<P>Various species of Eimeria have different prepatent times and predilection sites, but their life cycles in infected poultry are similar. Practically speaking, chickens can be continuously exposed to various Eimeria species through environmental contamination. Furthermore, storage condition of the oocysts influences subsequent challenge infectivity, since coccidian oocysts contain a polysaccharide energy source known as amylopectin that is required for sporulation of oocysts and survival of the sporozoites. Here analysis of the oocyst-shedding patterns of 3 Eimeria species (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella) and the effects of different oocyst storage time (64, 143, 225, and 332 days) on subsequent propagation patterns were evaluated. Based on the analysis of oocyst-shedding patterns and infectious lesions evaluated by oocyst counts and histopathology, respectively, the peak points of oocyst production and infectious lesion generation in animals infected with E. acervulina were observed to occur earlier in comparison to E. maxima- and E. tenella-infected animals. Prolonged storage of E. tenella oocysts decreased oocyst excretion (measured as oocysts per gram of feces [OPG]) and lengthened the peak period. Chickens infected with the freshest oocysts (Group A) had the highest fecal oocyst output, and animals in this group reached their peak at 7 days post-infection (dpi), which is similar to the normal pattern of oocyst output in fresh isolates. Infection with oocysts stored for longer periods showed a 1-day delay in the fecal oocyst peak count (8 dpi), and these infections also resulted in fewer OPG compared to Group A. Therefore, these results indicate that the storage period is important in affecting the peak point and pattern of oocyst shedding.</P>

<P>Gymnophalloides seoi is a trematode species discovered as recently as 1993. Interestingly, ancient G. seoi eggs were identified in our earlier study on a 17th Century female mummy unearthed in a Korean county (HD-1) where G. seoi infection, according to a nationwide survey of 2001, was considered not to have been endemic. Although we suspected that the geographical distribution of G. seoi might have contracted over the past several hundred years from wider coastal areas on the Korean peninsula to the much more restricted region delineated by the survey, there has been only the single, above-noted report of an ancient G. seoi infection in a currently non-endemic area. As such, more evidence is needed before our contraction theory of G. seoi infection prevalence can be confirmed as fact. Our current report in this regard will perhaps help to end the controversy. In a newly discovered 17th Century male mummy found in another Korean county considered non-endemic by the 2001 survey, we identified a large number of ancient G. seoi eggs. We believe that this additional evidence for a wider distribution of G. seoi infection prior to the 20th Century is invaluable support for our earlier hypothesis.</P>
Centrocestus formosanus (Heterophyidae): human infections and the infection source in Lao PDR.

<P>In Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), we detected 7 patients infected with Centrocestus formosanus (1-122 adult specimens) after praziquantel treatment and purgation, together with several other trematode species including Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis taichui. The patients were all men, 23-42 yr-of-age. Three subjects were from Vientiane Municipality and 1 each were from Khammouane, Saravane, Champassak, and Xiengkhouang Province. The patients had frequently eaten raw freshwater fish and were experiencing variable degrees of epigastric pain and indigestion accompanied by occasional diarrhea, although the relationship of these symptoms with C. formosanus infection was unclear. Centrocestus formosanus specimens were ovoid, 0.46 mm (0.41-0.52 mm) long, and 0.18 mm (0.16-0.20 mm) wide (n = 10) and were equipped with 32 circumoral spines on the oral sucker. The uterine eggs were 33.2 μm long (31.8-34.9 μm) and 18.5 μm wide (17.4-19.8 μm) (n = 20). Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene of our specimens (Laotian isolate) revealed 100% homology with that of an isolate from the United States reported in GenBank. Several species of freshwater fish collected from Xiengkhouang Province revealed a 17.0% prevalence (9 of 53 fish examined) for C. formosanus metacercariae. The results suggest that human C. formosanus infections have been masked by other trematode infections.</P>
Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Feral Cats in Seoul, Korea.

<P>Abstract The present study assessed the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in feral cat populations in Seoul using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 456 feral cats from 17 wards in Seoul was surveyed. The overall prevalence of T. gondii infection was 15.8% (69/456) by ELISA and 17.5% (80/456) by PCR; by gender, 17% (44/259) by ELISA and 16.2% (42/259) by PCR in males and 14.3% (28/196) by ELISA and 19.4% (38/196) by PCR in females. On a baseline of the Han River, prevalence was 15.1% (29/192) by ELISA and 15.6% (30/192) by PCR in the upper region and 16.4% (43/264) by ELISA and 18.9% (50/264) by PCR in the lower area. This suggested that toxoplasmosis is widespread throughout Seoul's feral cat population and it is critical that the city institute policies for the control of the feral cat population to reduce the risk of toxoplasmosis transmission to animals, including humans.</P>
