U-Pb zircon geochronology of two Permo-Triassic granites (samples OT-52 and OT-272 with ages of 229+/-8Ma and 256+/-2Ma, respectively) in the Unazuki area, Hida Metamorphic Belt, southwest Japan, revealed the presence of Eoarchean to Paleoproterozoic inheritance. Inheritance is consistent with both samples showing low zircon saturation temperatures for their bulk compositions. In OT-52, dark in CL, low Th/U zircon domains have a mean <SUP>207</SUP>Pb/<SUP>206</SUP>Pb age of 1940+/-17Ma, which is consistent with an age of 1937+/-6Ma for anatexis in the Precambrian Busan gneiss complex in Korea. Eoarchaean inherited zircons with <SUP>207</SUP>Pb/<SUP>206</SUP>Pb ages from ca. 3750 to 3550Ma are common in OT-272 but are few in OT-52, suggesting a source from rocks with affinities to those in the Anshan area in the northeast China part of the North China Craton. On the other hand, a Hida Metamorphic Belt metasedimentary gneiss into which the granites were intruded contains ca. 1840, 1130, 580, 360, 285 and 250Ma zircons (Sano et al., 2000). These ages suggest that the Unazuki Mesozoic granites did not originate from proximal Hida Metamorphic Complex rocks, but instead from unrelated rocks obscured at depth. The predominance of Eoarchean to Paleoproterozoic age components, and the marked lack of 900-700Ma components suggest that the source was the (extended?) fringe of the North China Craton, rather than from Yangtze Craton crust. The Mesozoic evolution of Japan and its linkages to northeast Asia are discussed in the context of these results.

The prompt gamma rays from the neutron capture reactions by ^(91)Zr and ^(96)Zr were measured. A neutron time-of-flight (TOF) method was adopted with a 4π Ge spectrometer installed at the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) in the J-PARC Material and Life science experimental Facility (MLF). The gamma-ray pulse-height spectra corresponding to the 292-eV resonance of ^(91)Zr and the 301-eV resonance of ^(96)Zr were obtained by gating on the TOF regions, respectively. The relative intensities of those transitions were derived. Moreover, we have demonstrated the nuclide discrimination technique by identifying ^(91)Zr resonances (isotopic composition of 5.3%) in the measurement of ^(96)Zr sample This technique can be applicable to the neutron capture measurement for a small amount of sample expected in case of long-lived fission products (LLFPs) such as ^(93)Zr.

<P>The phi-Lambda(1520) interference effect in the gamma p -> K(+)K(-)p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between phi and Lambda(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K- pairs are observed at forward angles but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the root s = 2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for phi photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange, or rescattering processes via other hyperon states.</P>

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method for the localized treatment of solid tumors. In order to enhance the efficacy of PDT, we have recently developed a novel class of photosensitizer formulation, i.e., the dendrimer phthalocyanine (DPc)-encapsulated polymeric micelle (DPc/m). The DPc/m induced efficient and unprecedentedly rapid cell death accompanied by characteristic morphological changes such as blebbing of cell membranes, when the cells were photoirradiated using a low power halogen lamp or a high power diode laser. The fluorescent microscopic observation using organelle-specific dyes demonstrated that DPc/m might accumulate in the endo-/lysosomes; however, upon photoirradiation, DPc/m might be promptly released into the cytoplasm and photodamage the mitochondria, which may account for the enhanced photocytotoxicity of DPc/m. This study also demonstrated that DPc/m showed significantly higher in vivo PDT efficacy than clinically used Photofrin<SUP>(</SUP>R) (polyhematoporphyrin esters, PHE) in mice bearing human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. Furthermore, the DPc/m-treated mice did not show skin phototoxiciy, which was apparently observed for the PHE-treated mice, under the tested conditions. These results strongly suggest the usefulness of DPc/m in clinical PDT.
A Primary Role for Nucleus Accumbens and Related Limbic Network in Vocal Tics

<P>Inappropriate vocal expressions, e.g., vocal tics in Tourette syndrome, severely impact quality of life. Neural mechanisms underlying vocal tics remain unexplored because no established animal model representing the condition exists. We report that unilateral disinhibition of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) generates vocal tics in monkeys. Whole-brain PET imaging identified prominent, bilateral limbic cortico-subcortical activation. Local field potentials (LFPs) developed abnormal spikes in the NAc and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Vocalization could occur without obvious LFP spikes, however, when phase-phase coupling of alpha oscillations were accentuated between the NAc, ACC, and the primary motor cortex. These findings contrasted with myoclonic motor tics induced by disinhibition of the dorsolateral putamen, where PET activity was confined to the ipsilateral sensorimotor system and LFP spikes always preceded motor tics. We propose that vocal tics emerge as a consequence of dysrhythmic alpha coupling between critical nodes in the limbic and motor networks.</P>

Amorphous silicon oxycarbonitride thin films were synthesized on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates at low temperatures (~80 <SUP>o</SUP>C) by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). A high ion flux and suitable nitrogen flow rate improved the gas barrier properties and deposition rate of the resulting a-SiO<SUB>x</SUB>C<SUB>y</SUB>N<SUB>z</SUB> film. The a-SiO<SUB>x</SUB>C<SUB>y</SUB>N<SUB>z</SUB> films were deposited at a high deposition rate and low water WVTR properties as a result of the high ion flux and nitrogen chemistry. The high ion flux modified the chemical structure and nitrogen atomic composition of the resulting a-SiO<SUB>x</SUB>C<SUB>y</SUB>N<SUB>z</SUB> film coatings. The substrate temperature was characterized using a thermometer. In addition, the coating properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR).
