Transboundary Particulate Matter Pollution and the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Korea

Recent studies on the air pollution Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in South Korea imply an N-shaped curve, suggesting the worsening of air pollution in the country. This study aims to test the EKC hypothesis of South Korea by considering China’s transboundary air pollution effect. This paper estimates EKC for monthly PM10 with the generalized least squares approach using meteorological, local and economic factors, and China’s effect during 2000-2021. The finding is that PM10 pollution shows an N-shaped trajectory EKC with turning points at $7,964 and $12,897, suggesting that PM10 increases as income increases since South Korea’s GDP per capita has passed the second turning point and that China’s effect may have played a role in the process of improving and deteriorating air quality in South Korea. The result also confirms that major air pollutants (PM10, SO2, and NO2) are cointegrated using the seemingly unrelated regressions model. The findings suggest that the transboundary effects from neighboring countries should be considered when establishing policies to mitigate air pollution in South Korea.

Purpose: Although patients with late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) often experience lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), LUTS are not generally included in LOH symptoms. No study has examined the direct relation of the Aging Males Symptoms rating scale (AMS) and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) with the quality of life (QOL) index. We analyzed the relation between the IPSS and QOL index and various factors including the AMS in patients with LOH syndromes. Materials and Methods: This study comprised 1,688 men with LOH symptoms who visited our hospital or affiliated clinic. Factors associated with the IPSS were assessed in terms of age, scores of several questionnaires including the AMS, endocri-nological variables, and serum concentration of PSA. Among these same factors, those associated with the QOL index were also evaluated. Finally, the same analyses were repeated in 187 patients with low serum testosterone concentration (<3.0 ng/mL). Results: In a multivariate analysis using the significant items from the univariate analysis, AMS, age, and Erection Hard-ness Score correlated significantly with the IPSS. A trend analysis using items other than the AMS as adjustment factors also confirmed the relationship between an increase in QOL index and an increase in AMS. Similar results were obtained in the analysis of patients with low serum testosterone concentration. Conclusions: We revealed that the relation of IPSS with the QOL index for LUTS is closely associated with the AMS for LOH, regardless of testosterone level. When patients complain of LOH symptoms, a careful, detailed inquiry into LUTS is required.
Proposal of Design Method for Viscous Micropumps with a Rotating-Disk Using Theory and Simulation

The aim of the present study is to treat circular- and spiral-shaped viscous micropumps unitarily and provide guidelines for determining the appropriate micropump for performance requirements. Three-dimensional theoretical equations applicable to circular- and spiral-shaped micropumps were derived. Numerical simulations were also performed, and the results were compared with the theoretical results. The results were qualitatively consistent. By comparing the performances of the two micropumps, the spiral- and the circular-shaped micropumps are suitable in the ratio of outermost diameter to channel width c* < 0.2, and c* > 0.2, respectively. The theoretical performance for rotating disk-type micropumps was expressed in a unified manner. Furthermore, the design guideline was provided based on the theoretical method.
Japanese Corporate Governance in Transition

Japanese corporate governance is in transition. Such an institutional change can be an evolutionary and path dependence process, since it may not necessarily follow the same paths taken in other countries. Nor converge to existing models elsewhere. The paper deals with (1) a stylised model of Japanese corporate governance, (2) the current problems of existing mechanisms and some emerging new disciplines and players, and (3) some implications for the future of Japanese corporate governance. Throughout the paper, the two-tier and contingent mechanism will be stressed not only as a traditional Japanes e model but also a more general model of corporate governance.
Investigation of Droplet Collision Behavior Inside Two Merging Fuel Sprays for PCCI Combustion

Utilization of interference between two closely injected sprays is drawing concern nowadays as a possible injection strategy compromising both good atomization and sufficient penetration of the resulting merged spray. In this study, a two-needle-type injector introduced into the DWI (Direct Water Injection) system was newly proposed to be converted into a compound PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition) injector with a pilot nozzle and a main nozzle in one body. This structure enabled the separate application of injection timing and injection rate shape of both the injection nozzles in large marine engines in mind. Its two sprays begin their propagation several mm apart from each other and converge in a certain angle of 0°~50° degrees. A resulting merged spray is formed along the vector sum direction of the two sprays, but the direction of the merged spray can be temporally variable from the direction of one of the two sprays to that of the other. The visualization results of the merged spray from the compound injector revealed its unique features in the spray propagation and the mixture formation. Preliminary simulation on conventional spray models showed the spray behavior was very hard to reproduce numerically.
Hot-dipped Al-Mg-Si Coating Steel -Its Structure, Electrochemical and Mechanical Properties-

Hot-dipped Al-Mg-Si coatings to alternate Zn and Zn alloy coatings for steel were examined on metallographic structure, corrosion resistance, sacrificial ability, formation and growth of inter-metallic compounds, and mechanical properties. Near the eutectic composition of quasi-binary system of Al-Mg2Si, very fine eutectic structure of α-Al and Mg2Si was obtained and it showed excellent corrosion resistivity and sacrificial ability for a steel in sodium chloride solutions. Formation and growth of Al-Fe inter-metallic compounds at the interface of substrate steel and coated layer was suppressed by addition of Si. The inter-metallic compounds layer was usually brittle, however, the coating layer did not peel off as long as the thickness of the inter-metallic compounds layer was small enough. During sacrificial protection of a steel, amount of hydrogen into the steel was more than ten times smaller than that of Zn coated steel, suggesting to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Al-Mg-Si coating is expected to apply for several kinds of high strength steels.
