China Dolls and Dragon Ladies : American Images of Asian Women
Susan Brownmiller 숙명여자대학교 아세아여성문제연구소 1998 Asian Women Vol.6 No.-
Americans whose childhoods coincided with World War Ⅱ grew up with the Dragon Lady, a mysterious, powerful, manipulative, glamorous figure in Terry and the Pirates, a wildly popular syndicated cartoon strip in the daily newspapers that was set somewhere in the Pacific seas. Who was the Dragon Lady, and which side was she on? For years she was the personification of evil, but when Terry started fighting the Japanese instead of the pirates, she turned out to be on our side. Her switch about, which fans of the cartoon took in stride, was a patriotic move by Milt Caniff, the artist, as a gesture of solidarity toward our embattled Chinese allies.
