Analysis of Toyota Prius 4th generation-based multi-mode system using dog clutches

The Toyota Prius 4<SUP>th</SUP> generation has an excellent fuel economy (FE), but a mediocre acceleration performance (AP). In order to enhance its AP while maintaining its good FE, this paper investigates the addition of fixed gear modes to this benchmark system through using compact, efficient, and cost-effective dog clutches. First, a generic multi-mode system that considers all candidate clutch locations is generated. Then, the FE and AP are evaluated for all 98 candidate systems (i.e. different combinations of clutches). Few systems with a significantly enhanced AP and good FE were revealed, which confirms that adding fixed gear modes to the Prius 4th generation system does enhance its performance.
