      • Foreign Workers and Remittances in Japan After the Global Financial Crisis

        ( Eriko Hiraiwa ) 한국국제경제학회 2013 한국국제경제학회 학술대회발표 논문집 Vol.2013 No.4

The global financial crisis and resultant recession in 2008 affected the foreign workers in Japan; especially Japanese descent Brazilians have suffered. The magnitude of the impact on them was so big that issues have been raised whether Japanese policies and schemes on foreign workers could work appropriately. This paper aims to reexamine what have happened to the foreign residents and workers in Japan especially focusing regions characterized by the accumulation of workers such as Japanese descent Brazilians. Then we look into their remittances to Brazil using primary data to explore the impact of economic recession on foreign workers from an international perspective. We suggest that the foreign residents are polarized in two groups; one is the group of those who were forced to return to their home countries because of unemployment and the other would be the group of those who continue to obtain full-time jobs due to their skills and abilities of adjusting themselves to the Japanese society. This issue needs further investigation.

A Further Analysis on the Welfare Effects of Illegal Immigration

( Eriko Hiraiwa ),( Makoto Tawada ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2003 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.18 No.2

This paper re-examines Yoshida`s analysis (1993 and 1996) and draws further aspects of economic welfare within Bond and Chen`s framework (1987). We show that an increase in fine that a firm pays could be a better policy than an intensification of internal inspection enforcement from a welfare point of view. We also show that, in the case where capital is internationally mobile, if technologies are different between countries and labor-capital intensity is larger in the home country than in the foreign, the impact of an increase in enforcement on the factor prices is opposite to that of Bond and Chen (1987). We also enlarge the welfare effect of an increase in enforcement more precisely in the case of capital movement.
