Floristic study of Jang-do (Isl.) in Korea

We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.

We investigated the pollinators of Centipede's foot orchid (Cleisostoma scolopendrifolium) at five locations in southern Korea. Only one species of megachilid bee (Megachile yasumatsui) was observed at three of the sites (Mokpo, Haenam, and Wando). We assumed that the megachilid bee worked as a sole pollinator of C. scolopendrifolium based on the visiting behavior of the bees the attached pollinia. Fruits were observed at the three locations that bees visited: 74% fruit set at Mokpo, 59% at Wando, and 31% at Haenam. By contrast, at two of the locations where megachilid bees did not visit the plants (Naju and Jindo), there were no fruits set. The differences in fruit set rates at the three orchid populations where bees were observed appear to be related to bee abundance and flower visitation rate rather than to differences in flower abundance. The pollination interaction between C. scolopendrifolium and megachilid bees appears to involve sexual deception since only male bees were attracted to the flowers. The underlying mechanism involved in this interaction needs investigation.
An Indoor Visible Light Communication Positioning System Using a RF Carrier Allocation Technique

<P>We propose a new indoor positioning system utilizing visible light communication. Intensity modulation/direct detection and carrier allocation methods are utilized in the proposed system. Simultaneous three channel transmissions were applied to calculate the receiver's position. The characteristics of the proposed positioning system were investigated through simulation based on the experimental results, and the feasibility of the proposed system was verified by experimentation. The experimental result shows that the average error of estimated positions is reduced to 2.4 cm using adjustment process by normalizing method, which is compared with 141.1 cm without adjustment process.</P>

<P>It is necessary in visible light communication where different information from adjacent cells is distinguishable without inter-cell interference for indoor localization-based services and positioning systems. In order to mitigate inter-cell interference, a carrier allocation-visible light communication system, adopting various carriers among the system's respective cells, is suggested. The effects of inter-cell interference for a single channel and the proposed systems are investigated by experimentation with simultaneous transmissions of QPSK signals.</P>
A STUDY OF MICROHARDNESS AND POLYMERIZATION SHRINKAGE OF PACKABLE RESINS

Packable resin은 아말감을 대신할 수 있을 것이라는 기대와 함께 상용화되었다. 이런 packable resin은 종래의 hybrid resin과는 달리 필러함량이 높고 분포가 더 조밀하다. 본 연구에서는 높은 필러함량이 packable resin의 미세경도와 경화수축에 미치는 영향을 조사하고 그 결과들을 hybrid resin에서 얻은 것들과 비교하였다. 그 결과 packable resin은 hybrid resin에 비하여 보다 높은 미세경도를 보였는데 본 실험에 사용된 레진들은 종류에 관계없이 그들의 미세경도가 필러함량 (vol%)과 상관관계가 있었다. 또한 packable resin은 hybrid resin에 비하여 훨씬 적게 경화수축 하였는데 관찰된 경화수축과 필러함량 사이에는 역상관관계가 있었다. Packable resins have been introduced in the market with high expectations as an alternative to amalgam. They are characterized by a high-filler load and a filler distribution that gives them a different consistency compared with the hybrid resins. The effect of high filler load on the microhardness and polymerization shrinkage of packable resins was tested. Hybrid resins were also tested to compared with the packable resins. As a result, packable resins showed a much greater microhardness value than hybrid resins. All the tested resins have a correlationship with the microhardness and filler content (vol%). The packable resins showed much less polymerization shrinkage than hybrid resins. The filer content and polymerization shrinkage were inversely correlated in the tested resins.

The injection molding industry is in the hard situation where it cannot make both ends meet and guarantee the best products because of unstable injection molding machine which is not enough in reproduction and repetition. Besides, there is the deficiency of human resources because most people dislike laborious jobs and, so far, we have not developed new products which substitute for plastics. However, from now on, all the industrial fields including household electric appliances and automobile industry will have to be dependant on the plastic industry. By the result of above situations, there will be much more studies on the plastic goods. Through this study, I come to realize the importance of industries involved in the injection molding and research laboratories and colleges that study injection molding machine.
Pain Assessment in Brain Tumor Patients after Elective Craniotomy

Objective: This study was performed to assess the postoperative pain of brain tumor patients who underwent elective craniotomy and to evaluate the factors associated with pain intensity. Methods: From January 2010 to December 2011, 47 patients with newly diagnosed brain tumors who underwent craniotomy were enrolled. The postoperative pain status was assessed daily until discharge using the visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: The study participants comprised of 22 males and 25 females with ages ranging from 18-76 years (median age, 50 years). Patients were divided into two groups: the painful group included patients who had a VAS score of more than 3 during their hospital stay after the craniotomy, and the tolerable group included patients who had a VAS score of 1 to 3 during their hospital stay. There were no differences between the two groups in terms of age, sex, location of surgery, history of diabetes, hypertension and smoking, body mass index, and hospital stay. Univariate analysis revealed that operating time, length of wound, head fixation, and perioperative administration of opioid were not associated with the intensity of postoperative pain. Daily assessment of VAS revealed the two peaks of pain on the operation day and the 4th postoperative day. The intensity of pain during the ambulation period was higher than that during intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Conclusion: Pain following elective craniotomy for brain tumor removal is insufficiently managed, especially after discharge from the ICU. More attention needs to be paid to patients` pain throughout the hospital stay.

Collagenous eolitis is an uncommon condition of unknown etiology, charactcrized by chronic watery diarrbea and thickening of the subepithelial collagen band with chronic inflammation. We report two cases of collagenous colitis in a 23-year-old male and 35-year-old female who complain of chronic diarrhea and weight loss. Laboratory and radialogie studies were not remarkable. Colonoscopic examination showed no gross abnarmality but colonoscopic mucosal biopsy showed thickening of subepithelial collagen band and chmnic inflammation.
