Hepatic Steatosis Quantification in Live Related Liver Donors: Can MRI-PDFF Replace Liver Biopsy?

Aims: Hepatic steatosis (HS) in donors has implications for the donor and recipient in live donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Liver biopsy is the gold standard for assessing HS but is invasive. The current practice: measuring liver attenuation index (LAI) in a non contrast CT, has poor accuracy in mild to moderate steatosis. MRI determined PDFF (Proton Density Fat Fraction) is a promising non invasive tool. No study comparing MRI, CT with liver biopsy in LDLT, has been performed, to our knowledge. Methods: A prospective study of consecutive healthy, voluntary liver donors undergoing NCCT, MRI and intra-operative liver biopsy. We aimed to determine whether the MRI determined PDFF using IDEAL (IDEAL: Iterative Decomposition of water and fat with Echo Asymmetry and Least-squares estimation) sequence correlated with histologic quantification of steatosis. Non contrast CT of the abdomen was done preoperatively in all the donors. Results: 30 donors were analysed during the study period. The mean age of donors was 30.4 years, mean BMI was 22.4 kg/m2. Mean LAI on CT scan was +9.35. One of the donors had a CT LAI of -5 and MRI-PDFF of 2.175 and HS of 5% on liver biopsy; postoperative course of the recipient and the donor was uneventful. The average MRI-PDFF correlated well with the pathology grading of HS with Pearson’s coefficient of 0.81. The sensitivity and specificity of MRI-PDFF in diagnosing HS>5% was 100% and 96.6%. Conclusions: MRI-PDFF using IDEAL sequence has good correlation with histology and could potentially replace liver biopsy in quantifying HS in potential LDLT donors. If CT LAI suggests rejection of the donor, MRI-PDFF is a better modality to non-invasively quantify HS and expanding the donor pool. This has changed our clinic practice to routinely evaluate HS by MRI-PDFF.
Quasi-Symmetric Wheatstone Bridge Zinc Oxide Nanorod UV Detectors

<P>Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod-based ultraviolet (UV) detectors have high responsivity at room temperature due to carrier generation assisted by the depletion region formed by oxygen adsorbed on the surface of nanorods. As such, the amount of oxygen adsorbed on the ZnO nanorod surface and the number of electron-hole pairs that reaches the depletion region on the surface can change the response of the detector. In this paper, the transient responses of metal-semiconductor-metal ZnO nanorod-based UV detectors based on a quasi-symmetric Wheatstone bridge configuration were investigated. Responsivity, defined as the ratio of the Wheatstone bridge detector output current to the total power of the UV light incident on the active area of the detector, as high as 54 A/W was obtained in some of these UV detectors at 30 °C. It was found that the responsivity and the temperature effects on the UV response of the Wheatstone bridge ZnO nanorod UV detectors can be tailored by the difference in the diameters and lengths of the rods grown in the two quadrants.</P>

Effects of ethylene inhibitors like silver nitrate $(AgNO_3)$, cobalt chloride $(CoCl_2)$ and Salicylic acid (SA) on multiple shoot induction and their impact on ethylene production using embryonal cotyledon cultures of Cucumis sativus L. were examined. The optimum concentration of $AgNO_3\;(40{\mu}M),\;CoCl_2\;(20{\mu}M)\;and\;SA\;(20{\mu}M)$, separately, induced maximum number of shoots on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented optimally with $4.44{\mu}M$ BA and $0.25{\mu}M$ NAA. Among the three ethylene inhibitors tested, $AgNO_3$ produced maximum number of shoots when compared to $CoCl_2$ and SA Ethylene production was monitored in all the treatments with $AgNO_3/CoCl_2/SA$ and it was observed that the treatment with $AgNO_3$ alone showed increase in ethylene production when compared to $CoCl_2$ and SA Even though ethylene concentration was the highest in $AgNO_3$ treated explants, maximum number of shoots was obtained.

Aims: Wether internal biliary stenting can alter the occurrence of biliary complications and overall outcome in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is not clear. There are no randomised studies to suggest if stenting helps, in the current literature. Methods: Aim Describe our technique of placing the stent Assess impact of stent on biliary complications and overall outcome Methods: 30 consecutive recipients were randomized to biliary anastomosis with and without intraductal stent. Stent: 6F infant feeding tube, cut to15 cm, extending across anastomosis into duodenum & was placed before securing the corner knot on the posterior wall. Biliary anastomosis was performed using interrupted PDS 6-0 sutures. Stent was passed into the smaller duct when two ducts were anastomosed. Sten removal: endoscopically at six weeks, earlier in case of problems. Exclusion criteria: ABO incompatible transplant, retransplantation and hepaticojejunostomy Results: Demographic features & characteristics were similar in both groups. Right lobe without MHV was the commonest graft used, 2 patients in group B had right posterior sectoral graft. 60% of patients in both groups had bile duct diameter ≤ 4mm. Hospital & ICU stay was not statistically different between the groups (P=0.89). Incidence of biliary complications: 26.6% (8/30), 10% bile leak, 16.6% stricture. There were no complications attributable to the stent or stent removal process. Conclusions: Use of internal biliary stent is safe and potentially beneficial in LDLT, quantum of which needs to be clarified by the full study.
Trade Effects of Eurasian Economic Union and Global Production Sharing: A Gravity Analysis

This study examines the effects of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) on global production sharing and trade in parts and components. With a panel dataset of disaggregated bilateral exports of EAEU members and 28 partners, we estimate an augmented gravity model for 2010–2017. To mitigate endogeneity issues, we employ the Hausman and Taylor Estimator. The study has two important findings. First, there are significant trade diversion effects on the exports of parts and components. Second, the formation of EAEU has resulted in a reduction in intra-bloc exports. In addition to these, we find that market size, inter-country differentials of income, businessfriendly climate, and cultural similarities are the other significant determinants of bilateral trade. Based on the empirical analysis, we propose that the EAEU normalise the Common External Tariff below the current level to minimise trade diversion.

The production of transgenic watermelon through Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation with in vitro regen- eration system is a time-consuming, labor-intensive and genotype-dependent process. To acquire large number of transgenic watermelons in a shorter period of time, the half-seed explants were infected with Agrobacterium strain EHA 105 harboring pCAMBIA1301 with bar and gus genes. The factors affecting in planta transformation efficiency, such as co-cultivation duration, acetosyringone concentration, sonication duration and vacuum infiltration were assessed in the present study. The half-seed explants were sonicated for 3 min and 2 min vacuum infiltrated in Agrobacterium suspension and co-cultivated for 3 days with 100 µM acetosyringone showed maximum transformation efficiency. The transformed watermelon plants were selected against BASTA® and GUS, PCR, Southern hybridization analysis confirmed the transgene integration. The amenability of this established protocol was analyzed on four genotypes, in which the response of all genotypes was posi- tive, whereas Arka manik showed the higher transformation efficiency of 17%. The transformation protocol developed in the present study is efficient, economical and expeditious without the taking part of any tissue culture phases and produce a large number of transgenic lines within a short period of 56 days.
