In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction was performed to extract ascorbic acid from rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa Thunb.) fruit. The optimal conditions were investigated by response surface methodology, using two variable including reaction time (16-44 min) and temperature (16-44°C). The ascorbic acid extraction was sensitive to the reaction time rather than the reaction temperature, and the optimal conditions for ascorbic acid extraction were 25°C and 30 min. Ascorbic acid and gallic acid in the rugosa rose fruit extract were completely separated by HPLC, with a resolution factor of over 1.5 between the two. The correlation coefficient of the ascorbic acid was 0.999 in a linearity test for 50-150 μg/mL concentration of extract. The limit of detection and limit of quantification values were 0.16 μg/mL and 29.89 μg/mL, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for repeatability and reproducibility were determined, and each RSD showed good precision at less than 5% (N=6).

Background: This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics of patients with major depressive disorder who were rehospitalized within 1 year and to determine whether the 1-year rehospitalization rate varied depending on the type of medication and treatment method. Methods: Clinical characteristics of 531 patients hospitalized for major depressive disorder were assessed. The use and type of antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and hypnotics were also evaluated. Results: Of the 531 subjects, 68 (12.8%) were rehospitalized within a year. The number of past depressive episodes (1.56±2.67 vs. 0.90±1.18) (p=0.048) and the number of previous psychiatric hospitalizations (0.82±1.93 vs. 0.29±0.83 times) (p=0.029) were high in the 1-year rehospitalization group. The rate of family history of mood disorder (25.0% vs. 13.6%) (p=0.014) and the rate of comorbid personality disorder (16.2% vs. 8.6%) (p=0.049) were also high in the 1-year rehospitalization group. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the number of previous psychiatric hospitalizations affected the rate of 1-year rehospitalization (p=0.003). Conclusion: The number of previous psychiatric hospitalizations could be used to predict rehospitalizations of patients with major depressive disorder within 1 year. In addition, family history of mood disorders and comorbidity of personality disorders may affect rehospitalization of such patients

<P>This paper comprises results of our investigation of the α-effect phenomenon for the reaction of <I>O-p</I>-nitrophenyl thionobenzoate (PNPTB) with butane-2,3-dione monoximate (Ox<SUP>–</SUP>, α-nucleophile) and <I>p</I>-chlorophenoxide (<I>p</I>-ClPhO<SUP>–</SUP>, normal-nucleophile) in DMSO–H<SUB>2</SUB>O mixtures of varying compositions at 15.0 °C, 25.0 °C, and 35.0 °C. The reactivity of Ox<SUP>–</SUP> and <I>p</I>-ClPhO<SUP>–</SUP> increases significantly as the DMSO content in the medium increases, although the effects of medium on reactivity are not the same for the reactions with Ox<SUP>–</SUP> and <I>p</I>-ClPhO<SUP>–</SUP>. Ox<SUP>–</SUP> exhibits the α-effect in all solvent compositions and temperatures. The α-effect increases up to 50 mol % DMSO and then decreases thereafter, resulting in a bell-shaped α-effect profile. Dissection of the activation parameters (i.e., Δ<I>H</I><SUP>⧧</SUP> and <I>T</I>Δ<I>S</I><SUP>⧧</SUP>) has revealed that the bell-shaped α-effect behavior is due to entropy of activation differences rather than enthalpy terms, although the enthalpy term controls almost entirely the solvent dependence of the reaction rate. Differences in the transition-state (TS) structures for the reactions with Ox<SUP>–</SUP> (a six-membered cyclic TS) and <I>p</I>-ClPhO<SUP>–</SUP> (an acyclic TS) are consistent with the entropy-dependent α-effect behavior.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/joceah/2013/joceah.2013.78.issue-17/jo401415f/production/images/medium/jo-2013-01415f_0008.gif'></P>

<P>A single-chip 32-channel analog beamformer is proposed. It achieves a delay resolution of 4 ns and a maximum delay range of 768 ns. It has a focal-point based architecture, which consists of 7 sub-analog beamformers (sub-ABF). Each sub-ABF performs a RX focusing operation for a single focal point. Seven sub-ABFs perform a time-interleaving operation to achieve the maximum delay range of 768 ns. Phase interpolators are used in sub-ABFs to generate sampling clocks with the delay resolution of 4 ns from a low frequency system clock of 5 MHz. Each sub-ABF samples 32 echo signals at different times into sampling capacitors, which work as analog memory cells. The sampled 32 echo signals of each sub-ABF are originated from one target focal point at one instance. They are summed at one instance in a sub-ABF to perform the RX focusing for the target focal point. The proposed ABF chip has been fabricated in a 0.13- μm CMOS process with an active area of 16 mm <SUP>2</SUP>. The total power consumption is 287 mW. In measurement, the digital echo signals from a commercial ultrasound medical imaging machine were applied to the fabricated chip through commercial DAC chips. Due to the speed limitation of the DAC chips, the delay resolution was relaxed to 10 ns for the real-time measurement. A linear array transducer with no steering operation is used in this work.</P>

<P>Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease that involves the deterioration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Although the etiology of PD remains poorly understood, recent genetic, postmortem, and experimental evidence shows that abnormal protein accumulation and subsequent aggregate formation are prominent features of both sporadic and familial PD. While proteasome dysfunction is observed in PD, diverse mutations in the parkin gene are linked to early-onset autosomal-recessive forms of familial PD. We demonstrate that parkin, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, activates the 26S proteasome in an E3 ligase activity-independent manner. Furthermore, an N-terminal ubiquitin-like domain within parkin is critical for the activation of the 26S proteasome through enhancing the interaction between 19S proteasomal subunits, whereas the PD-linked R42P mutant abolishes this action. The current findings point to a novel role for parkin for 26S proteasome assembly and suggest that parkin mutations contribute to the proteasomal dysfunction in PD.</P>

This study was aimed to evaluate antioxidant activities of a methanol extract from the polar microalgae Fragilariopsis pseudonana (FP) and to investigate the protective effect for gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) in WB-F344 normal rat liver epithelial cells. The results indicated that the methanol extract of FP (FPM) scavenged ABTS free radicals and inhibited copper-induced low density lipoprotein oxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Exposing HepG2 cells to $FeSO_4$ increased intracellular reactive oxygen species formation and lipid peroxides, which was significantly reduced by treatment with FPM. Furthermore, FPM increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in cells. FPM recovered the hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$)-induced inhibition of GJIC and attenuated the phosphorylation of connexin 43 (Cx43) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2). Taken together, these results demonstrated that FPM has antioxidant activity and protects against $H_2O_2$-induced inhibition of GJIC by blocking phosphorylation of Cx43 via activation of ERK1/2.
