Magnetically nano-$CoFe_2O_4$ efficiently catalyzes oxidation of primary and secondary benzylic and aliphatic alcohols to give the corresponding carbonyl products in good yields. The reactions were carried out in an aqueous medium at room temperature in the presence of oxone (potassium hydrogen monopersulfate) as an oxidant. In addition, the catalysts could be reused up to 6 runs without significant loss of activities. Catalyst was characterized by SEM, XRD and IR.

Multi objective optimization of reverse osmosis desalination plant with exergy approach

A brackish water reverse osmosis desalination plant based on exergy analysis was simulated and its performance was investigated. The computational model base on diffusion and convection transport mechanisms and concentration polarization concept was developed to predict the performance of RO membrane using different feed water concentration, feed flow rate, feed water pressure, membrane specification and feed water properties. The mathematical model has had good accuracy with reference data. The influence of operating parameters such as feed water pressure and temperature on the performance of the system was studied. Exergetic efficiency and destruction of streams exergy were calculated. Finally, multi-objective optimization for highest exergetic efficiency and permeate flow rate was done.
Efficiency analysis of straight fin with variable heat transfer coefficient and thermal conductivity

In this study, one type of applicable analytical method, differential transformation method (DTM), is used to evaluate the efficiency and behavior of a straight fin with variable thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient. Fins are widely used to enhance heat transfer between primary surface and the environment in many industrial applications. The performance of such a surface is significantly affected by variable thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient, particularly for large temperature differences. General heat transfer equation related to the fin is derived and dimensionalized. The concept of differential transformation is briefly introduced, and then this method is employed to derive solutions of nonlinear equations. Results are evaluated for several cases such as: laminar film boiling or condensation, forced convection, laminar natural convection, turbulent natural convection, nucleate boiling, and radiation. The obtained results from DTM are compared with the numerical solution to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. The effects of design parameters on temperature and efficiency are evaluated by some figures. The major aim of the present study, which is exclusive for this article, is to find the effect of the modes of heat transfer on fin efficiency. It has been shown that for radiation heat transfer, thermal efficiency reaches its maximum value.

<P>Water was used as an efficient green solvent for the synthesis of sterically congested 1,3,4-oxadiazoles derivatives via a one-pot, three-component reaction of various aromatic carboxylic acids, acenaphthoquinone, and N-isocyanimino-triphenylphosphorane (Ph3PNNC) at a reaction temperature of 20-26 degrees C for 15h. The remarkable features of this green methodology include high yield of products, water as the solvent, short reaction time, operational simplicity, environmentally benign, and the absence of any volatile or hazardous organic solvents.</P>
Herbal Extract Loaded Chitosan/PEO Nanocomposites as Antibacterial Coatings of Orthopaedic Implants

One of the most substantial complications in orthopedic surgeries is implant associated infection. While theimplant interface can be a permissive surface for bacterial colonization, an appropriate coating on the implant can effectivelyhinder biofilm formation. To this aim, henna and thyme extract loaded into a chitosan (CS)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) basednanofibrous hydrogel. CS/PEO/henna and CS/PEO/thymus extract nanofibers were fabricated via two-nozzle electrospinning. The proper weight ratio of CS/PEO/herbal extract was optimized. The appropriate ratio of CS/PEO and the most suitableextract concentrations was obtained to be 7/3 (v/v) and 1 % (v/v), respectively. Contact angle measurements showed anappropriate degree of hydrophilicity in all groups including herbal loaded electrospun nanosheets. Tensile strengthmeasurements showed that inclusion of henna and thymus made minor changes in tensile strength and strain of herbal loadednanofiber, compared to control CS/PEO fibers. Then antibacterial tests were performed and the fibers either by themselves orwhen used as coating on orthopedic screws exhibited a good inhibition zone against both gram negative and gram positivebacteria. The coatings showed no adverse effect on the red blood cells in leading to hemolysis. Cytocompatibility assayindicated that the prepared nanofibrous hydrogel coating was absolutely biocompatible as tested with fibroblast cells. Theresults of this study indicated that our henna and thyme extracts loaded CS/PEO coatings can be used in various medicalfields such as wound dressing and implantation coating to prevent bacterial adhesion, growth and generally, infection.

Purpose: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the reverse contrast mode in intraoral digital radiography for the detection of proximal dentinal caries, in comparison with the original digital radiographs. Materials and Methods: Eighty extracted premolars with no clinically apparent caries were selected, and digital radiographs of them were taken separately in standard conditions. Four observers examined the original radiographs and the same radiographs in the reverse contrast mode with the goal of identifying proximal dentinal caries. Microscopic sections $5{\mu}m$ in thickness were prepared from the teeth in the mesiodistal direction. Four slides prepared from each sample used as the diagnostic gold standard. The data were analyzed using SPSS (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Our results showed that the original radiographs in order to identify proximal dentinal caries had the following values for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy, respectively: 72.5%, 90%, 87.2%, 76.5%, and 80.9%. For the reverse contrast mode, however, the corresponding values were 63.1%, 89.4%, 87.1%, 73.5%, and 78.8%, respectively. The sensitivity of original digital radiograph for detecting proximal dentinal caries was significantly higher than that of reverse contrast mode (p<0.05). However, no statistically significant differences were found regarding specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, or accuracy (p>0.05). Conclusion: The sensitivity of the original digital radiograph for detecting proximal dentinal caries was significantly higher than that of the reversed contrast images. However, no statistically significant differences were found between these techniques regarding specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, or accuracy.
Assessing EU perception in Kazakhstan's mass media

This paper explores the mass media perception of the European Union (EU) in Kazakhstan by utilizing the content analysis of the major mass media outlets. The authors examine news reports and periodical articles from four major national Kazakh newspapers using three measurement points. The first measurement point covers the early 1990s when Kazakhstan declared independence and began to establish its foreign relations. The second measurement point covers the periods before and after introduction of the EU Strategy for Central Asia (2006–2008). The third measurement point covers the years (2011–2013) associated with implementation with the EU Strategy and assessing its results. Our main findings suggest that Kazakhstan's mass media positively perceives the role of the EU in the region. Moreover, they tend to portray the EU mainly as an economic powerhouse. Our findings support some suggestions by similar studies of the EU's external perception.
