위계적 남성과 박탈된 여성, 그리고 약자의 연대와 위로 : ｢숙향전｣ 독해와 교육의 시각

본고는 ｢숙향전｣에 나타난 가족 구성원의 관계 양상에 착목하여, 문학적으로 형상화 된 가족 구성원의 관계 가운데 부녀 사이를 주목한 것에 해당된다. ｢숙향전｣에 포착된 부녀 관계는 친부인 김전과 숙향, 의부인 장승상과 숙향의 관계가 주목되는데, 불안한 삶에 노출된 딸을 보호할 책임이 있는 아버지가 오히려 불안을 가중시키는 주체로 설정되어 있다. 아버지라는 이름으로 자행되는 딸에 대한 박탈은 아버지와 가문이라는 권위를 유지하기 위해 작동된다. 혈연으로 얽혀있는 부녀 사이라도 아버지와 가문의 위상에 도움이 안 된다면 가족이란 관계로 지속될 수 없음을 보여준다는 점에서 가족의 허상을 폭로하고 있다. 이점은 비단 아버지와 딸의 관계뿐 아니라 남편과 아내의 관계에서도 동일하게 작동한다는 점에서 의미심장하다. 한편 ｢숙향전｣에서는 아버지로부터 유기된 숙향을 돕는 조력자의 존재가 또한 눈에 띈다. 이들은 새와 같은 동물 또는 사회적 약자의 형상으로 현신한다. 노인을 제외한 대부분은 여자아이, 늙은 할미 등과 같은 여성으로 등장하는 반면 기득권 세력을 대변하는 남성이 조력자로 비중 있게 소환되지 않는다. 숙향과 사회적 약자들의 관계는 도움을 주고받는 관계 속에서 미력한 존재가 가치를 인식할 수 있고, 주고받음을 통해 서로에게 의지하고 연대하는 것의 의미가 어떤 것인지 보여준다. 조력자들은 사회 체제 속에서 허약하기만 한 여성의 현실을 직시하고 일종의 휴식처와 같은 존재로 역할을 수행하였다. 사회적 약자라는 동일한 처지에서 한 여성에게 가해지는 고통을 외면하지 않고 그들이 할 수 있는 위로의 방식을 통해 연대의 가치를 실천에 옮긴 것이다. ｢숙향전｣에서 재조명해야 할 부분은 바로 여기에 있으며, 숙향을 비롯한 사회적 약자들의 관계가 일방적 위계가 아닌 조력과 보은이라는 인정과 공존으로 형상화되고 있는 것에서 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 이런 측면에서 ｢숙향전｣에 그려진 고난과 핍박은 전통시대 여성의 박탈된 삶을 운명론이란 명분으로 희석시킨 여성의 현실을 응시하고 재현한 것이라 할 수 있다. 그것이 결혼 이전에 집중적으로 설정된다는 점에서 미혼 여성에게 가해지는 사회적 압력과 구속이 가족 내외부에서 지속적으로 제기된 문제였음을 보여준다. 이점은 ｢숙향전｣을 독해하는 시각에서 여성과 딸에 대한 편향성을 통해 상호 평등에 기초한 주체적 인간의 성장이 가족의 가치를 드러내는데 중요한 요소로 연결될 수 있음을 의미한다. ｢숙향전｣을 가지고 고소설 교육에서 활용할 수 있는 부분이 바로 여기에 있다. 이른바 젠더 교육과 관련하여 가정․가문소설 계열 작품이 재설정될 필요가 있는 것이다. 그것은 당대 사회의 현실을 착목한 것이며 문학적으로 구현된 실제에 해당된다. 하지만 이점은 오늘날과 다른 것에 주목하는 이유를 환기시킨다. 왜 다르고, 무엇이 문제인가? 이런 측면에서 ｢숙향전｣은 남성과 여성, 특히 아버지와 딸의 관계를 중심으로 독해했을 때, 위계와 박탈, 고난과 화해가 연속되는 부녀의 관계가 새롭게 조명될 수 있다. 혈연이지만 부권 가문 중심 위계가 강력하게 작동하는 관계란 점에서 가족인 듯 아닌 듯 점철된 부녀의 형상은 고난의 연속인 여성의 삶을 강조하는 형태로 진행된다. 이점은 여성의 삶에 대한 인식이 여성의 몫이 아니라, 모두가 공감해야 할 현실이며 ｢숙향전｣은 그런 측면에서 가족 구성원의 관계, 특히 부녀의 관계에 시각을 맞춘 독해가 요청된다. This paper is based on the relationship of family members in ｢Sook -Hyang-Jeon｣ and noted the relationship between father and daughter among the literary figures of family members. The relationship between father and daughter captured in ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ is drawing attention to the relationship between his biological father Kim Jeon and his stepfather Jang Seung-sang, who is responsible for protecting his daughter exposed to anxiety. The deprivation of a daughter in the name of a father works to maintain the authority of father and family. It reveals the family s illusion in that even a father and a daughter intertwined with blood ties show that they cannot continue as a family if they do not help their father and family status. This is significant in that it works the same not only in the father-daughter relationship but also in the husband-wife relationship. Meanwhile, in ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ the presence of a helper who helps his father s abandoned is also noticeable. They are transformed into the shape of animals such as birds or socially disadvantaged people. While most of them appear as women such as girls and old grannies, it is confirmed that men representing vested interests are not summoned as assistants. The relationship between Sook-hyang and the socially disadvantaged has become able to recognize the value of insignificant beings in the relationship of help and experience what it means to rely on and unite with each other through exchange. Helpers faced the reality of a weak woman in the social system and acted as a kind of resting place. They did not turn a blind eye to the pain inflicted on a woman in the same situation as the socially disadvantaged, but put the value of solidarity into practice in a comforting way they could. This is where the re-examination of the ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ should be found, and the meaning can be found in the fact that the relationship of the socially disadvantaged, including Sook-hyang, is shaped by the recognition and coexistence of assistance and return for a favor, not unilateral hierarchy. In this regard, the hardships and persecutions depicted in ｢Sook- Hyang-Jeon｣ are a reproduction of the reality of women who dilute the deprived life of women in traditional times in the name of fatalism. Given that it is set intensively before marriage, it shows that social pressure and restraint on unmarried women have been continuously raised both inside and outside the family. This means that from a reading perspective of ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣, self-reliant human growth based on mutual equality can lead to an important element that reveals family values through bias toward women and daughters. This is where ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ can be used in Korean classic novel education, and works in the family novels need to be reset in connection with so-called gender education. It is a combination of the realities of society of its time and a literary embodiment. But the benefits evoke reasons for paying attention to something different from today. Why is it different, and what is the problem? In this respect, ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ can shed new light on the relationship between a man and a woman, especially a father- daughter relationship, in which hierarchy, deprivation, hardship and reconciliation continue. Given that the relationship between the father and the daughter is strongly working, the shape of the father and daughter, which seems to be a family, emphasizes the life of women, a series of hardships. This is not a woman s perception of life, but a reality that everyone should sympathize with, and ｢Sook-Hyang-Jeon｣ requires reading comprehension that focuses on family members relationships, especially the relationship between father and daughter.

후대소설에 미친 <숙향전>의 영향과 소설사적 의의

<숙향전>은 <구운몽>, <사씨남정기>, <창선감의록>, <소현성록> 등과 함께 17세기 말에 창작되었으며, 이들 작품과 함께 우리 고소설이 본격적으로 발전하는 데 근간이 된 작품이다. 특히 <숙향전>은 신분의 차이에 따른 남녀의 애정 문제를 주요 갈등으로 설정한 가운데 남녀의 차별과 절대적 가부장권에 대해서도 이의를 제기하는 등 민중적․진보적 성향이 강한 작품으로, 조선 후기 부녀자와 하층민들에게 대단한 인기를 끌었다. 이는 <춘향전>, <심청전>, <배비장전>, <봉산탈춤>, <성주풀이>, <화전가> 등에 <숙향전>과 관련된 내용이 삽입되어 있다는 것을 통해서도 알 수 있다. 그런데 한동안 다대한 환상성이나 비현실적인 측면을 부정적으로 이해한 결과 <숙향전>의 가치와 소설사적 의의가 평가 절하되는 경향이 있었다. 이에 본고는 <숙향전>이 후대 소설에 미친 영향을 논증함으로써 <숙향전>의 소설사적 의의를 다소나마 드러낼 목적으로 시도되었다. 그 결과 <숙향전>은 개별 화소와 사건에서부터 인물 형상과 구성, 선계의 형상과 세계관 등 다양한 측면에서 후대소설에 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 여기서 고찰 대상으로 삼은 작품은 <박씨전>, <육미당기>, <쌍주기연>, <김원전>, <장경전>, <금방울전>, <소대성전>, <남윤전>, <적성의전>, <김진옥전> 등인데 이들 작품은 필자가 개인적으로 인지한 작품에 한정되어 있는바, 실제로는 훨씬 더 많은 작품들이 직․간접적으로 <숙향전>의 영향을 받았을 것으로 추정된다. <숙향전>은 여주인공의 고난과 여러 신령들의 구원, 남녀주인공의 사랑과 시련, 선계의 모습에 대한 생생한 형상, 조선 후기 물정과 세태의 사실적 반영, 소외된 인물의 심리와 정서에 대한 곡진한 표출, 경계 허물기와 동일시의 서사 등 실로 다양하면서도 흥미진진한 요소가 매우 많다. <숙향전>이 조선 후기에 널리 향유되었던 것도 이들 요소가 복합적으로 작용한 결과라고 할 수 있다. 또한 후대의 많은 고소설이 이들 요소 가운데 일부를 차용하고 있는바, <숙향전>은 우리 고소설의 특질과 가치를 全有하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 이 논문을 계기로 <숙향전>이 후대의 고소설에 미친 영향이 더욱 폭넓고 깊이 있게 고구되어 <숙향전>의 소설사적 위상과 의의가 제대로 밝혀지길 기대한다. Along with <Guunmong>, <Sassinamjeonggi>, <Changseongamuirok>, and <Sohyeonseongrok>, <Sukhyangjeon> was written at the end of the seventeenth century which also served as the foundation of expansion of our ancient fictions. Of these, <Sukhyangjeon> was especially well-liked by women and lower class folks as it was more folky and progressive, setting focus on a lovers’ quarrel and refuting the social system of patriarchy and gender discrimination. This is also evident from the fact that the contents of <Sukhyangjeon> can be found in <Chunhyangjeon>, <Simcheongjeon>, <Baebijangjeon>, <Bongsantalchum>, <Seongjupuli> and <Hwajeonga>. Then again, for some time, the value of the fiction was underestimated by those who adversely understood the fantasy or unrealistic aspect of the story. This paper was attempted to demonstrate the effect of <Sukhyangjeon> on the ensuing fictions to divulge the significance of the story in the history of fiction writing. As a result, it was disclosed that certain segments or units of the story were featured in <Bakssijeon>, <Geumbanguljeon>, <Namyunjeon>, <Sodaeseongjeon>, <Jeokseonguijeon>, <Yukmidanggi>, <Ssangjugiyeon>, <Gimjinokjeon>, <Janggyeongjeon>, and <Gimwonjeon>. These are only the ones that I could personally read over and I believe there are many more works that were influenced, either directly or indirectly, by <Sukhyangjeon>. The plot of <Sukhyangjeon> includes diverse and fascinating elements including the hardships of the female protagonist, salvations made by numerous gods, love and ordeal between the male and female protagonists, vivid description of the heavens, social conditions in late Joseon dynasty, heartfelt display of the psychology and emotions of those alienated, and braking down the barriers. It can be safely assumed that these complex intersections were the very reason why the story was more enjoyed by most people. As many of the fictions from this time feature a number of these elements, it won’t be a stretch to claim that <Sukhyangjeon> retain all of the characteristics and values of our ancient fictions. By this paper, I hope that the effect of <Sukhyangjeon> is more widely and deeply studied to ascertain its true value and significance in the history of fiction writing.

<숙향전>의 근원설화 <숙향이굴> 전설 - 두 작품에 나타난 지명과 내용 비교를 중심으로

본고는 <숙향전>과 논산의 <숙향이굴> 전설에 등장하는 지명과 내용 비교를 통한 유사성을 바탕으로, <숙향이굴> 전설이 <숙향전>의 근원설화일 가능성을 제기해 보았다. <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설은 지명적 유사성을 갖는다. 첫째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설에는 모두 ‘숙향이굴’과 숙향이 바위틈(숙향이굴)에 숨는 화소가 나타난다. 둘째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설에는 모두 ‘반야산’이 등장하며, 반야산(盤若山)이라는 한자명까지도 동일하다. 셋째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설에는 모두 ‘표진강’과 숙향이 표진강에 투신하는 화소가 나타나며, 표진강(漂津江)이라는 한자명까지도 일치한다. <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설은 내용적 유사성을 갖는다. 첫째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설의 주인공은 모두 ‘숙향(淑香)’으로 한자 이름까지도 동일하다. 둘째, <숙향전>에서 숙향은 중국의 4대 미인에 비견될 만큼 매우 아름답다고 묘사되며, <숙향이굴> 전설의 숙향도 백제의 양귀비라 불릴 정도로 매우 아름답게 묘사된다. 셋째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설에서 숙향의 출생은 모두 어부와 관련되어 있다. <숙향전>에서 숙향은 태어나게 된 내력이 어부와 관련되어 있으며, <숙향이굴> 전설에서 숙향은 어부의 딸이다. 넷째, <숙향전>에서 숙향은 바느질 솜씨가 매우 뛰어난 것으로 묘사되며, <숙향이굴> 전설의 숙향 또한 나름대로 좋은 바느질 솜씨를 가지고 있다. 다섯째, <숙향전>과 <숙향이굴> 전설 모두 숙향은 부당한 권력에 의해 사랑하는 남자와 혼사 장애를 겪어 죽음의 위기까지 닥쳐온다. 이러한 지명적·내용적 유사성의 근거들로 <숙향전>은 논산이 고향인 작자가 <숙향이굴> 전설을 근원설화로 삼았으며, 여기에 도교적 세계관·불교의 윤회 사상·유교의 충효 사상·적강 화소·용궁 화소·水族報恩설화·亂中棄兒 보호설화·仙藥求得설화·건국신화·서사무가 등을 배경설화로 결합하여 창작한 고전소설이라고 추정해 본다.

<숙향전>에 나타난 선계(仙界)의 형상과 작가의식

<숙향전>은 <구운몽>, <사씨남정기>, <창선감의록> 등과 함께 17세기 말에 창작되었 으며, 고전소설 가운데 가장 널리 애독되었던 작품 가운데 하나이다. 그러나 오늘날 <숙 향전>에 대한 연구자들의 관심은 이 작품의 인기도에 비해 상대적으로 매우 낮은 편인 데, 이는 그간 현실주의적 시각에서 고전소설을 조명하려는 경향과 관련되어 있다. <숙 향전>은 환상적ㆍ비현실적 성격이 강한 작품이기 때문에 연구자들의 관심에서 멀어질 수밖에 없었던 것이다. <숙향전>에는 후토부인의 명사계, 서왕모의 요지연, 용왕의 남해용궁, 성황들이 지키 는 열두 나라, 봉래산과 천태산 등 여러 선계가 비교적 구체적으로 형상화되어 있다. 이들 선계는 오랫동안 전승되어온 설화를 바탕으로 형상되었을 터이지만, 우리 소설 가 운데는 <숙향전>만큼 선계와 신적 존재에 대한 이야기가 풍부하면서도 구체적으로 형상 화된 작품은 찾아보기가 어렵다. 이런 점에서 <숙향전>은 조선후기 사람들이 선계를 어떻게 상상하고 인식했는가를 파악하고, 나아가 신적 존재들에 대한 조선 후기인들의 관 념과 인식을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 자료라고 하겠다. <숙향전>에서 천상 또는 선계는 인간의 삶과 운명을 좌우하는 본원적 세계로 설정되 어 있는데, 여기에는 운명론적 사고가 깃들어 있다. 그러나 이를 근거로 작가가 철저한 운명론자라고 생각해서는 안 된다. <숙향전>의 선계는 원인을 알 수 없는 고통스러운 현실을 합리적으로 이해하기 위한 상상적 공간이면서 당대인들의 여망이 담긴 세계 질서 의 모형이라는 성격도 지니고 있기 때문이다. 또한 <숙향전>은 천정인연이라는 운명론적 세계관을 활용하여 신분의 차이가 현격한 청춘남녀의 결혼을 정당화함으로써 봉건적 신분질서를 부정하고 남녀의 사랑을 옹호한 효과를 창출하기도 한다. <숙향전>에 나타난 선계는 인간세계에서는 볼 수 없는 환상적인 풍광과 기이한 것들 이 존재하는 이상세계로 설정되어 있으며, 이곳에서 노니는 신선들은 장생불사할 뿐만 아니라 시공을 자유자재로 넘나드는 것으로 형상화되어 있다. 이러한 형상 속에는 신선 처럼 장생불사하면서 선경과 같은 공간에서 자유롭게 풍류를 즐기고자 하는 작자의 욕망 이 반되어 있다. <숙향전>의 작자는 선계와 신선들의 자유로운 풍류를 상상적으로 형 상화함으로써 현세에서의 갈등과 고통에서 벗어나고자 하는 서글픈 욕망을 표출했던 것이다. <숙향전>은 어떤 고전소설보다도 선계와 신적 존재들에 대한 이야기가 풍부하면서도 구체적으로 형상화되어 있는 작품이라고 할 수 있는바, 이 논문을 계기로 <숙향전>의 가치와 의의가 새롭게 조명되기를 기대한다. “ Sukhyangcheon ” depicts relatively specifically various enchanted lands such as Huto woman’s Myeongsagye, Xi Wangmu’s Yojiyeon, the Dragon King of the Sea’s, the southern sea palace, the wise kings’ 12 nations, the Isle of Eternal Youth, Cheontaesan Mountain, etc. These enchanted lands are assumed to be depicted based on folk tales which have been passed down for a long time. It is hard to find a Korean literary work that has a rich story and depicts the enchanted lands and heavenly existence specifically like “ Sukhyangcheon ”. In this aspect, “ Sukhyangcheon ” could be good material to use to look at the late Joseon people’s ideas and perceptions on the divine existence. This could also identify how the people of the late Joseon Dynasty imagined and perceived the heavenly world. “ Sukhyangcheon ” sets up the heaven or fairy land as the original world that decides human life and destiny, which shows fatalism. But, we should not assume the writer of this story is a complete fatalist. The heavenly world of “ Sukhyangcheon ” could be also a model of the world orders. These contain the aspirations of the people of the era. They also contain the imaginary world in order to reasonably understand groundless painful reality. In addition, “ Sukhyangcheon ” uses a fate-oriented world view called “heavenly destiny” in order to justify the marriage of the youth couple who have a big difference in social status, denying the feudal order of social status while advocating the love of men and women. “ Sukhyangcheon ” describes the ideal world where fantastic scenery and curious things exist. These cannot be seen in the human world. The Taoist hermits in this ideal world live forever and transcend time and space. This scenery reflects the author's desire to enjoy the arts freely in a heavenly world while having eternal life like the Taoist hermits. With an imaginary depiction of the free arts of the heaven and the gods, the author expressed a sad desire to escape from the real world’s conflicts and pains.

<숙향전>에 나타난 마고할미의 역할과 그 의미 - <이대봉전>의 마고할미와의 대조를 중심으로

<숙향전>은 어린 숙향이 전쟁 중에 부모와 헤어져 전쟁고아가 된 이후 홀로 고난의 여정을 겪다가 훗날 헤어져 있던 부모와 재회하고 천생배필과 연분을 다시 맺는 서사구조를 가지고 있다. 또한 여기에 도교의 환상적 요소와 남녀주인공들의 전생담을 치밀하게 끼워 넣음으로써 현실과 환상계가 공존하는 양상을 보이는 다채로운 성격을 지닌 작품이다. 본고에서는 <숙향전>에 등장하는 다양한 천상계 존재들 중에서도 작품의 전개에서 비중 있게 등장하는 인물유형인 ‘마고할미’에 주목해 봄으로써 작품 내에서의 서사적 역할과 기능을 살펴보고 의미를 밝혀보는 것을 목적으로 한다. <숙향전>에 등장하는 천상계 존재들 중에서도 가장 많은 비중을 차지하는 ‘마고할미’다. 하지만 천상계 조력자라는 기능적 측면에서 전체적인 부분으로 언급되거나 설명되는 경우가 많았다. 때문에 이러한 양상에 주목하여 작품을 바라보기에는 작품에 등장하는 ‘마고할미’의 주동적인 면모와 다층적인 역할이 소략해지는 측면이 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 ‘만남- 거주- 이별’의 순서에 따라 <숙향전>의 ‘마고할미’와 공통적인 인물유형이 등장하는 <이대봉전>의 ‘마고할미’ 양상들을 아울러 살펴보고 ‘마고할미’가 가지고 있는 다양한 역할을 확인함으로써 <숙향전>에 등장하는 ‘마고할미’만의 구별되는 양상과 특성에 대해 자세히 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이러한 과정은 <숙향전>의 마고할미가 가진 다양하고 포괄적인 성격을 고찰할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 <이대봉전>에 활용된 마고할미의 공통점과 더불어 축소된 양상도 짚어볼 수 있는 계기를 마련해 준다는 점에서 중요하다. <숙향전>의 마고할미는 <이대봉전>에 나타난 마고할미처럼 주인공에게 신이한 능력을 제공하고 영웅성을 부각시키기 위해 활용되고 소거되는 인물유형이 아니다. 때문에 <숙향전>의 마고할미가 지닌 다층적인 성격으로 인해 주인공 숙향을 특별한 존재로 부각시키는 역할을 하게 되는 것이다. 이는 마고할미가 숙향을 다양한 고난으로부터 지켜주는 존재에 위치함으로 가능할 수 있던 일이며, 더 나아가 이러한 마고할미의 특성은 한편으로 홀로 남겨진 현실세계의 어린 숙향이 겪는 비극을 부각하여 전란의 후유증을 극대화시키는 역할을 할 수 있게 된다. 여기서 주목되는 마고할미 역할은 천상계와 현실계의 특성을 고루 갖추어 활용됨으로써 작품 전체의 서사 속에서 적절하게 녹아들고 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있다는데서 더욱 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 그러므로 <숙향전>에 나타난 ‘마고할미’를 살펴보는 과정은 작품을 보다 다각적인 시각으로 해석하는데 필요한 작업이라고 할 수 있다. <Sukhyangjeon> is young Suk-hyang breaks up with her parents during the war and becomes a war orphan. Because of this, she goes through hardships alone. It has an epic structure that recounts with a parent who is separated from shes parents and has a romantic relationship with she's fiance. There is also a fantastic element of Taoism and a pre life story between the male and female protagonists in novel's part. Because of this, reality and fantasy coexist. In this paper, focus on the character 'fairy-tale crone' of a wide variety of fantasy world-class beings in the novel. and The purpose of the chapter is to identify the role and function in the narration. 'fairy-tale crone' is generally mentioned in terms of the function of the A helper of fantasy world. Given this fairy-tale crone's helper aspect of the situation, the figure of the characters appearing in the works becomes less. therefore look at the <Sukhyangjeon>'s fairy-tale crone and <Leedaebongjeon>'s fairy-tale crone character with 'meet'- 'living'- 'break'. and let's look at the features and characteristics that distinguish this. Such a process can consider a wide variety of diverse and comprehensive characteristics. 〈숙향전〉의 환상담의 서사전략과 독서효과

본 연구의 목적은 「숙향전」의 환상담의 서사전략과 독서효과에 주목하여 「숙향전」이 당대 독자들에게 흥미와 인기를 끌었던 이유를 구체적으로 설명하는 것이다. 「숙향전」의 환상담은 크게 네 가지 방향으로 전략적으로 구성된다. 첫째, 초현실적 존재가 미래사를 예시함으로써 가해적(可解的) 독서 맥락을 형성한다. 또한 세부 사건이 일어나게 된 이유는 뒤에 해명하여 긴장적 독서 맥락을 형성한다. 둘째, 시혜와 보은, 악행과 응징의 대칭적 구조화는 당대인이 지니고 있는 권선징악과 인과응보적 관념이라는 윤리적 기대지평을 반영한 것이다. 그러나 권선징악과 인과 응보는 현실에서는 제대로 실현되지 못하지만 「숙향전」에서는 이러한 이상적 윤리가치가 실현되고 있기 때문에 독자들은 「숙향전」에 보다 호응하게 된다. 셋째, 「숙향전」의 초현실적 존재는 남녀 간의 진정한 사랑과 부성애(父性愛)를 시험하는 역할을 수행하고 이를 통해 남녀 간의 낭만적 사랑과 진정한 부성애에 대한 독자의 기대심리를 반영한다. 넷째, 이선의 구약여행은 이계의 경이로움을 표현하고 흥취와 향락의 삶과 불로 장생의 욕망을 재현하는 통로로 기능한다. This study aims to focus on narrative strategies and reading effect of the fantasy tale in “Sukhyangjeon” to explain in detail the reasons why it drew so much interest and became popular among the readers of the time. The fantasy tale in “Sukhyangjeon” is largely constituted in four different ways from the strategic point of view. First, by setting up a surreal being to tell the future in advance, it creates an intelligible reading context, thus constructing a comfortable reading environment. And the background of specific events is explained at the later stage, which adds the tension in the reading context. Second, the popular didactic and punitive justice ideas of the time such as doing a favor and getting repaid for it, or doing an evil deed and getting punished do not realize properly in the real life, but as “Sukhyangjeon” fulfills such idealistic moral values, it received a favorable response from the readers. Third, the surreal being of “Sukhyangjeon” carries out the role of testing true love between a man and a woman as well as the truthful parental love of a father, and through that the book reflects the romantic love between a couple and the truthful parental love that the readers expect and yearn for. Fourth, Lee Seon’s “journey in search of medicine” functions as the passage to express the wonders of this world and to reconstruct people’s desire for a life of joy and bliss and the desire to enjoy eternal youth.

<숙향전>의 생태주의적 독해

본고는 <숙향전>을 생태주의적 관점에서 독해한 것이다. 생태주의에서는 부분과 전체, 개체와 환경의 유기성을 강조한다. <숙향전>에서 숙향의 고난은 전생의 죄(罪)에서 비롯된 것인데, 이러한 인과 관계는 생태주의적 사유와 흡사하다. 그리고 숙향과 이선은 타인의 고통이 자기에게서 비롯되었다고 말하는바, 자신과 세계가 깊이 연결되어 있다는 생태주의적 사유가 타자와의 간격을 없앨 수 있었던 것이다. 생태주의에서는 인간중심주의와 이분법적 사고의 극복을 중요한 과제로 생각한다. 숙향은 사회의 최약자로서 고난을 스스로 극복하지 못하고 신과 동물 들의 도움을 받는데, <숙향전>은 인간은 나약한 존재로서 인간이 아닌 존재들의 도움 없이는 살아갈 수 없다는 점을 보여주고 있다. <숙향전>에는 신과 인간, 그리고 동물 사이에 엄격한 위계질서가 존재하지 않으며, 인간이 자연과 동물을 지배하지 않는다. <숙향전>은 가족의 붕괴로 상징되는 공동체의 위기를 생태주의적 실천으로 극복할 수 있다는 낙관적 전망을 보여준다. 하지만 이것이 전부는 아니다. <숙향전>의 결말을 보면, 숙향이 생부모를 남겨 두고 먼저 승천(昇天)하는데, 이는 곧 자식을 버린 부모는 진정한 부모가 아니라는 뜻이다. <숙향전>은 재난 속에서 버림받은 유기아(遺棄兒)들의 기억을 담고 있는 작품이다. 유기아의 입장에서 볼 때 자신에게 닥친 고난은 환상계나 전생 등을 끌어들이지 않고서는 납득하기 어려운 것이었으며, 그 무엇보다도 두려운 것은 이 세상에 유대감을 느낄 수 있는 존재가 없다는 사실이었을 것이다. 숙향의 조력자들이 대개 신이나 동물이라는 것은 유기아들의 조력자가 거의 없었음을 반증한다. <숙향전>은 유기아 문제를 환상적인 방식으로 해결하고 있다는 점에서 일정한 한계를 지니고 있지만, 이로 인해 생태주의적 사유에 육박하는 성과를 거둘 수 있었다. This paper is a reading and comprehension of Sukhyangjeon from an ecological point of view. Ecology emphasizes the organic relationship of parts and wholes, individuals and environments. In Sukhyangjeon, Sukhyang"s suffering is the result of the sins of her past life, and this causal relationship is similar to ecological thinking. And Suk-hyang and Iseon say that the suffering of each other comes from them. This is because the ecological thinking that the self and the world are deeply connected was able to close the gap with others. Meanwhile, ecology considers the overcoming of anthropocentrism and dichotomous thinking as important tasks. As the weakest person in society, Suk-hyang cannot overcome hardships on her own and gets help from gods and animals. Here, Sukhyangjeon shows that humans are weak beings and cannot live without the help of non-human beings. In Sukhyangjeon, there is no strict hierarchy between gods, humans, and animals, and humans do not dominate nature and animals. Sukhyangjeon shows an optimistic prospect that the crisis of the community, symbolized by the collapse of the family, can be overcome through ecological practices. But that"s not all. According to the ending of Sukhyangjeon, Sukhyang ascends to heaven first leaving behind her biological parents, which means that the parents who abandoned their children are not true parents. Sukhyangjeon is a work that contains the memories of abandoned children in disaster. From a abandoned children’s point of view, it was difficult to comprehend the hardship she faced without bringing in the fantasy realm or past life, and the most frightening thing was the fact that there was no one in this world who could feel a bond. The fact that Sukhyang"s helpers are usually gods or animals proves that there were few helpers for abandoned children. Although Sukhyangjeon has certain limitations in that it solves the problem of abandoned children in a fantastic way, it was able to achieve results close to ecological thinking.

<숙향전>의 여성성장담적 성격과 그 과정에서 나타나는 환상의 기능과 의미

이 논문은 <숙향전>이 환상적 여성성장담이라는 점에 주목하여, 이 작품의 여성성장담적 성격을 먼저 살핀 후에 여성성장담으로서의 <숙향전>에 나타나는 환상의 기능과 의미에 대해 논한 것이다. <숙향전>은 주인공인 숙향이 겪어내는 수차례에 걸친 시련과 그 극복 과정이 이야기의 주된 내용이며, 이러한 시련은 태어날 때부터 이미 정해진 것으로 나타난다는 점에서 대체로 숙명론적 사고의 반영으로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 본고에서는 숙향이 겪는 이러한 ‘예정된 시련’을 인간이면 누구나 성장하기 위해 꼭 겪어내야 하는 통과의례적 시련의 의미로 보았다. 통과의례의 과정은 인간 모두에게 해당되는 보편성을 가진다는 점에서 ‘예정’되어 있는 시련으로 볼 수 있지만, 각각의 인간이 생의 각 단계에서 겪게 되는 시련의 내용과 그 극복 과정은 모두 다르기 때문에 개인에 따라 개별성을 지닌다. 숙향이 겪는 ‘예정된 시련’도 이런 관점에서 살필 수 있다. <숙향전>에서는 숙향의 성장 단계에 따라 세 차례의 통과의례가 나타난다. 숙향이 부모와 분리되면서 유아기에서 벗어나는 과정, 소녀에서 결혼 적령기에 이른 여성으로 성장하는 과정, 그리고 이상적인 배필을 만나 혼인을 한 후 그 집안의 정식 가족 구성원으로서 받아들여지는 과정에서 통과의례의 시련을 겪게 되는 것이다. 그리고 숙향은 자신에게 닥친 이러한 통과의례적 시련을 견딤과 기다림의 방식으로 극복해 내는데, 이 과정은 곧 자신의 올바른 모습을 찾아 주체적인 자아로 서기까지의 자아탐색의 과정이기도 하다. 숙향은 이러한 자아탐색의 과정을 거치며 내적 성장을 이루어 온전한 여성으로서 사회에 재통합된다. 숙향이 성장하는 과정에서 시공을 초월한 다양한 초월적 존재의 도움을 받게 되는 것은 숙향의 거듭되는 시련과 더불어 이 소설의 중요한 특징 중의 하나인데, 이때 <숙향전>에 나타나는 환상은 숙향이 자신에게 닥친 통과의례의 시련을 무사히 극복하여 육체적ㆍ정신적 성장을 이룰 수 있도록 돕는 역할을 하고 있다. 그러므로 이 작품에 나타나는 환상은 인간이 성장하면서 부딪히게 되는 수많은 시련에 대한 두려움을 해소시키고 그 고비를 잘 이겨낼 수 있다는 믿음을 줌으로써 현세의 삶에 대한 긍정적 인식을 갖게 하는 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 <숙향전>은 숙향이 자신이 받은 은혜를 되갚는 모습을 보여줌으로써 자연친화적이고 상호보완적인 순환론적 세계관을 드러내고 있다. <숙향전>은 이러한 내용을 통해 인간은 세계와 동떨어져 홀로 살아가야 하는 외로운 존재가 아니라, 시간과 공간을 넘어서서 하나로 연결되어 있는 세계의 한 부분으로서 그 속에서 서로 영향을 받고 도움을 주고받으며 살아가는 존재라는 확장된 자아 인식을 보여준다. Focusing on the fact that < Sukhyangjeon > presents a fantasy story of woman's growth, this study examined its features as a story of woman's growth and discussed the functions and meanings of fantasy in it. The main plot of < Sukhyangjeon > is the process of the heroine Sukhyang facing several cases of hardship and overcoming them. The fact that her hardship was decided when she was born seemed to have reflected fatalist thinking. However, the study regarded those "prearranged sufferings" that happened to her as the trials as part of rite of passage that any human being should undergo in order to growth. The rite of passage is applied to all human beings and thus universal, presenting "prearranged sufferings". However, it also holds individuality since individuals have different sufferings and overcoming processes in each of life stages. Sukhyang's "prearranged sufferings" can be approached from that perspective. In < Sukhyangjeon >, Sukhyang goes through three rites of passage according to her growth stages, and they are the process of Sukhyang being separated from her parents and growing out of her childhood, that of her growing from a girl into a mature lady up for marriage, and that of her meeting and marrying an ideal husband and being accepted by his family as a regular family member. Sukhyang overcomes those sufferings in the form of rite of passage through enduring and waiting, which process also represents the process of her self-exploration that involves her finding her true self and standing on her own as an independent ego. Going through the process of self-exploration, she attains internal growth and is re-incorporated into the society as a complete woman. She receives assistance from various supernatural beings beyond time and space limitations in the process of growing, which is one of the novel's important characteristics along with her repeating sufferings. The fantasies that visit her help her safely overcome the trials in the rite of passage and achieve physical and mental growth. In < Sukhyangjeon >, fantasies help her eliminate fear for many trials one gets to face in the process of growing and make her believe that she can overcome them right, thus contributing to her positive outlooks on the current life. In addition, < Sukhyangjeon > demonstrates a circular world view that is nature-friendly and mutually supplementary by showing her repaying others' kindness. With those stories, < Sukhyangjeon > shows that human beings are not lonely creatures that are supposed to live alone distant from the world but need to exchange influence and help with one another in the world as part of the world being connected as one beyond time and space.

<숙향전>의 환상성과 교육적 의의 -‘고난의 예고’와 환상의 관계를 중심으로-

이 연구는 <숙향전>을 대상으로 고전소설에 나타난 환상의 서사 전략과 의미를 살피고, <숙향전>의 환상성이 갖는 교육적 의미를 도출하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 대상 텍스트로 <숙향전>을 삼은 것은 <숙향전>이 환상성이 두드러지게 나타난 작품이며 당대 높은 인기를 구가했다는 점에서 고전소설에 나타나는 환상의 특성을 밝히기에 적합하다고 여겨졌기 때문이다. 특히 이 연구에서는 <숙향전>의 서사에서 반복적으로 나타나는 ‘고난의 예고’가 천상계의 개입을 사전에 예고함으로써 작품의 환상성을 강화한다고 보고, 숙향의 삶을 중심으로 고난의 예고와 환상의 관계를 살펴보았다. <숙향전>에서 ‘고난의 예고’가 환상을 실현하는 방식은 천상계가 숙향에게 고난을 부여하고 고난에서 구원하는 방식으로 나타난다. 우선 천상계의 예고는 <숙향전>의 거시 구조를 형성하며, 독자는 숙향의 삶이 천상계의 예고대로 실현되는 것을 보면서 인간의 운명을 관장하는 천상계의 거대한 힘을 깨닫고 천상계에 대한 경외심을 갖는다. 또한 천상계는 위험에 처한 숙향을 구하기도 하는데, 천상계의 전지전능한 힘은 고난의 순간에서 숙향이 보이는 순진한 모습과 대조되어 천상계의 초월적 힘이 주는 경이로운 느낌을 강화한다. 한편 천상계가 꿈을 통해 숙향과 주변 인물들에게 운명을 알리고 운명을 실현하게 하는 것은 작품에 신비한 분위기를 조성하고 서사의 개연성을 높이는 효과가 있다. ‘고난의 예고’를 통해서 작품의 환상성을 강화하는 것의 서사적 의미는 숙향의 현실 삶을 통해 밝힐 수 있다. 첫째, 숙향이 겪는 고난은 현실적이고 구체적이기에 독자는 숙향에 감정이입하여 다가올 고난을 두려워하고 함께 통곡하며, 숙향이 행복을 성취하는 모습을 통해 내면의 근심을 해소한다. 둘째, 숙향의 선한 행동에 감동한 천상계의 존재들이 숙향을 죽을 고비에서 구하는 것은 독자에게 선한 길을 가는 인간에게는 천상계가 함께 할 것이라는 믿음을 준다. 셋째, 숙향과 이선이 결연 과정에서 보여주는 능동적인 자세는 지상에서의 고난을 극복하고 천상계에서 그 인연을 이어가게 하며, 이는 독자에게 고난을 통해 더 상위의 삶으로 나아갈 수 있다는 희망을 준다. 이러한 <숙향전>의 환상성은 환상을 통해 현실의 불안을 극복하여 자아를 발견하게 하며, 관계 인식을 확장하여 타자와의 일체감과 연대감을 높인다는 점에서 현대 학습자에게도 유의미한 가치를 가질 것으로 기대된다. This study aimed to investigate the narrative strategy and meaning of fantasy in classic novels and to derive the educational meaning from the fantasy of Sukhyangjeon. This study selected Sukhyangjeon because is considered a suitable literary text that embodies characteristics of fantasy inherent in classical novels through its successful portrayal of the fantasy genre and its high popularity during its time. Specifically, this study observed that the “notice of hardships” which repeatedly appears in the narration of Sukhyangjeon reinforces the fantasy of the novel as it serves as an advance notice of intervention from heaven. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between the notice of hardships and fantasy by focusing on Sukhyang’s life. The way in which the “notice of hardships” is a form of illusion realized it evident in the plot when heaven saves Sukhyang from her hardship even though it was heaven that had granted her those forms of hardship. Firstly, the “notice from heaven” constitutes the macro structure of Sukhyangjeon. Through it, readers realize the enormous power of heaven by seeing how Sukhyang’s life has been realized in accordance with heaven’s notice with that, it evokes a sense of respect to heaven. In addition, heaven saves Sukhyang from different forms of danger. It enhances a miraculous feeling, which the omnipotent power of heaven shows, against the innocent appearance of Sukhyang during her times of danger. Meanwhile, when heaven notifies Sukhyang and the surrounding people of their fate and subsequently realizes it through dreams, this act creates a mysterious atmosphere and improves the probability of the narrative. If so, the narrative meaning in reinforcing the fantasy of the novel by the use of “notice of hardships” could be revealed through Sukhyang’s real life. First, the hardship in which Sukhyang has gone through is so realistic and detailed that the readers’ feelings of empathy are evoked with the fear of the coming hardship, wailing together, and trying to resolve the inner anxiety through Sukhyang’s happiness. Second, the heavenly beings who are touched by the good behaviors of Sukhyang save her from the dangers of death. This creates the belief in readers that heaven intervenes for the good people. Third, the active attitude that Sukhyang and Leesun show in the process of marriage helps them overcome their earthly hardship and preserve their relationship in heaven. This gives readers hope that they could go to a “higher life” after going through suffering. This fantasy of Sukhyangjeon helps readers overcome their anxieties of reality through fantasy and recognizes the importance of relationships to enhance a sense of unity and solidarity with others. Because of these elements, it is expected that the fantasy of Sukhyangjeon will have a meaningful value to modern readers.

<숙향전> 텍스트의 담론 특성 연구 -흥미를 견인하는 텍스트 내부 기제에 대한 고찰을 중심으로-

이 연구는 <숙향전> 텍스트 흥미를 견인하는 텍스트 내부기제로서 숙향전 텍스트의 담론 특성을 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 문학교육에서 작품을 읽게 만드는 궁극적인 요인으로서 `흥미`는 중요하다. <숙향전>은 대중적인 인기와 흥미를 끌었던 작품이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 점에 주목하여 <숙향전> 텍스트가 대중적인 흥미를 끌었던 요인을 차원에서 그 원인을 밝혀보고자 하였다. <숙향전> 텍스트의 흥미와 관련해서는 기존 논의들에 여러 가지 논의들이 있어왔다. 여기에서는 고난과 해소 모티프의 반복에 주목하되 고난과 해결모티프를 통한 스토리의 구축과 서술상의 특징으로 나누어 살펴 보았다. 서술상으로는 이를 내용상의 흐름에 따라 (1) 숙향의 고행담 부분, (2)이선과 김전과의 결연 부분, (3) 이선의 구약 여행 세 가지로 나누어 작품에 드러나는 담론 특성을 살펴보았다. (1) 부분의 경우는 그동안 여러 논의들에서 언급된 바와 같이 고난과 해결의 사후 제시를 통해 독자의 흥미를 견인하고, (2) 부분의 김전과 이 선과의 결연 부분에서는 말놀이를 통한 지연이 드러나며, (3) 부분의 경우는 고난 과정에서 드러나는 선계 풍경의 묘사적 제시를 통해 독자의 흥미를 견인하는 양상을 발견할 수 있었다. 살펴본 담론 특성을 통해 <숙향전> 텍스트가 고난과 해결이라는 모티프를 내용에 따라 다르게 서술하고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 이러한 <숙향전> 텍스트의 담론 특성은 영웅소설의 측면에서 새롭게 조명해볼 수 있을 것이다. The puropse of this paper is to analyze the discourse characteristic of Sukhyangjeon text. interest is a main factor in literature text reading. In the field of literature education to find out text`s interesr structure is most important. Sukhyangjeon is famous novel which is read by many people. paying attention to this factor this study tries to find out the reason why this text attracted many people. In this study focused on trouble-settlement sturucture and divided story and three narrative line. (1) sukhyang`s trouble part is saying problems earlier, solutions after. (2) In Kim Jeon, Yi Seoun part, the narrative is delayed by jokes. In part (3) fantastic world travel, descriptive discourses are appeared. These discourse characterics are can be related with characteristic as hero novel.
