Valmet Automation has over 15 years experience in fiber analysis. The first true fiber length analyzer, KAJAANI FS-100, was introduced to the market in 1982. Later in 1987, the fully automatic KAJAANI FS-200 was launched and soon became the standard for fiber length measurement. The on-line KAJAANI FSA analyzer, based on FS-200 technology, arrived in mills during 1993. The unique KAJAANI FiberLab analyzer is now set to write the next chapter in the story of fiber characteristic analysis. The KAJAANI FiberLab combines the standardized fiber length measurement with new fiber width and cell wall thickness measurements. The unique accuracy of the KAJAANI FiberLab makes it equally suitable for research and as a standard production laboratory tool. Connected to the mill information system FiberLab can provide rapid fiber characteristics for faster process control decisions and valuable data for efficient fiber utilization.

In order to manage the wet end chemistry on paper machines, our goal is to control sub-processes through which we can influence the entire wet end operations with maximum effect. The most important sub-processes are: consistency, ash, and chemistry . <br/> The management of these three main groups is based on on-line maesurements and automatic control. This paper presents a new wet end management platform, a new analyzer. This new analyzer utilizes a modular structure and modem software. It is part of a new paper machine concept.<br/> The controls of this concept are feedback and feed forward solutions that control retention, consistencies, ash, and charge, resulting in a more stable wet end (30...80%), more uniform paper, and better runnability.

With new dilution headboxes the CD variation of paper quality has been decreased significantly. At the same time fiber orientation can be controlled independently of basis weight control, when edge flow controls are available. The dilution headbox, utilizing white water as dilution water, brings changes to the structure of the short circulation. There are new interactions between subprocesses and control loops to be turned. When white water is used for dilution it means that its consistency level and short time variation affects on the dilution control performance. The dilution process gain depends on the consistency difference between headbox and dilution water. So it is quiet obvious that consistencies and consistency controls play a key role in stabilizing the short circulation and ensuring excellent performance of the CD control. The principles, applications, and practical results of the consistency controls on various paper machines with dilution headbox are presented.
