Peroxiredoxins are cysteine-dependent peroxide reductases that group into 6 different, structurally discernable classes. In 2011, our research team reported the application of a bioinformatic approach called active site profiling to extract active site-proximal sequence segments from the 29 distinct, structurally-characterized peroxiredoxins available at the time. These extracted sequences were then used to create unique profiles for the six groups which were subsequently used to search GenBank(nr), allowing identification of ~3500 peroxiredoxin sequences and their respective subgroups. Summarized in this minireview are the features and phylogenetic distributions of each of these peroxiredoxin subgroups; an example is also provided illustrating the use of the web accessible, searchable database known as PREX to identify subfamily-specific peroxiredoxin sequences for the organism Vitis vinifera (grape).

Design: rationale is a promising way of capturing design decisions and considerations for later retrieval and traceability to improve collaborative design decision-making. To achieve these perceived benefits for early-stage complex ship design, this paper first elaborates on the development of a proof-of-concept design rationale method. The method aims to aid ship designers in the continuous capturing and reuse of design rationale during the collaborative concept design process. Second, the setup and results of an experiment conducted with marine design students and with experts are discussed. This experiment shows how the developed design rationale method benefits collaborative design decision-making such that it leads to improved insight into design issues across the design team during a single design session.

The essays and fiction of prominent writer and editor, Yi T’aejun, perform a Romantic reworking of the Confucian figure of the solitary scholar- gentleman into that of the lonely artist, supposedly isolated from the realms of politics and commercial business and developing his sensibility in the privacy of his own home. As in all forms of Romanticism, however, this textual subjectivity figures rather a relationship or accomodation to a transforming society. My interest here lies in elaborating some of the terms of that accommodation, which I call Yi’s private Orient: in a colonized society undergoing assimilation into a wartime Japanese empire, what might it mean to construct a notion of selfhood in a cultural notion of a Pan-Asian past? Through an examination of the chronotope of the Orient produced in Yi’s essay collection Mus?rok and his short story S?gyang, this paper considers the question of subjectivity in the late colonial period.
Functional roles of peripheral and central olfactory pathways in sex pheromone communication

Behavioral responses to the sex pheromone blends rely on genetically designed hardwired olfactory pathways, including precise detection of the specific pheromone compounds and sophisticated signal processes in the brain to interpret correct pheromone mixture information. Owing to minimized association of individual variation and acquired traits from learning in sex pheromone communication, behavioral assays can be very useful tool for understanding each step in the olfactory system. To investigate interactions between peripheral and central pathways in shaping olfactory perception, we used antennal imaginal disc transplants between phylogenetically close two heliothine moth species Heliothis virescens and Heliothis subflexa. In behavioral tests, the response patterns of the male transplants were distinct from any of normal males of either species. Neurophysiological analyses of olfactory receptor neurons in the antenna and projection neurons in the brain also supported the behavioral dissimilarities between the transplants and normal animals. Results will be discussed in light of the functional roles and developmental significances of peripheral and central olfactory pathways in pheromone communication system.
