Electrical Modeling of Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Storage Devices

This paper focuses on the electrical modeling techniques of renewable energy sources and storage devices such as batteries, fuel cells (FCs), photovoltaic (PVs) arrays, ultra-capacitors (UCs), and flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). All of these devices are being investigated recently for their typical storage and supply capabilities for various industrial applications. Hence, these devices must be modeled precisely taking into account the concerned practical issues. An obvious advantage of electrically modeling these renewable energy sources and storage devices is the fact that they can easily be simulated in real-time in any CAD simulation program. This paper reviews several types of suitable models for each of the above-mentioned devices and the most appropriate model amongst them is presented. Furthermore, a few important applications of these devices shall also be highlighted.
PYROPROCESSING FLOWSHEETS FOR RECYCLING USED NUCLEAR FUEL

Two conceptual flowsheets were developed for recycling used nuclear fuel. One flowsheet was developed for recycling used oxide nuclear fuel from light water reactors while the other was developed for recycling used metal fuel from fast spectrum reactors. Both flowsheets were developed from a set of design principles including efficient actinide recovery, nonproliferation, waste minimization and commercial viability. Process chemistry is discussed for each unit operation in the flowsheet.

An Instrumentation System Applied to Formation Flight

<P>As part of a NASA dryden autonomous formation flight program for improved drag reduction of multiple F/A-18 aircraft, a new instrument, the formation flight instrumentation system (FFIS), for the precise estimation of the relative position, velocity, and attitude between two moving aircraft without the aid of ground-based instruments, was developed. The FFIS uses a global position system (GPS) receiver and an inertial navigation sensor (INS) instrumentation package on each aircraft combined with a wireless communication system for sharing measurements between vehicles. An extended Kalman filter structure blends the outputs of each GPS/INS in a distributed manner so as to maximize the accuracy of the relative state estimates. Differential carrier phase GPS measurements are used to provide high accuracy relative range measurements to the filtering algorithm. A multiple hypothesis Wald test for estimating the integer ambiguity between the two moving vehicles was developed as part of this project. The FFIS was tested in a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HIL Sim) before being tested in actual F-18 flight tests. Test results validated the FFIS performance. Flight test results showed that the Wald test accurately estimates the integer ambiguity and that relative range estimates using least squares provide accurate position estimates with a mean of approximately 7 cm and a standard deviation of 13 cm</P>
Animacy Effects on the Mistaken Passivization of Unaccusatives in Korean Learners of English

This paper investigates factors that contribute to the high rate of mistaken passivization phenomenon of English unaccusative verbs by Korean EFL learners. By modifying the questionnaire employed by Ju (2000) to test for the pragmatic influence of a conceptualizable agent on the overpassivization rate, this study focuses on the impact of animate entities with respect to subjecthood and agentivity. Two experiments of this study manipulate animacy levels of the subjects and of the conceptual agents respectively to see whether overpassivization errors are from learners’ misunderstanding of unaccusative constructions as instances of passive. Our results show that there is an increase in the acceptance of a mistaken passivization when the subject of the unaccusative sentence is inanimate and when a conceptualizable agent in the priming sentence is animate, indicating that animacy exerts its influences on interlanguage grammar of Korean learners of English with respect to the use of passive morphology. Previously studied factors in the overpassivization literature such as L2 intralanguage interference from unaccusatives with an alternating form and L1 negative transfer from morphological differences in argument realization are also given factorial consideration.
