Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been used for additivities to industrial and commercial applications. With greater persistence and toxicity, the occurrence of PFASs is of great environmental and social concerns. Due to strong regulations on C8-based PFASs (PFOS and PFOA), novel PFASs, such as short-chained PFAS, precursors, and alternatives, have been introduced to industry, depending on industrial types. In the present study, 17 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), nine precursors and three novel PFASs were analyzed in multiple environmental samples collected two artificial lakes (Lakes Shihwa and Asan), which are characterized by conventional and high-tech industries, respectively. Legacy and emerging PFASs were detected in all multiple environmental matrices, indicating widespread contamination by PFASs. Occurrence of legacy and emerging PFASs were different for multiple environmental matrices, such as air, water, soil, sediment, and biota. Proximity to industry was a crucial factor for multi-matrix distribution of PFASs. Significantly different contamination profiles of PFASs were observed in both lakes due to different consumption patterns depending on industry. In particular, the predominance of shorter-chained PFASs, such as PFBA and PFBS, in multiple samples from Lake Asan could be associated with high-tech industries, such as semi-conductor, liquid crystal display, and automobiles. Partitioning of PFASs between water and sediment were influenced by sources, carbon-chain length, functional groups, and organic carbon. Significantly lower levels of Kd and Koc in Lake Asan than Lake Shihwa are likely to be on-going emission of PFASs from adjacent industries. Concentrations of water-bone PFOS in both lakes were higher than thresholds proposed by ecotoxicological studies, implying potential health risks.
