Carbohydrate Polymers of Chirata (Swertia chirata) Leaves: Structural Features, in vitro Anti-oxidant Activity and Fluorescence Quenching Study

        Debjani Ghosh,Shruti S. Bandyopadhyay,Udipta R Chatterjee,Bimalendu Ray,Peter Capek 한국식품과학회 2012 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.21 No.2

Chirata (Swertia chirata) is widely used in Indian folk medicine for the prevention of various disorders. Herein, we analyzed the water-extracted carbohydrate polymer (WECP) of this herb using chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic methods. The anti-oxidant capacity of this fraction was studied by ferric reducing anti-oxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical assays. Effect of WECP on bovine serum albumin spectrum (BSA) was determined using excitation wavelength of 282 nm. Anion exchange chromatography of WECP yielded 5 fractions (F1-F5) with different chemical compositions. The major fraction (F5)was homogeneous, had an apparent molecular mass of 4.5kDa, and contains both carbohydrates (57%) and phenolics (34%). The anti-oxidant capacities of WECP and F5 were comparable to standard anti-oxidants. Notably, activities of the carbohydrate polymers (F1-F5) correlate with their phenolics content. Fluorescence quenching measurement suggests that F5 can form complex with BSA and the value of the binding constant is K=6.28×105/M.

Structural Characteristics, Fluorescence Quenching, and Antioxidant Activity of the Arabinogalactan Protein-rich Fraction from Senna (Cassia angustifolia) Leaves

        Sharmistha Sinha,Shruti S. Bandyopadhyay,Debjani Ghosh,Udipta Ranjan Chatterjee,Sudipta Saha,Pradyot K. Ghosal,Bimalendu Ray 한국식품과학회 2011 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.20 No.4

Senna (Cassia angustifolia) is widely used in Indian folk medicine for the prevention of various disorders. Herein, we have demonstrated that water extracted arabinogalactan protein (AGP) rich fraction possesses strong antioxidative activity. The AGP rich fraction was analyzed using chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic methods. Effect of water extracted polymers on bovine serum albumin spectrum was determined using excitation wavelength of 282 nm. The antioxidant capacity of this fraction was studied by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical assays. This polymeric fraction,≥88% of which gets precipitated with Yariv reagent, consisted mainly of (1→5)-/(1→3,5)-linked α-arabinosyl,(1→3)-/(1→3,6)-linked-galactosyl residues and terminal arabinofuranosyl residues. Its in vitro antioxidant capacity is comparable to that of standard antioxidants. Fluorescence quenching studies furnishes evidence for the interaction of the arabinogalactan protein with bovine serum albumin.

Seaweed polysaccharides-based gel to contest foot odour

        Ankit Singh,Gopal Bhojani,Shruti Chatterjee,Ramavatar Meena 한국고분자학회 2023 Macromolecular Research Vol.31 No.8

This study demonstrated a one-pot process for the preparation of seaweed-based antibacterial foot care gel for the removal of odor. Foot gel comprised 97.5% water, 1.2% seaweed polymer, 0.2% bioactive molecule, and 1.1% preservative. The antibacterial efficiency of foot gel was tested against 14 bacterial strains, isolated from foot swab samples from five different healthy volunteers having foul foot odor. The 16S rRNA partial gene sequencing identification revealed all 14 bacterial strains were different Bacillus species. Foot gel was characterized using FTIR, Rheology, TGA, and gelling properties. The volunteer's feet were treated with just two drops (around 200 L) of foot care gel before wearing socks, which showed restriction in the growth of bacterial strains causing a foul odor within a few hours, therefore resulting in restrained the foul foot odor. Furthermore, the volunteer’s remarks about feeling freshness, coolness, dryness, and smooth feet after applying the foot gel were very encouraging. The shelf life of foot gel was monitored for up to six months and during that time, no significant change in rheological characteristics and antibacterial efficiency was observed. Foot gel was compared with commercially available foot care products and foul odor removal efficiency was found identical in both. Results of this study showed that the odor-removing efficacy of developed foot gel was found better than other commercial products.
