<i>o</i>-NitrobenzylAlcohol Derivatives: Opportunities in Polymer and Materials Science

<P>Polymers featuring photolabile groups are the subjectof intense research because they allow the alteration of polymer propertiessimply by irradiation. In particular, the <I>o</I>-nitrobenzylgroup (<I>o</I>-NB) is utilized frequently in polymer andmaterials science. This Perspective pays particular attention to theincreasing utilization of this chemical group in polymer chemistry.It covers the use of (i) <I>o</I>-NB-based cross-linkersfor photodegradable hydrogels, (ii) <I>o</I>-NB side chainfunctionalization in (block) copolymers, (iii) <I>o</I>-NBside chain functionalization for thin film patterning, (iv) <I>o</I>-NB for self-assembled monolayers, (v) photocleavable blockcopolymers, and (vi) photocleavable bioconjugates.
