hong Jian,Ning Xue,Li Aimin 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is an anesthetic that is widely used in the clinic, and it has been reported to exhibit paradoxical effects in the progression of multiple solid tumors. In this study, we sought to explore the mechanism by which DEX regulates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression underlying liver fibrosis. We determined the effects of DEX on tumor progression in an orthotopic HCC mouse model of fibrotic liver. A coculture system and a subcutaneous xenograft model involving coimplantation of mouse hepatoma cells (H22) and primary activated hepatic stellate cells (aHSCs) were used to study the effects of DEX on HCC progression. We found that in the preclinical mouse model of liver fibrosis, DEX treatment significantly shortened median survival time and promoted tumor growth, intrahepatic metastasis and pulmonary metastasis. The DEX receptor (ADRA2A) was mainly expressed in aHSCs but was barely detected in HCC cells. DEX dramatically reinforced HCC malignant behaviors in the presence of aHSCs in both the coculture system and the coimplantation mouse model, but DEX alone exerted no significant effects on the malignancy of HCC. Mechanistically, DEX induced IL-6 secretion from aHSCs and promoted HCC progression via STAT3 activation. Our findings provide evidence that the clinical application of DEX may cause undesirable side effects in HCC patients with liver fibrosis.

Male Infertility Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan

        Chen Peng-Ciao,Chen Yu-Ju,Yang Chia-Chen,Lin Ting-Ti,Huang Chien-Chu,Chung Chi-Hsiang,Sun Chien-An,Chien Wu-Chien 대한남성과학회 2022 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.40 No.3

Purpose: Some evidence suggests that male infertility increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the evidence in Asian populations is relatively scarce. The aim of this study is to determine whether male infertility increases the risk of CVDs. Materials and Methods: We used inpatient and outpatient data for the years 2000 to 2015 from the Taiwanese Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. We enrolled 7,016 males over 18 years old and diagnosed with male infertility. Of these, 2,326 matched our inclusion criteria and were assigned to the study group. For each infertility patient, four comparison patients were frequency-matched by age and index date to form a control cohort comprising 9,304 patients. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate the association between male infertility and CVDs. Results: After a 15-year follow-up, the incidence rate of CVDs was higher in the infertility group than the control group (1,460.23 and 1,073.70 per 100,000 person-years, respectively). The Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that the adjusted HR for CVDs was 1.472 for the infertility group (95% CI, 1.288–1.683; p<0.001) relative to the control group. The Kaplan–Meier analysis of the cumulative incidence of CVDs in the two groups showed that the cumulative risk curve for CVDs was significantly higher for the infertility group than the control group. Conclusions: This study shows that men with infertility have a higher risk of developing incident CVDs. In the future, healthcare providers should pay attention to these patients because of their higher health risks.

      • On the historicity of the development and evolution of the concept of globalization

        Yang Peng(Peng Yang),Chen Ziwei(Ziwei Chen) 아시아사회과학학회 2022 Jornal of Asia Social Science Vol.8 No.1

Globalization is a world-class phenomenon, and it is the cross-border and cultural spread of factors such as the production of products, the application of technology, the dissemination of information, and jobs among different countries. Globalization is a widespread phenomenon that includes economic, political, social, cultural and legal factors. From the economic point of view, globalization explains the free trade in which different countries are interdependent through various forms. From the political point of view, the evolution of globalization is developing towards the structure of intergovernmental organizations, such as the WTO and the United Nations. From the social and cultural point of view, globalization makes the interaction and cultural exchange among ethnic groups closer. Globalization also represents the exchange and collision of cultural concepts, thoughts and artistic expressions among different regions. In addition, there is a general trend of globalization towards a single world culture. From the perspective of law, globalization has adjusted the construction and implementation of international law. In the author's opinion, globalization is not a new concept in recent decades. In ancient human society a long time ago, there were merchants who traveled long distances to another country and region, taking their hometown specialties for sale, or bringing overseas specialty products back to their hometown for sale. With the development of industrial revolution, it created a great leap in the development of transportation and communication means for human society in the 19th century, and also greatly reduced the difficulty of cross-border trade. Through a brief analysis of the historical evolution of economic globalization, political globalization and social and cultural globalization, this paper shows that globalization is the result of historical development in recent centuries, rather than a fresh product in recent decades.

Utility of skull X-rays in identifying recurrence of coiled cerebral aneurysms

        Chen Peng Roc,Lopez-Rivera Victor,Conner Christopher R,Sanzgiri Aditya,Sheth Sunil A.,Erkmen Kadir,Kim Dong H,Day Arthur L. 대한뇌혈관외과학회 2021 Journal of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neuros Vol.23 No.2

Objective A high rate of cerebral aneurysm recurrence following endovascular coiling has prompted the use of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for interval follow-up. However, the utility of skull x-rays as an alternative screening method for aneurysm recurrence is unproperly characterized. Methods Retrospective review of a prospective registry of ruptured and unruptured cerebral aneurysms. Anteroposterior and lateral skull x-rays were obtained immediately at the end of the procedure and at 6-month follow-up. Aneurysm recurrence was defined by comparing post-procedure and 6-month DSA imaging. A true positive was defined as a change in coil mass morphology on at least one projection with aneurysm recurrence on DSA, and a true negative defined as a stable coil mass on both projections and no recurrence on DSA. Receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) statistics was used to assess the performance of skull x-rays in identifying aneurysm recurrence. Results A total of 118 cerebral aneurysms were evaluated with DSA imaging and skull x-rays. A change in coil mass morphology on one projection of skull x-rays correctly detected all true recurrences with a sensitivity of 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 91-100%). Skull x-rays failed to identify a stable aneurysm coil mass in 15 cases, with a specificity of 79% (68-88%). Skull x-rays performed with AUC 0.8958 (95% CI, 0.8490-0.9431) in identifying aneurysm recurrence. Conclusions The findings of our study suggest that skull x-rays may represent a low-cost, non-invasive screening tool to rule out aneurysm recurrence, which can potentially aid in decreasing the utilization of DSA in the follow-up of patients with coiled cerebral aneurysms. HEAT KERNEL ESTIMATES FOR DIRICHLET FRACTIONAL LAPLACIAN WITH GRADIENT PERTURBATION

        Chen, Peng,Song, Renming,Xie, Longjie,Xie, Yingchao Korean Mathematical Society 2019 대한수학회지 Vol.56 No.1

We give a direct proof of the sharp two-sided estimates, recently established in [4, 9], for the Dirichlet heat kernel of the fractional Laplacian with gradient perturbation in $C^{1,1}$ open sets by using Duhamel's formula. We also obtain a gradient estimate for the Dirichlet heat kernel. Our assumption on the open set is slightly weaker in that we only require D to be $C^{1,{\theta}}$ for some ${\theta}{\in}({\alpha}/2,1]$.
