Characteristics of Twin-Fluid Micro-Atomizer with Internal Mixing Mechanisms

The twin-fluid atomizer has three micro channels fabricated via MEMS bulk micro-machining processes, one for the liquid supply and two for introducing the atomization gas. The effects of the length scale of the micro-channels on the atomization performance are investigated. The orifice hydraulic diameter (dH) of the micro atomizer is 45μm. Malvern Insitec RT-Sizer is used to measure the particle size. Results show that the twin-fluid micro-atomizer with internal mixing mechanisms can produce fine spray with Sauter Mean Diameter of 5μm under the gas pressure of 5kg/cm2 and liquid flow rate of 0.1ml/min, a performance better than the micro atomizers reported in the literature. Flow visualization through a microscope shows that the micro-spray is unstable when the two impinging gas flows are staggered inside the atomizer. The micro-spray began to twist by these two impinging gas flows when the gas pressure goes up to 2 kg/cm2. The twisting angle and the cone angle of the spray remain constant when the gas pressure is more than 3 kg/cm2. Significant decrease in the particle size takes place when the gas pressure is more than 4kg/cm2. The atomization efficiency of the twin-fluid micro-atomizer with internal mixing mechanism is several times higher than other type of twin-fluid atomizers.

Aim: To investigate whether XRCC1 and ADPRT polymorphisms might be associated with outcomes of breast cancer. Methods: A prospective study was conducted with a total of 335 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy consecutively collected from Jan. 2005 to Jan. 2008. Genotyping of XRCC1 and ADPRT polymorphisms was conducted by PCR-RFLP assay. Results: All 335 patients were followed up until death or the end of Jan. 2012, with a median follow-up period of 38.8 (2-64) months. It was shown that the variant genotype of XRCC1 399Gln/Gln was strongly significantly associated with a decreased risk of death from breast cancer, with an HR (95% CI) of 0.52 (0.28-0.91). Similarly, individuals carrying the ADPRT 762Ala/Ala demonstrated longer survival compared to ADPRT 762 Val/Val, with an HR (95% CI) of 0.58 (0.31-0.97). Individuals with combination genotypes of XRCC1 399Gln allele and ADPRT 762Ala/Ala presented with a longer survival, the HR (95% CI) being 0.56 (0.32-0.97). Conclusion: We found a significant association between XRCC1399Gln/Gln and ADPRT 762Ala/Ala polymorphisms and clinical outcomes. These two genotypes could be used as a surrogate markers of clinical outcome in glioma cases receiving chemotherapy.

Objective: Hapatitis B visus (CHB)-induced fibrosis is a precancerous condition of liver. To explore the influence of Chongcao Preparation (Chongcao Yigan Capsule) on the function of intestinal flora and chemoprevention for patients with CHB-induced liver fibrosis. Methods: A total of 136 patients with CHB-induced liver fibrosis were randomly divided into control group treated with lamivudine (LAM) and research group added with Chongcao Yigan Capsule for totally 48 weeks. The changes of intestinal flora, secretory immunoglobin A (SIgA), serum albumin (ALB), prealbumin (PALB), IgA and IgG at different time points in both groups were observed. Results: Before treatment, there was no significant difference between two groups in each index (P>0.05). After treatment, the intestinal flora were evidently optimized in research group than treatment before (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and were apparently better than those in control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01); SIgA was obviously increased and ALB, PALB, IgA and IgG were markedly improved in research group than treatment before (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and were significantly better than those in control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusions: Chongcao Yigan Capsule could regulate the intestinal flora, increase SIgA, serum ALB and PALB concentrations and significantly improve serum IgA and IgG as well as strengthen the immunological function and autologous repair capacity of patients with CHB-induced liver fibrosis.
