The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sex role identity and the interest in the opposite sex of high school male students on the appearance management attitude. For this purpose, questionnaire was administered to 600 high school male students selected from four high schools located in Gwangju from November 18 to 21, 2005. Data from 574 participants were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Factor analysis, ANOVA, Duncan-test, t-test, x2-test and the descriptive analysis were used to analyze the data. The results were as follows. 1. The differences of the appearance management attitude according to the sex role identity show that androgynous group has a positive attitude to clothing, body, face and hair care, whereas undifferentiated inclination group has the less positive attitude. 2. The boys’ highschool students who have less interests in the opposite sex are the most positive to the appearance management attitude and particularly to the clothing care and there is a clear distinction between the students with much interests and little. 3. The interaction between the sex role identity and the interests in the opposite sex has a similar effect on clothing, face and hair care, and among the students who have androgynous and great interests in the opposite sex show more positive attitudes. 4. It appears that academic high school students are more positive to the appearance making attitude, especially to the clothing care than vocational high school students. The students, moreover, who are seeing someone(or have once before) take up more positive attitudes to the appearance than others.
