Purpose: Anismus is a functional disorder featuring obstructive symptoms and paradoxical contractions of the pelvic floor. This study aims to establish diagnosis agreement between physiology and radiology, associate anismus with morphological outlet obstruction, and explore the role of sphincteric pressure and rectal volumes in the radiological diagnosis of anismus. Methods: Consecutive patients were evaluated by using magnetic resonance imaging proctography/fluoroscopic defecography and anorectal physiology. Morphological radiological features were associated with physiology tests. A categorical analysis was performed using the chi-square test, and agreement was assessed via the kappa coefficient. A Mann-Whitney test was used to assess rectal volumes and sphincterial pressure distributions between groups of patients. A P-value of <0.05 was significant. Results: Forty-three patients (42 female patients) underwent anorectal physiology and radiology imaging. The median age was 54 years (interquartile range, 41.5–60 years). Anismus was seen radiologically and physiologically in 18 (41.8%) and 12 patients (27.9%), respectively. The agreement between modalities was 0.298 (P = 0.04). Using physiology as a reference, radiology had positive and negative predictive values of 44% and 84%, respectively. Rectoceles, cystoceles, enteroceles and pathological pelvic floor descent were not physiologically predictive of animus (P > 0.05). The sphincterial straining pressure was 71 mmHg in the anismus group versus 12 mmHg. Radiology was likely to identify anismus when the straining pressure exceeded 50% of the resting pressure (P = 0.08). Conclusion: Radiological techniques detect pelvic morphological abnormalities, but lead to overdiagnoses of anismus. No proctographic pathological feature predicts anismus reliably. A stronger pelvic floor paradoxical contraction is associated with a greater likelihood of detection by proctography.

<P>This paper presents a microfluidic pump operated by an asymmetrically deformed membrane, which was inspired by caterpillar locomotion. Almost all mechanical micropumps consist of two major components of fluid halting and fluid pushing parts, whereas the proposed caterpillar locomotion-inspired micropump has only a single, bilaterally symmetric membrane-like teardrop shape. A teardrop-shaped elastomeric membrane was asymmetrically deformed and then consecutively touched down to the bottom of the chamber in response to pneumatic pressure, thus achieving fluid pushing. Consecutive touchdown motions of the teardrop-shaped membrane mimicked the propagation of a caterpillar's hump during its locomotory gait. The initial touchdown motion of the teardrop-shaped membrane at the centroid worked as a valve that blocked the inlet channel, and then, the consecutive touchdown motions pushed fluid in the chamber toward the tail of the chamber connected to the outlet channel. The propagation of the touchdown motion of the teardrop-shaped membrane was investigated using computational analysis as well as experimental studies. This caterpillar locomotion-inspired micropump composed of only a single membrane can provide new opportunities for simple integration of microfluidic systems.</P>

1968년 5월 혁명을 거치면서, 장-뤽 고다르는 상업영화 체제 내에서 행하던 기존의 영화적 관습과 가치를 거부하면서, 일종의 탐험가나 모험가처럼 혁신적인 영화적 실험을 시도한다. 그는 사회정치적 관점에서 영화의 본질이 무엇인지 자문하면서, 의사소통이나 재현의 방식을 바꾸고자 한다. 특히 스크린의 이미지와 관객 간의 비평적 관계에 새로운 형태를 부여하고자 한다. 또한 그는 철학적 사유의 도구처럼 영화를 다루기 시작하며, 영화적 사유의 주체인 관객의 능동적 역할을 요구한다. 따라서 본 논문은 브레히트의 이론을 영화적으로 완성시킨 〈만사형통〉을 통해 자본주의 체제 내에서의 영화제작의 문제와 브레히트적인 요소들을 분석하고자 한다. 특히 그는 브레히트의 ‘거리두기 효과’에 기반을 둔 영화적 장치를 활용하면서 관객의 능동성을 일깨운다. 그가 영화속에서 활용한 ‘블록구조화’, ‘영화 속의 영화’, ‘수평 트래킹의 사용’을 살펴보면서, 본 연구자들은 관객과의 새로운 의사소통의 구조와 색다른 시선을 검토하고자 한다. 결국 고다르 영화는 관객과 영화 간에 존재하는 관계를 재고찰하는 것이며, 정치영화를 제작하는 문제이다. 그는 정치적 실험의 대상으로 혹은 정치적 투쟁의 무기로써 영화를 활용하며, 노동계급에게 무기를 제공하는게 아니라 그것을 주조하고 활용하는 방식에 도움을 주고자 한다. 이처럼 상업적 시스템에서 벗어나 TV영화를 제작하던 고다르는 1972년에 〈만사형통〉으로 다시 상업영화 틀로 돌아오지만 자신만의 방식으로 정치영화를 선보이며, 관객의 ‘능동적 사유’를 촉구한다. 물론 영화 기술적 측면에서는 다소 미흡하지만 열린 결말을 선보이며 관객과의 소통에 역점을 두고 관객에게 ‘사유할 준비’를 시킨다.

A novel method for the selective and localized synthesis and integration of nanostructures to the functional microdevices has been developed. This method is based on the localized hydrothermal reaction control by microscale heaters. By applying an electrical bias across micro/nanoscale wires, a localized temperature field is generated via Joule heating of the wires. Then, the hydrothermal reaction of the metal oxide precursor solution induces localized synthesis and in-situ integration of nanostructures near the heated micro/nano wires. We have applied this method to the zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and demonstrated a UV -sensitive photodetector device based on the integrated ZnO nanowires.

Purpose: The role of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection in chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) is well known. What is unclear is whether there are any differences in the course or clinical outcome of the disease when the cause is CT or other uropathogens. Materials and Methods: A series of 311 patients affected by CBP due to CT (cohort A) was compared with a group of 524 patients affected by CBP caused by common uropathogen bacteria (cohort B). All participants completed the following questionnaires: National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index, International Prostate Symptom Score, International Index of Erectile Function-15 erectile function domain (IIEF-15-EFD), Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT), and the Short Form 36 (SF-36) Health Survey. All patients were followed with clinical and microbiological evaluations. Results: After a mean follow-up time of 42.3 months, the number of symptomatic episodes was significantly higher in patients in cohort A than in cohort B (4.1±1.1 vs. 2.8±0.8, p<0.001), and the mean time to first symptomatic recurrence was shorter in cohort A than in cohort B (3.3±2.3 months vs. 5.7±1.9 months, p<0.001). Moreover, scores on the SF-36 tool were significantly lower in cohort A (96.5±1.0 vs. 99.7±1.9, p<0.001) at the first symptomatic recurrence. Cohort A also showed significantly lower scores on the IIEF-15-EFD and PEDT questionnaires at the end of the follow-up period (26.8±2.9 vs. 27.3±3.3, p=0.02 and 11.5±2.3 vs. 4.5±2.8, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Patients affected by CBP due to CT infection have a higher number of symptomatic recurrences with a more severe impact on quality of life.
Top-down fabricated silicon nanowire sensors for real-time chemical detection

<P>Silicon nanowire (SiNW) sensors have been developed by using top-down fabrication that is CMOS (complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor) compatible for resistive chemical detection with fast response and high sensitivity. Top-down fabrication by electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching of a silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate enables compatibility with the CMOS fabrication process, accurate alignment with other electrical components, flexible design of the nanowire geometry and good control of the electrical characteristics. The SiNW sensors showed a large operation range for pH detection (pH = 4–10) with an average sensitivity of (Δ<I>R</I>/<I>R</I>)/pH = 2.6%/pH and a rise time of 8 s. A small pH level difference (ΔpH = 0.2) near neutral pH conditions (pH = 7) could be resolved with the SiNW sensors. The sensor response to the presence of alkali metal ions and the long term drifting effects were also investigated. </P>

Various Lactobacillus reuteri strains were screened for the ability to convert glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) in a glycerol-glucose co-fermentation. Only L. reuteri DSM 20016, a well-known probiotic, was able to efficiently carry out this bioconversion. Several process strategies were employed to improve this process. Co<sup>2+</sup> addition to the fermentation medium, led to a high product titer (46 g/l) of 1,3-PDO and to improved biomass synthesis. L. reuteri DSM 20016 produced also ca. 3 µg/g of cell dry weight of vitamin B<sub>12</sub>, conferring an economic value to the biomass produced in the process. Incidentally, we found that L. reuteri displays the highest resistance to Co<sup>2+</sup> ions ever reported for a microorganism. Two waste materials (crude glycerol from biodiesel industry and spruce hydrolysate from paper industry) alone or in combination were used as feedstocks for the production of 1,3-PDO by L. reuteri DSM 20016. Crude glycerol was efficiently converted into 1,3-PDO although with a lower titer than pure glycerol (33.3 vs. 40.7 g/l). Compared with the fermentation carried out with pure substrates, the 1,3-PDO produced was significantly lower (40.7 vs. 24.2 g/l) using cellulosic hydrolysate and crude glycerol, but strong increases of the maximal biomass produced (2.9 vs 4.3 g/l CDW) and of the glucose consumption rate were found. The results of this study lay the foundation for further investigations to exploit the biotechnological potential of L. reuteri DSM 20016 to produce 1,3-PDO and vitamin B<sub>12</sub> using industry byproducts.
