The purpose of this study is to suggest some materials for the guide line of reading instruction in teaching children to read effectively and to increase their ability in reading daily life. The writer has paid the effort to find the concept which has been changed through many stages. The evolution of the concept of reading itself was interesting and significant. And the iculum of Korean Language Arts for the elermentary school which was offered be Ministry of Education has been clarified that the goals of reading instruction was not made for mere recognition of the letter and syllable elements which make up words. Reading process and the stages of development of reading ability was studied by comparing serveral work of outstanding scholars in the field. And the stages of reading interests and suitable materials for each stages are suggested. In conclusion, the writer has emphasized that the importance of thorough check up in reading readiness and personal background precedingly for the reading instruction to increase the ability of reading for the students.
