To improve the physical and chemical properties of biomass as a fuel, a pretreatment process of biomass is required. One of the various pre-treatment technologies, torrefacion, makes biomass similar to coal through low-temperature pyrolysis. In this study, the treatment was torrefied in the N2 environment at 220 and 340℃ with residence time (10 min) for Kenaf (herbaceous biomass), The torrefied products were characterized in terms of their elemental composition, mass yield, heating value, energy yield, ash content and volatile fraction. Results showed the higher temperature (340℃) was the best treatment with a relatively higher heating value of 23.19 MJ/kg, but lower energy yields of 70.76%. Also, the lower temperature (220℃) was the best treatment with a with a relatively Energy yield of 98.77%, but lower Heating value of 16.75 MJ/kg. With an increase in temperature and although the resultant solid had the highest Heating value of those studied, it nevertheless had the lowest energy yield. Temperature plays a major role during torrefaction and choosing an optimum condition is fundamental to attaining a satisfactory higher heating value, energy yield. The temperatures were fuel dependent and therefore the results indicate that careful optimization is required for all fuel types to maximise the benefits of torrefaction whilst maintaining a good energy yield and higher heating value.
