Objective:

To investigate alterations of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in subjects with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Method:

Using [99Tcm]-hexamethyl propylenamino oxime single photon emission computed tomography, the rCBF under resting condition was compared between 19 survivors of the Taegu subway fire with PTSD and 19 comparison subjects.

Results:

PTSD patients showed a decreased rCBF in the right thalamus and an increased rCBF in the right superior parietal lobe relative to comparison subjects (corrected P < 0.05). The rCBF in the right thalamus positively correlated with the severity of current re-experience symptoms in PTSD subjects.

Conclusion:

Our finding of the thalamic rCBF decrease in PTSD patients may be a strategy to reduce re-experience symptom, by evading the process of external and internal information which can evoke traumatic memory. In addition, the parietal rCBF increase in our PTSD patients might be related to altered information processing in PTSD.

Multiple internal resorptions in deciduous teeth: a case report
Choi, Eun-Jung,Ahn, Byung-Duk,Lee, Jae-Il,Kim, Jung-Wook Munksgaard 2007 Journal of oral pathology & medicine Vol.36 No.4

We report a case of rare multiple internal resorptions. Etiology of multiple internal resorptions is unknown. Interestingly, the patient had an atopic dermatitis, which is possibly related to multiple and rapid internal resorptions.

Anti-angiogenic effect of tetraacetyl-phytosphingosine

Abstract:

In a search for the wound healing accelerators, we found that tetraacetyl-phytosphingosine (TAPS), a sphingolipid metabolite produced by phytosphingosine acetylation, has significant inhibitory potential on healing of rabbit ear wound. As angiogenesis is fundamental to proper wound healing, we examined the effect of TAPS on angiogenesis using human umbilical vein endothelial cells cultured in vitro. TAPS markedly decreased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced chemotactic migration and capillary-like tube formation. Recognizing its inhibitory potential on angiogenesis, we further investigated the action mechanism of TAPS. TAPS significantly inhibited VEGF-induced proteolytic enzyme production, including matrix metalloproteinase-2, urokinase-type plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1. TAPS also suppressed VEGF-induced phosphorylation of p42/44 extracellular signal-regulated kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. In addition, TAPS abolished VEGF-induced intracellular calcium increase, measured using laser scanning confocal microscopy. Together, these results suggest that TAPS exerts its inhibitory action on angiogenesis through the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase activation and intracellular calcium increase, thereby affecting the process of wound healing negatively.

PPAR-gamma agonist, ciglitazone, increases pigmentation and migration of human melanocytes
Lee, Joong Sun,Choi, You Mi,Kang, Hee Young Munksgaard 2007 Experimental dermatology Vol.16 No.2

Abstract:

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) play an important role in cellular responses. It was reported that three subtypes of PPAR are expressed in human melanocytes. In this study, we investigated the effects of the PPAR-&ggr; agonist, ciglitazone, on pigmentation and migration of human melanocytes. Ciglitazone stimulated the melanin content of cells and cultured skin. This increase in pigmentation was due to the stimulation of tyrosinase activity and expression of tyrosinase and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor protein of the melanocytes. Migration was increased after ciglitazone treatment, which was observed by the Boyden chamber checkerboard analysis and a scratch motility assay. These results suggest the regulatory role of PPAR-&ggr; in pigmentation and migration of human melanocytes.

Abstract:

We conducted the proteomic studies to detect the dysregulated proteins in the atopic dermatitis (AD) proteome obtained from the patient-derived primary cultured fibroblasts. Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) was detected as being significantly down-regulated at the pH ranges of 6–9 and 4–7. The transcriptional levels of ALDH1, as detected by RT-PCR and real-time PCR, further confirmed the down-regulated phenomena for all the AD-fibroblasts (n = 20). The expression levels of ALDH1 in the whole skin tissue samples were further supported by the results of the primary cultured samples. These findings clearly demonstrate that ALDH1 can be a dermal biomarker for AD disease.

Kim, Y H,Yang, T Y,Park, C-S,Ahn, S-H,Son, B K,Kim, J H,Lim, D H,Jang, T Y Munksgaard 2012 Allergy Vol.67 No.2

Interleukin (IL)-33 is involved in the Th2 immune response and could play an essential role in nasal allergy. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of anti-IL-33 for allergic rhinitis (AR).

The novel hybrid retinoid, retinyl retinoate, is a synthetic material that was designed to reduce the side effects of retinoic acid and to increase the stability of retinol. The formulation of the retinyl retinoate, however, is required to enhance skin permeation, and thus to increase the anti-wrinkle effect.
