아메바성 대장염과 연관된 Henoch-Scho¨nlein Purpura 1예

Henoch-SchonIein purpura is a common form of vasculitis primarily involving the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the joints, the kidneys, and the nervous system. The etiological investigations are essential, because triggering factors are found in approximately half the patients such as viral, bacterial and parasitic infections, drugs, toxins, systemic diseases and cancer. But it's the correlation between Henoch-SchonIein purpura and Entamoeba histolytica has been rarely reported. We report a 29-years-old woman with Henoch-SchoIein purpura complicated by the lower gastrointestinal bleeding caused by the amoebic colitis. She complained of cramping abdominal pain, lower extremity purpura and hematochezia. Cysts and trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica were detected in her stool. Skin biopsy demonstrated the leukocytoclastic vasculitis. She was administered metronidazole 1,500㎎ a day for the treatment of amebic colitis. Her hematochezia was improved, but the abdominal pain and purpura were not. The subsequent corticosteroid therapy improved her symptoms.

Our communities have been exposed to polluted air. Polluted air could cause the serious injury such as respirational impediment, disease and so on, and the air pollution could be most serious problem in our life. Unfortunately, we didn't have consider these problems seriously, and we had make no solutions for these problems. Although the concentration of indoor and outdoor didn't show the high values, VOCs existed in indoor and outdoor environment. The indoor concentration was more higher concentration than the outdoor concentration, that indicated the indoor environment was more polluted. This study showed that the investigation of a continuous environment polluted were needed.

Double-layered Al-Mg films have been deposited by using an e-beam deposition method on a cold-rolled steel sheet(CR), which the structure of the film was Al/Mg/CR. The micro-structure, alloy phase, and corrosion resistance of the Al-Mg coated CR were investigated before and after heat treatment at 400℃ for 2, 3, and 10 min in a nitrogen atmosphere. Total thickness of Al-Mg films was fixed at 3 ㎛ and the thickness ratio of Al and Mg layers(Al:Mg) has been changed from 5:1 to 1:5. The cross-sectional morphology of the films, which had the thickness ratio of 2:1(Al:Mg), 1:1, and 1:2, was changed after heat treatment from columnar to featureless structure. The x-ray diffraction data for as-deposited films showed only pure Al and Mg peaks. Al-Mg alloy peaks such as Al₃Mg₂ and Al12Mg17 phase appeared after the heat treatment. The Al-Mg coating with the thickness ratio of 1:1(Al:Mg) showed the best corrosion resistance of up to 500 hours by salt spray test.

Hydroquinone Exhibits In Vitro and In Vivo Anti-Cancer Activity in Cancer Cells and Mice

<P>Hydroquinone (HQ, 1,4-benzenediol) is a hydroxylated benzene metabolite with various biological activities, including anti-oxidative, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory functions. However, the anti-cancer activity of HQ is not well understood. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity of HQ was investigated in various cancer cells and tumor-bearing mouse models. HQ significantly induced the death of A431, SYF, B16F10, and MDA-MB-231 cells and also showed a synergistic effect on A431 cell death with other anti-cancer agents, such as adenosine-2′,3′-dialdehyde and buthionine sulfoximine. In addition, HQ suppressed angiogenesis in fertilized chicken embryos. Moreover, HQ prevented lung metastasis of melanoma cells in mice in a dose-dependent manner without toxicity and adverse effects. HQ (10 mg/kg) also suppressed the generation of colon and reduced the thickness of colon tissues in azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate-injected mice. This study strongly suggests that HQ possesses in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity and provides evidence that HQ could be developed as an effective and safe anti-cancer drug.</P>
Operating Pressure Conditions for Non-Explosion Hazards in Plants Handling Propane Gas

Hazardous area classification is designed to prevent chemical plant explosions in advance. Generally, the duration of the explosive atmosphere is used for zone type classification. Herein, IEC code, a quantitative zone type classification methodology, was used to achieve Zone 2 NE, which indicates a practical non-explosion condition. This study analyzed the operating pressure of a vessel handling propane to achieve Zone 2 NE by applying the IEC code via MATLAB. The resulting zone type and hazardous area grades were compared with the results from other design standards, namely API and EI codes. According to the IEC code, the operating pressure of vessels handling propane should be between 101325-116560.59 Pa. In contrast, the zone type classification criteria used by API and EI codes are abstract. Therefore, since these codes could interpret excessively explosive atmospheres, care is required while using them for hazardous area classification design.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>New biomarkers are essential for improving the prediction of the survival and prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is the most widely used biomarker, but the low sensitivity and specificity limit its clinical applications. The diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of osteopontin (OPN), dickkopf-related protein 1 (DKK1), and a combination of these biomarkers are being studied.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>From January 2006 to December 2008, patients undergoing hepatectomy for HCC were screened and their serum stored in tumor banks was analyzed. The serum was used to investigate OPN and DKK1 levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). In the paraffin block, the status of OPN and DKK1 positivity was assessed using immunohistochemistry(IHC).</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>A total of 60 patients were enrolled. The optimal cut-off level for survival was identified as 3.0 ng/mL and 5.2 ng/mL of OPN and DKK1, respectively. In multivariate analysis, a high OPN level was the only significant prognostic factor for overall survival [hazard ratio3.79, p = .017]. Considering a combination of AFP (cut-off level, 200 ng/mL) and OPN/DKK1, the patients with high AFP and OPN/DKK1 levels showed significantly lower overall survivals than those with low AFP, high AFP, and low OPN/DKK1 levels (p = .0091 for the AFP and OPN group, p = .0344 for the AFP and DKK1 group). Comparison between IHC and ELISA results for OPN and DKK1 levels did not reveal any significant correlation.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>Serum OPN and DKK1 levels of HCC patients could be considered as novel biomarkers showing prognostic significance after hepatectomy based on long-term survival data.</P>
