        Diagnostic value of alcoholic liver disease (ALD)/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) index combined with γ-glutamyl transferase in differentiating ALD and NAFLD

        Background/Aims: This study aimed to verify the reliability of the alcoholic liver disease (ALD)/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) index (ANI) for distinguishing ALD in patients with hepatic steatosis from NAFLD, and to investigate whether ANI combined with γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) would enhance the accuracy of diagnosis in China. Methods: A hundred thirty-nine cases of fatty liver disease (FLD) were divided into two groups of ALD and NAFLD. The ANI was calculated with an online calculator. All indicators and ANI values were analyzed using statistical methods. Results: ANI was significantly higher in patients with ALD than in those with NAFLD (7.11 ± 5.77 vs. .3.09 ± 3.89, p < 0.001). With a cut-off value of .0.22, the sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of diagnosed ALD cases was 87.1%, 92.5%, and 0.934 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.879 to 0.969), respectively. The corresponding values for aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine transaminase (ALT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and GGT were 75.29%, 72.94%, and 0.826 (95% CI, 0.752 to 0.885); 94.34%, 83.02%, and 0.814 (95% CI, 0.739 to 0.875) and 80.23%, 79.25%, and 0.815 (95% CI, 0.740 to 0.876), respectively. ANI AUROC was significantly higher than the AST/ ALT, MCV, or GGT AUROCs (all p < 0.001), moreover, ANI showed better diagnostic performance. The combination of ANI and GGT showed a better AUROC than ANI alone (0.976 vs. 0.934, p = 0.016). The difference in AUROCs between AST/ALT, MCV, and GGT was not statistically significant (all p > 0.05). Conclusions: ANI can help distinguish ALD from NAFLD with high accuracy; when ANI was combined with GGT, its effectiveness improved further.

        Microwave hydrothermal synthesis and temperature sensing behavior of Lu2Ti2O7:Yb3þ/Er3þ nanophosphors

        Lu2Ti2O7:Yb3þ/Er3þ (LTO:Yb3þ/Er3þ) nanophosphors codoped with Yb3þ (8e20 at%) and Er3þ ions (0.5 e4 at%) were synthesized by a microwave hydrothermal process. Under the 980 nm excitation, the sample gives a set of upconversion light: very strong red emissions near 661 nm (4F9/2 / 4I15/2), weak green around 523 nm and 545 nm (2H11/2/4I15/2 and 4S3/2/4I15/2, respectively). The optimum doping concentrations of Er3þ and Yb3þ for the highest emission intensity were determined by photoluminescence (PL) analyses. Concentration dependent studies revealed that the optimal composition was realized for the 12 at% Yb3þ and 2.0 at% Er3þ-doping concentration with a strong emission. A possible UC mechanism for LTO:Yb3þ/Er3þ is discussed via the change of the pump power. The temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratios (FIR) for the two green UC emission bands peaked at 523 and 545 nm was studied in the range of 298e573 K under excitation by a 980 nm diode laser and the maximum sensitivity was approximately 0.00313 K『1 at 536 K. This indicates that LTO:Yb3þ/Er3þ nanophosphors are potential candidates for optical temperature sensors with high sensitivity.

      • Dual-Mode Luminescence with Broad Near UV and Blue Excitation Band from Sr<sub>2</sub>CaMoO<sub>6</sub>:Sm<sup>3+</sup> Phosphor for White LEDs

        <P>Dual-mode excitation properties were introduced in Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> doped Sr<SUB>2</SUB>CaMoO<SUB>6</SUB> prepared by a high temperature solid state reaction technique. Two ways are available to generate white light in the single-component phosphor activated by Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> ions. Warm white light can be obtained from Sr<SUB>1.995</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.005</SUB>CaMoO<SUB>6</SUB> phosphor pumped by 380 or 411 nm excitation energy. The full visible spectral emission of the single-phase phosphor comes from the high and low level emission lines of Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> ions as well as the intrinsic luminescence of MoO<SUB>6</SUB> group. It is also competitive as yellow-emitting phosphor for blue pumped white LEDs and gives three emission bands at 567, 603, and 650 nm, presenting yellow luminescence upon 466 nm radiation. The 650 nm red emission band corresponding to <SUP>4</SUP>G<SUB>5/2</SUB> → <SUP>6</SUP>H<SUB>9/2</SUB> transition of Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> can make its color rendering index better. The excellent photoluminescence of Sr<SUB>2</SUB>CaMoO<SUB>6</SUB> is related to the partial tilting CaO<SUB>6</SUB> octahedral and the lowered symmetry were confirmed by General Structure Analysis System. Band gap of Sr<SUB>2</SUB>CaMoO<SUB>6</SUB> estimated from the diffuse reflection spectra and also calculated by CASTEP mode shows its semiconducting character. All the results show that the Sr<SUB>2–<I>x</I></SUB>Sm<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>CaMoO<SUB>6</SUB> phosphors have considerable potential for applications in near UV LED or pumped by blue LED chip.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2015/jpccck.2015.119.issue-27/acs.jpcc.5b02828/production/images/medium/jp-2015-02828d_0011.gif'></P>

        Synthesis and photoluminescence of Bi<sup>3+</sup>,Eu<sup>3+</sup> doped CdWO<sub>4</sub> phosphors: application of energy level rules of Bi<sup>3+</sup> ions

        <P>Bi3+,Eu3+ doped CdWO4 phosphors have been synthesized using a co-precipitation method and regular micro-rods were obtained in Bi3+ or Eu3+ single-doped samples. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectrophotometry, and photoluminescence and decay time measurements were used to characterize the as-prepared samples. CdWO4:Bi3+ and CdWO4:Bi3+,Eu3+ can be excited ranging from 250 to 400 nm. The excitation at 350 nm was assigned to be the Bi3+ S-1(0) -> P-3(1) transition according to the energy level rules of Bi3+ ions. The origin of O-W charge transfer transition has been analyzed using the calculated band structure and density of states of CdWO4 based on density functional theory. The approach to charge compensation was two impurity ions substituting for three Cd2+ sites. Energy transfer properties from the WO6 group to Bi3+ as well as from Bi3+ to Eu3+ were discussed. The mechanism of energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+ was determined to be the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction and the critical distance of energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+ was calculated to be 15.31 angstrom. The quantum efficiency, CIE chromaticity and thermal quenching properties have also been investigated.</P>

        PVA Hydrogel Functionalization via PET-RAFT Grafting with Glycidyl Methacrylate and Immobilization with 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl Ammonium Chloride Chitosan via Ring-Open Reaction

        To solve the biofouling problem of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as the artificial cornea, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel via a new method of photoinduced electron transfer–reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization and ring-open reaction. Both attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that GMA and HACC were successfully grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel. A series of experiments to test the hydrophilicity of PVA hydrogel showed that it became hydrophobic due to the introduction of hydrophobic groups after grafting with GMA and HACC. In addition, cytotoxicity in vitro of PVA-g-p(GMA-HACC) hydrogel could be considered as not cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5: 2009. The anti-fouling property of hydrogel decreased after grafting with GMA due to the hydrophobic surface, while increased after grafting with HACC due to the steric repulsion of p(GMA-HACC) polymer brush. It’s no doubt that PET-RAFT was a feasible and reliable surface modification method which could be used in many biomolecules due to the excellent advantages.

        Circular RNA PIP5K1A promotes glycolysis and malignancy of non-small cell lung cancer via miR-656-3p/GBE1 axis under hypoxia

        Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a common malignant tumor with a poor 5-year survival rate. Hypoxia is a common phenomenon that occurs in solid tumors, especially after tumor growth. Circular RNA (circRNA) is aberrantly expressed in NSCLC cells under hypoxia. However, the underlying mechanism of biological function has remained unclear. Objective The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying mechanism of the biological function of Circular RNA PIP5K1A in non-small cell lung cancer. Results The levels of circ-PIP5K1A and 1, 4-alpha-glucan branching enzyme 1 GBE1 (GBE1) were upregulated in NSCLC tissues and NSCLC cells under hypoxia, whereas miR-656-3p was downregulated. Knockdown of circ-PIP5K1A or GBE1 inhibited cell glycolysis, proliferation, and motility while promoting cell apoptosis under hypoxia. Besides, miR-656-3p was a direct target of circ-PIP5K1A, and miR-656-3p could specially bind to GBE1. Moreover, circ-PIP5K1A sponged miR-656-3p to upregulate GBE1 expression. In addition, GBE1 overexpression reversed the inhibitory effect of circ-PIP5K1A knockdown on NSCLC cell malignant phenotype under hypoxia. Conclusion Circ-PIP5K1A could be a tumor promoter in NSCLC and regulated NSCLC cell malignant phenotype under hypoxia through miR-656-3p/GBE1 axis.         Robust Consensus for Networked Mechanical Systems with Coupling Time Delay

        This paper studies the state consensus for a class of networked nonlinear mechanical systems with coupling time delay. In particular, robust consensus protocols for both deterministic and uncertain systems with time delay are investigated. For deterministic systems, we develop a P-like protocol which allows for variable coupling time delay. We show that it is sufficient to have only the relative position information together with a damping control term, whereas the relative velocity information is not needed for state consensus. Then, an adaptive robust control protocol is proposed for uncertain sys-tems with unknown parameters in the system dynamics and arbitrary constant coupling time delays. By introducing the passivity-based framework, we demonstrate that state consensus is still reachable in this case. Finally, a numerical example is included to illustrate the obtained results.

        Two New Bithiophenes Derivatives Multielectrochromic Copolymer Based on Triphenylamine Unit and Their Application for Electrochromic Devices

        Two monomers including 4,4′,4″-tris(3-methoxythiophene-2-yl)triphenylamine (M1) and 4,4′,4″-tris(3,4-dimethoxythiophene-2-yl)triphenylamine (M2) with triphenylamine as their core were synthesized and the corresponding polymers were obtained by electrochemical polymerization. Their electrochemical properties were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, UV–Vis, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the two polymers had reversible redox behavior with the different color change under the applied potentials. Both the polymers displayed high switching efficiency and optical contrast. Moreover, the corresponding electrochromic devices (ECDs) employing the synthesized polymers and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) were constructed. The spectroelectrochemical experiments illustrated that the ECDs exhibited fast response time, reasonable optical contrast, favorable optical memories, and redox stability.
